thank goodness for wgn! i was about to subject myself to watching some bad fear.net movie on comcast when i noticed that my sox were playin the cubs. perfect television for a particularly chilly/lazy sunday afternoon here in atlanta. i will say this, the cubs have bought themself a pretty fine team this year, and if they dont make it to the playoffs, i dont think they ever will again. as for my boys, they have an outstanding team too, i just hope they can win 95+ games this year. hopefully that will be good enough to get them back to the playoffs. frankly, i think the twins and the tigers were flukes last year.

in other news, the new wilco, sky blue sky, is an interesting listen. i dont know what i was expecting but it definitely wasn’t the songs that make up said record. so, my first listen was not one of pure enjoyment, in fact i think i wasnt very psyched at all. the second listen definitely unfurled a few gems, most notably the latter half of the record including “hate it here,” “walken” and “what light.” there is this weird grateful dead and steely dan vibe that is kinda hard to get past, but also makes the recording kinda endearing.

todays offering is a killer bleach era performance recorded live @ the bling pig in ann arbor, michigan. its not the greatest sound quality, but the energy is pretty spectacular.

i know i am a bit behind the curve here, well about a month or so, but this here besnard lakes record is pretty phenomenal. if you took the best parts of my bloody valentine’s loveless, but with vocals you can actually understand, and threw in harmonies reminiscent of 60’s/70’s california inspired pop would have the besnard lakes. if jagjaguwar were a woman i would make sweet love to her just about every night. everything they put out is pretty damn fantastic.

and you lied to me

i also wanted to mention atlanta’s own the coathangers, which i discovered through the wonderful cable and tweed. they are an all girl, and quite sexy, poppy punk group with cheerleader-esque leanings. the songs are quite comical but seem to have a socially concious undertones. so check em out if they sound up your alley.

if you are feeling up to it, feel free to download or stream the third installment of the captains dead podcast. i had visions of grandeur when i woke up this morning, but those visions quickly caved to the side of laziness. there is some good shit that you may not have heard before, featuring the likes of lois, tad, jolene, mike johnson, ox, etc…. i am going to attempt to do a weekly podcast from here on out. we’ll see how long that lasts.

i dont know about you but i always find it weird when i venture into the bathroom to do whatever it is i need to do and the water in the toilet is moving to and fro. i can see if someone recently flushed said toilet, but when it has been sitting dormant for hours, i find that a bit disconcerting. i just fear the toilet is going to turn into some bidet possessed by satan himself. completely childish, i realize this.

one life experience that i relish, and can sometimes make everything seem right with the world for at least a few minutes, is hearing a unexpectedly song that fits perfectly with a moment. the other evening the lady and i were sitting at one of our favorite non-local haunts having a few beers and just appreciating each others company sans child. it was a cool evening but warm enough to be enjoying said beers and smokes outdoors on the “smokers” patio. there was a brief silence between our topics of conversation when “no one knows” by queens of the stone age came blastin through the tinny speakers. i dont know what it was but it made the rest of the evening seem pretty magical.

so, in the queens honor here the are performing on 3.27.05 @ the 930 club in washington, dc.
