lucero has set up an official youtube site which as of now has some cool clips live from cbgb’s. lucero play here in atlanta next saturday night at the variety, but as an added kick ass bonus they will be doing an instore at criminal @ 6 pm - which me and the family should be attending. be on the lookout for a ben nichols interview gracing these page in the coming weeks.

in case you missed, like i did, here is the video for “just that kind of girl”

coming out of the closet, of sorts

a few months before august and everything after, counting crows debut, came out, i read a glowing piece in rolling stone. the hypberole police would have had a field day with this blurb, but even in all its over stretching glory it still pulled me in. i am, or at least was, easy like that. i had to go to the only cool record shop in macomb, rockin robins - this was during my stint at w.iu., to order it, on tape mind you. i counted down the days like i was 7 and it christmas eve until it was released. admittedly, i loved the hell outta that record for quite a long time. it didnt even matter that every time i went to bar with karaoke some dumbass was butchering “mr jones.” even though i loved the record, something seemed off about the group as a whole. mostly in part to mr duritz and his penchant for being a bit annoying. from the beginning the record felt like this was going to be my one night stand with the counting crows, albeit a wonderful one. god damn, if i was not right. i picked up there sophmore record, and knew i had to stop there. sure, it had some good songs, but as a whole they seemed to be going in a direction i didnt feel like traveling.? i dont know what the hell they are up to lately, and its probably better that way.? i dont want whatever it is to tarnish, at least more than they have already, a perfectly good part time lover.

wanted to say happy veterans day, you are all braver souls than me.

remember when ?punk pop? meant something else all together, or nothing at all? When it was just two words describe scrappy catchy songs? when it wasn?t bought at a mall, ordered online via the CBGB?s store or fashioned by ill-fitting suits? yeah me too…

call it what you want ? power pop, punk, punk pop or just pop. i don?t care. all i care about is bringing you some good songs by some good bands that don?t get the recognition they deserve.

whole wide world ? Wreckless Eric

wreckless eric had a hit in the late 70s with this single for Stiff Records (see also: Rockpile, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury and too many other greats to count) and he?s about to enjoy a resurrection thanks to a plum spot in the new Will Ferrell flick ?Stranger than Fiction.? i hear from reliable sources that its pretty damn good

he is, by the way, on tour and playing some cool house parties…

Dates:
10 Washington DC, The Velvet Lounge www.velvetloungedc.com
11 Moorestown, NJ, House Concert www.jdhouseconcerts.org
12 Somerville, MA, House Concert details: octafish@rcn.com
15 New York, NY, Tonic www.tonicnyc.com

another girl another planet - the only ones

if you were at the last Replacements show at grant park in chicago 1991, like me, you already know this one. here is the original by a great and largely unknown aussie band, the only ones. i honestly dont remember the mats performing this but i was way to busy scamming on chicks to pay much attention.

here is a mats version of the above tune
