los lobos got a new one and suicide handbook part two

i think life can be summed up in the blank and plastic emotions painted on lego people. today i am a bit bummed, or disappointed as it were. i received an email from a good friend the other day on a lead for what was pretty much my dream job - being a publicist for a well established “indie” label. in case you were not aware, i was in public relations for 9 years before my current gig. i love pr but its tough, mentally and spiritually, pushing shit that you cant get behind at least 80 percent. so, thats why i have stayed away from that field for a while. so, when this opportunity arose i was pretty psyched, not only because of the company but because it would bring me back home. my excitement ended at roughly 4.30 est time today. apparently, they hired someone a few weeks ago. i guess i should check the cmj job section more often. it wasn’t meant to be, i guess.in other news, one of my favorite groups, los lobos, has just released a new record entitled the town and the city. if you have never listened to los lobos i cant recommend them more highly. when i say every record in their catalogue is stellar i am not over exaggerating at all. they are streaming the new record here, and then if you are feeling really adventurous go out and pick up kiko and/or colossal head.

the suicide handbook part one

the years of 1994 through 2002 are a complete blur. they may have well not existed at all. during those years i lived in some newcastle induced time negelected vacuum. which i guess was cool at the time but now looking back the details are sketchy at best. some time during that time i stumbled upon a bloodshot records block party, i think it was bloodshot, featuring whiskeytown. i dont think i was invited but i was there nonetheless. i dont remember much of the whiskeyton set, to be honest. i do remember walking away being smitten with mr adams and crew. after a few weeks i went and bought a copy of rural free delivery and faithless street. fastforward a few years and a whiskeytown breakup, i found myself in possession of ryan’s debut record heartbreaker. a record, that at the time i thought was the greatest thing i had ever heard, but now i feel falls flat. i still love the record, but time has not been very kind to it to my ears. hearbreaker pretty much sums up my feelings for ryan and his work. some of it is killer and some of it is filler. after listening to this npr interview i kind of understand and appreciate where he is coming from.

i am sure these demos have been passed around enough that they since become a bore but thats not my concern. here is part one of the suicide handbook.

Faithless Street Strangers Almanac Heartbreaker

for those in atlanta, richard buckner, eric bachmann and the wunderkid know as beirut are playing at the variety tomorrow evening.

the information is all wrong and brent gorton’s sweet breasts

brent.jpg

sup, bitches!?? firstly, that new beck “the information” is not so hot.? beck is a lot like the flaming lips, in my opinion.? they got so much style that its wasted.? he is one talented dude, but god damn if the shit isn’t starting to get long in the tooth.? i dont even hold his belief in scientology against him, but come on bro give me something i can work with.? sea change is a brilliant record me thinks, and he should definitely travel down that road from here on out.

enough about beck lets talk about brent gorton and his tender breasts.? so, this young man has just released his self titiled debut long player.? he’s a weird cat to describe.? he reminds me of a much poppier sparklehorse, or a less fuzzed/drugged out grandaddy.? anyway his record is pretty damn good and is definitely worth your while checking out.

whiter than sour cream and the kamikaze hearts, revisited

man, you cant sleep on weird al. his flow in “white and nerdy” is pretty damn impressive. who would have thought that he would still be around, and still relevant to boot sure as hell not me. i have always dug his stuff, cause the guy is talented as hell?to be honest.? i guess it makes sense cause he really fills a niche that is by no means well traveled.? theres a fine line between fuckin stupid and fuckin funny. luckily for al, he’s is?smart enough to?tow the latter’s line. idolator has his parody of r kelly’s mini epic “trapped in the closet” entitled “trapped at the drive thru.” its pretty damn funny.

i want to mention how much i have been digging the kamikaze hearts oneida road over the past few weeks. sure they have been getting a lot of buzz lately, but here’s the difference between the kamikaze hearts and everyone else. they put?out a record thats worth every piece of buzz press it gets. they are a band that you can, and hopefully will, get behind for the long haul.? they aren’t a flash in the pan, here today gone tomorrow type of outfit.? at least i hope not, for all of our?sakes.??its a wonderful record, bar none and is easily going to be one of my favorites of the year.? i can definitely envision myself listening to oneida road for years to come. oneida road is?out this tuesday, or you can order it from here. the song “deerhunter” is alone worth the price of admission.

top of your head

no one called you a failure

if you only buy three records this year, this should be one of them.? i am not fucking around.? seriously, i am not.

bag o’ crap

buddy.JPG

last night i had a dream about the early 80’s playskool companion, my buddy.? you know the doll that some parents groups demanded be pulled from the?shelves because they feared that it would turn their sons?into flaming homosexuals.? yep, thats?the one.? i dont know what the dream was about or?why my buddy felt the need to make an appearance.? i am sure some dime store dr freud could have a field day this one.? i would be worried if me and lil buddy were holding hands or telling each other our deepest?secrets in hushed tones or over glasses of red wine, but luckily for me he just walked past never to be seen again.? i never?personally owned a my buddy doll, but me thinks my younger, non gay brother did.? i know he did have a blow up et punching bag, which oddly enough made him very sick.? pussy.

the greatest site on the web, engadget, is currently running contests, to correspond with their recent relaunch,?to win a?slingbox or the much hyped, often hated?zune.?

my man jennings over at rbally has a cat power from germany recorded in 98.?

the drummer for?rogue wave, pat spurgeon, is in dire need of a kidney.? so, on sept 30 in san fran there is going to be a benefit concert to help?get that damn kidney.??if you cant make it but would like to donate you can do so by visiting the rogue wave website.???

if anyone is interested here is an awesome e-card to promote brooke hogan’s debut record.? below is the single “about us”?in the oh so convenient m3u format.??

beware of ants! idolator and goodbye cheater

the other day i accidentally stepped in a small fire ant hill?and of course?i didnt notice until my right foot was ablaze.? three days later my right ankle is still itching like a bitch.? up until about three years ago, i didnt know that ants had the capacity for biting.? it was not until my wife was complaining of ant bites while sitting barefooted on our patio, that i found out this little nugget of information.??where the hell do they get off biting?? i am pretty positive the ants in the midwest do not bite.? having lived my whole life in chicago, i dont recall ever getting bit.? fuckin little bastards.

in other?news, have you all checked out idolator?? its a music site of sorts brought to you by the people behind gawker.? gawker i personally dont care about but i am finding idolator quite amusing.? i like it cause it has quite a bit of personality, and its not overly anything except snarky.? there are plenty of differing?opinions about idolator floating around the internets.? websites are a lot like tv, if you dont like?a particular site/show dont fucking?patronize it.??its not like these sites are changing the world, performing life saving surgery or severly impactings one’s ability?to make monetary gains.? its all quite silly, if you axe me.
