if you were heartbroken when the fantastic dismemberment plan broke up, and thought travis morrison’s solo record was, eh lets say pretty shitty, fret not young (wo)man. if you say dismemberment plan, who? do yourself a favor and check em out. bringing it back on track, st louis, misery’s so many dynamos are here to fill that void. i am not saying that they are the dismemberment plan reincarnated, i am just saying. although the first track “search party” reminds me quite a bit of the spastic ways of the now defunct and captains dead favorite cap ‘n jazz. the follow up, flashlight, to their debut, when i explode, is set to “drop” on 9.12. i am sure a tour is to follow, since last year they played in all the contiguous 48 states, aptly dubbed 48 in ‘05 .

to the races with eric bachmann

there are a few artists that in my opinion can do no wrong, and mr eric bachmann is one such artist. every piece of music starting with his ground breaking work with archers of loaf to crooked fingers to a yet to be released record under his god given name, his music always been always been a step above just about everyone. if the two tracks of what sounds to be a very sparse and reflective affair are any indication to what the entire record is like, i may have to rethink and retool my favorites of the year.

black fiction i salute you

like most bloggers, i get random emails from publicists/pr people/managers/artists, some good, some pretty damn shitty, in all honesty.? i try and give everyone their fair shake, even the emails with what seems to be broken english coming from someone named “tony.” today or yesterday, i recieved one from team clermont - never heard of them and still dont understand what they do.? anyway, in said email was a photo of six dudes standing around not doin much, but laughin and starin blankly, but what drew me in were two of the dudes beards.? i’ll be honest, beards, typically = good stuff.? dont know what it is about dudes and beards but they usually have some kind of midas touch.? even if their isnt a dude with a beard in the band, but maybe a member happens to have a friend with a beard, thats usually just as good.

so, this band black fiction, who i think is outta San Fran, that team clermont is repping is really fuckin good, people.? they remind me of a funky califone fronted by a guy that sounds like a cross between lambchop’s kurt wagner, doing his best curtis mayfield, the old man molester from family guy, and stephen malkmus.? the first track i happened to listen to was “i spread the disease” and damn its funky but in a very organic, up from the ashes kinda way.? i am going to go out on a limb and and say that “i spread the disease” is one of the best songs i have heard this year.

my dear, nina gordon

6 Comments Written by gregor on July 13th, 2006 in tunes.

i have a real soft spot in my heart for nina gordon.? sure, i have not listened to her music in sometime but it really doesnt matter.??this soft spot is all the result of seeing veruca salt open for liz phair sometime before american thighs came out.? damn did they fuckin?bring the rock.??even as salty as some chicago crowds can be towards?openers,?by the second song everyone was diggin em.? plus she looked hot as hell, but it wouldnt mean much if she didnt have such a lovely voice.???

so, nina?has a new record coming out on 8.8.06 called Bleeding Heart Graffiti.? here is the first single of said record.

kiss me till it bleeds????

here’s a few covers thrown in for good measure

nobody’s fool?- cinderella

18 and life?- skid row

one more night?- phil collins

straight outta compton - nwa - i am sure most of you have heard this but for those who havent, enjoy.

play with toys is imo one of the most sadly overlooked records of the past 15 or so years. it’s really a hard record to peg into a genre hole, which makes it that much cooler. listening to play with toys is a lot like locking yourself in your bedroom on a hot summer day, getting stoned and frantically changing cds midway through the songs. its not rap, its not folk, but it has elements of each and is one chilled out trip. i dont think you can tell that this was recorded almost 15 years ago, which is always a sign of classic recording.
