800.588.2300 empire!

i have to thank one half of the lovely young gals that make up red/blondehead, leah, for bringing birmingham’s through the sparks and their recently released lazarus beach into my realm of consciousness.

lazarus beach is a confusing record and it really only started making sense to meafter about a dozen or so listens. lazarus beach whisks innocently by like a lazy sunday drive in god only knows, georgia. your only company are your thoughts and the songs playing on the lone am station picked up by that shitty kraco radio. its not until you get past these sun-on-your-face-not-a-care-in-the-world-peaceful-easy-southern feelings that lazarus beach begins to reveal its somewhat uneasy underbelly, not unlike the south itself. like behind every smile and open hand or in this case sunny melody there is a real sense of dread but this despondent feeling only rears its head if you let it. to compare lazarus beach, in some regards, to wilco’s summerteeth would not be out of line me thinks.

dads doing his up with white people routine

so ga ga ga ga is making its rounds the interweb and who am i to pass up taking it for a whirl? after a bunch of listens i have come to a premature conclusion; its probably their best work, or at least most consistent, since girls can tell. both kill the moonlight and gimme fiction are so damn frustrating cause there are some really great songs but some are almost unlistenable. maybe not so much unlistenable but really boring, but lacking in any kind of soul.

ga ga ga ga ga is going to be released on july 10 on merge and i am sure you will be able to find out more info closer to the release date on their official site / myspace.

the fabulous ladybug transistor are releasing cant wait another day on june 5. sadly, they lost their drummer san fadyl on 4.25 - more info here.

the first single “three days from now” has a great parsons era byrds vibe to it. i am definitely diggin it.

whattup dis yo boy pipelayer. show you what i got…

work that ottoman dude! impregnate that bitch! work it!!!!!!!!!

i have seen a lot of ridiculous things throughout my years but this quite possibly trumps em all. seriously, my brain cannot fathom the hilarity that makes up this video by none other than peer pressure! the sad thing is is that it is so fuckin hilarious that i cant even laugh. so confused. so very confused.

yes, greedo; i was just coming to see your boss.

its not rare for me to listen a song or an album over and over again in succession many times over. i am very compulsive that way - it drives my wife nuts. speaking of my compulsive behaviour the one album i have been, once again, diggin deep into is david vandervelde’s fantastic the moonstation house band. what drew me back into moonstation was the lead single and probably my favorite of the year, “nothin no.” i, seriously, have listened to that song more than a few hundred times over the past week. there is so much more going on, musically, on “nothin no” and really throughout the record that i originally gave it credit for. it even sounds wonderful in my shitty ipod supplied head phones, i could only imagine how great it would sound with a pair of shures or some brand of the like.

secretly canadian is releasing “nothin no” as an extended single featuring a couple new songs and an alternate version of “feet of a liar” which was recorded for daytrotter.

listen up american catastrophe you gots a lot of balls naming your first record after the first and finest of the rambo installments, first blood. ah, you didnt? ok, nevermind. there is no denying the guy sounds a lot like nick cave but they seem to have a more appalachian folk vibe much like 16 horsepower. hopefully the whole record is half as cool as “the well.” the only problem i forsee is that his voice my get kinda samey, not unlike mr caves, after awhile. i’ll report later uponan actual listen of said record.

the well

hey underpants!

i make no excuses to the fact that my favorite movie of all time is the blues brothers and oddly has been since i was about 12. thats either a testament to the greatness and timelessness of the movie or the fact that i have not matured much since 12. probably a combination of both. regardless of which is true there is no denying that belushi and aykroyd made one hell of a team musically and of course comedically. then, of course, aykroyd had to go and fuck it up, royally.

here are the boys and their band opening up for the dead at winterland on new years eve in 78.

are you being driven? or do you drive?

has anyone seen the aqua teen movie? i have heard from reliable sources that its pretty great/fucked up. i have been meaning to but alas it has not come to fruition. so, i am guessing, at this point, that i will be waiting for the dvd. it should be out fairly shortly, i hope. one of my top 3 favorite groups, superchunk, is releasing a 7″, i love vinyl, for the single “misfits and mistakes” which appears on the aqua teen movie soundtrack. the b-side features none other than meatwad on vocals. you can pre-order it here for a lousy 5 bucks.

in other superchunk news, they will be playing a benefit show, along side of the mountain goats, @ the metro in chicago on june 20. more info can be found here.

as a reminder, wilco’s sky blue sky is out this week but you can still get a bunch of cool shit with your order. check out these awesome wilco toys. if they weren’t 50 bucks i would definitely be all over em. they also opened a pretty cool uncle tupelo shop, with some pretty cool stuff, alongside of the wilco shop.

have you listened to hallelujah the hills as of yet? i wrote about em a few months back. the recently signed to misra and are going to be releasing collective psychosis begone fairly shortly.

hallelujah the hills yeah they named a song after themselves. so what?

ok, as it turns out there is like 60 tracks making up bedhead vol 2. so, this is going to 3 part series.
