califone, goodbye cheater disc one

so, i didnt end up hitting the band of horses show last evening, but my wife and her bros were in attendance.? they of course,?thought they were fantastic and my one bro-in-law got chummy with one of the security guards and got to go back stage.? damn him!??going back stage is always a bit awkward,?or at least my experiences have been as such.??they were cool, but really whats the point?? you got a hundred or so other dorks all clamoring for the artists attention, for what 30 seconds of forgettable face time?? it makes for a decent enough story, but really thats about it.??
i got a lot of stuff i have?been neglecting, mainly emails from some pretty promising bands so i will get to them over the next couple o’ days.??
today, comes a collection of?live califone?material entitled goodbye cheater.? its a two disc set, and today is part one.? califone’s new record roots and crowns is being released on 10.10.? pastry sharp has the video for the first single off of roots and crowns,?spiders house.

i have spent the better portion of the year listening to everything all the time, the debut by just about every bloggers darlings, band of horses. its a record that while on first listen it bears many redeeming qualities, its not until like the 20th listen that you really begin to digest it. not to say its a complicated record, far from it, but their a subtle nuances sprinkled throughout that dont rear their heads until after repeated listens. it reminds me a lot of centro-matic’s fort recovery, not in terms of style but of substance. i would have to say that band of horses has the potential to be one of america’s greatest exports.
they are playing at the variety, in atlanta, on sunday.
this show was recorded on 7.28 in seattle at the capitol hill block party.

my zune opinion and buffalo tom in chicago

i have been reading quite a bit, both good and down right nasty, about the zune today. for those that have not been paying attention it is microsofts first foray into the portable music player segment. sure they’re about 5 years too late, but really who cares? i am a techno geek but a lot of these people put me to shame in their absolute dorkiness. i mean are any of these people makin or losing money off of this thing? probably not. if the thing does its job, and that is play music then who the fuck cares what color it comes in or what it does or doesnt have? i have both a mac and a pc, and quite frankly i have no loyalty to either. both do their respective jobs, and do them quite well. who cares if scott stereogum got a free ride to washington to check out the zune first hand? shit, if i were offered that i would not think twice about it. is anyone’s life worse off because some fuckin blogger was offered something pretty fuckin cool? anyway, if microsoft wants to throw a zune my way, i will pimp the hell outta that thing. to be honest it looks pretty damn cool. sorry about the rant, but i am quite buzzed at the moment. it may be a bit nonsensical, but you may or may not get my point. by the way, me thinks that engadget is the greatest sit on the interweb. i seriously check it every ten minutes.
buffalo tom is a band that definitely doesn’t get their fair shake in terms of fainfare. maybe they get a bit more love in the northeast, but since i have never lived there i really would not know for certain. bill janovitz and crew write and perform some of the best no frills rock n roll that one could ever hope to hear. two buffalo tom records take up some space in my top 25 off all time, let me come over and big red letter day. here is a performance recorded live in my hometown, chicago back in 1993.

well, well, well, i?am glad?to see that pavement’s most underrated and most often understood record, wowee zowee, is getting the reissue treatment.? i could not find any info on it on the matador site but pfork has the track listing and such.??up until today i cant tell you the last time i visited pfork.? i used to read it?every day but ever since the re-design i find the amount of ads and such quite obnoxious.?
you can stream three of the westerberg/stinson tracks that will be on the soundtrack?to Open Season over at lost highway.??i cant vouch for the quality for i have not listened to them yet, but come on even if they arent so hot its still paul and tommy.
personally i dont care if modest mouse signed to capital or had a minor hit with?”float on” or their shows are now overcrowded, i got other shit to get pissed about like those god damn salespeople that dont understand what “no soliciting” means.? if i were still 20 i might have played the sellout card, but quite frankly that is the lamest and laziest card one could play.? the whole modest mouse catalogue is fantastic in my opinion and even if they end up on rock star modest mouse in 5 years i would still love em.??these here tracks were taken from an acoustic performance recorded on 9.26.01 here in atlanta.
