you know the message you’re sending out to the world with these sweatpants?

photo possibly taken by ann marie young

man, i cant believe its almost september. that means its gettin to be that time. the time to start flushing out your end of the year best of lists. yeah i know theres still 4 months left but what else is supposedly coming out the remainder of the year besides the new band of horses, malkmus and chinese democracy?! i know theres more than that, but i am seriously drawing a blank. with that said, i think my top 3 favorites of the year thus far are isbell’s sirens of the ditch, iron and wine’s the shepherds dog and of montreal’s hissing fauna.. although ga ga ga ga ga, chris whitley and jeff lang’s dislocation blues and the besnard lakes are the dark horse are knockin on the door. what am i missing and what are you guys lovin this year?

if you have not heard whitley and jeff lang’s dislocation blues, please go get it now. their version of dylan’s “changing of the guard” is absolutely heart wrenching and alone worth the price of admission.

lastly, and probably most importantly. have you heard about this kid, eric volz, who is wrongly imprisoned in nicaragua? the story is so fucked up, it almost seems like a movie plot, i cant even fathom what he is going through right now. please visit the site that was set up and read what has happened to him. thanks to drew for bringing this to my attention!

welcome to the first installment of “the same 5 questions with…” the first willing participant to take on these 5, albeit very lame questions is montreal, canada’s bad flirt - who play the treehouse in lawrenceville, ga on saturday evening.

the six members that make up bad flirt conjure up a sound that reminds me of makin out. not like the awkward mashin of your early teens, but like the late night alcohol fueled encounters some of us have somehow talked ourselves into and then only very awkwardly talked ourselves out of sometime the next day. maybe its cause lead flirt jasamine’s vocals makes my brain recall a dream i once had about makin out with juliana hatfield, who jasamine kinda sounds like. or maybe its their three guitar attack that gives me that tingly feeling. who knows? whatever it is, bad flirt make a sound that i truly dig. even if i aint gettin any. at least, at the moment.

1. your record would be the perfect soundtrack to what?
An episode of Thats So Raven.

2. what are you putting off today that you wont get to tomorrow?
showering and finally buying healthy food. ah, the luxuries of tour.

3. we are all our own worst critic. is there anything, no matter how minuscule, about your record that annoys you?
Jared Leto’s harmonies aren’t what we hoped they would be…but we made do with what we had.

4. is it better to has been or a never was?
Has beens still get royalty checks.

5. tell the world a secret.
We hate babies. But we love puppies!

they have a record coming out sometime next year, and this is a track for that yet unnamed record.

heart of darkness

let it be known that after putting all this together, i watched the video for the above track and what does it have two people doing at the beginning? thats right makin out! i knew it!

their self titled debut can be purchased through their site, or maybe even at their show. check their myspace page for upcoming dates.

i talked about the ladies in atlanta’s coathangers about a month ago but i thought they deserved to be regurgitated. their new record, which i have not heard as of yet, is out on 9.4 and have made a couple more tracks from the release available for public consumption. i dont know what it is, but for some reason whenever i hear the coathangers i feel like getting laid. wow, i must really be deprived. two mildly sexual references in one post.

it actually needs to get a little hotter out. seriously. the white people are melting!

as i have stated many times before, i am lazy and for a lazy man sifting through myspace can be downright obnoxious. i actually had some time on my hands today so i decided that i would check out some bands on the myspace. here’s where it get frustrating. i actually ran across quite a few pretty cool but they dont have any tracks available for posting other than what can be found on their myspace page. what these peeps should do is spend the zero dollars on a blogger or wordpress acct and then spend 20 bucks for year on a service like yousendit or whatever so they can host their own music. shit, you can get a dreamhost acct with more bandwidth and storage than anyone could ever use for like 10 bucks for a year. if they cant afford the 10 bucks, etc then they should get together with some of their musician friends and get the service together. with all that said, you should still check these guys out called cartright. perfect music for a late night drunken love fest.

speaking of perfect, or at least damn near close to it. the debut by travels, a band made up of anar from metal hearts and mona of victory at sea - two bands that i think i have heard of, but cant say with 100 percent certaintity, is like i said damn near perfect. together to the two make a lovely fuzzed out racket with some other worldly harmonies that are kinda reminiscent of a more focused besnard lakes crossed with the likes of yo la tengo and/or low. their debut is set to be released on oct 30 and you can preorder through emusic and itunes. the first 500 physical copies of the record will come with one of a kind artwork done by mona. you can get those through their myspace page.

here’s some stuff from a band that i am not afraid to admit that i dig, the eagles. its not like i listen to them all that much but every 6 months or so i will throw on the greatest hits, have a few beers and relax. this boot is supposedly called crazed and snake eyed and was recorded sometime in 74 or 75.

you’re on a gravy train with biscuit wheels!

good afternoon all! anyone planning on goin to the echo project fest down here in atlanta? its not actually in atlanta but its just south of the city, in fairburn. i am super psyched cause its literally 3 miles from my crib. if you havent heard about it, it definitely looks like it could be pretty awesome. some the acts include cat power, son volt, flaming lips, phil lesh, clap your hands, spearhead, the roots, rjd2, les claypool, polyphonic spree, man man, and supposedly a shit load more are going to be announced sometime soon. its going on on oct 12 - 14. check the site for details.

anyone hear the new jeremy enigk record, the missing link, as of yet? it comes out tomorrow and i have yet to only hear these tracks, “oh john” and “river to sea” - see the video below. hopefully one of these days i will get to see jeremy live. the time i saw sunny day open up for velocity girl @ the metro way back when still stands as one of the greatest performances i have ever witnessed.

i’m too tired not to be with you

i admit it. i95 from dc to richmond broke me yesterday. what should have been maybe a two hour jaunt turned into a 6 hour nightmare. i, seriously, cant believe that there are that many people traveling that corridor. to those of you who travel it regularly, i applaud, but dont envy you. not one single fuckin bit.

other than that the vacation was a much needed respite from my everyday life - i guess thats what vacations are for. we ate a lot, drank a lot, fished a lot and shot the shit a lot. it was very relaxing to say the least. although, i could have taken a few more naps. i also kayaked for the first time. which was a helluva lot of fun. i can definitely see myself getting into it on a regular basis. we got to be very friendly with a black lab named dante as he would swim across our little channel, which was filled with jellyfish, to come visit us just about every day. while i am glad to be home, i am going to need another 2 week vacation to recuperate from my one week vacation. if you are feeling a bit voyeuristic here are some pics from said vacation.

am i the only one watching brett michael’s rock of love? i almost hate myself for actually finding michael’s quite likable. go sam and/or jes! fuck lacey!

i didnt open one email this past week. needless to say, i didnt get a chance to listen to anything new. so, here is some stuff i am remotely familiar with and/or at least sounded interesting.

firstly, here is the first song off of josh ritter’s upcoming the historical conquests of josh ritter, which is out on tuesday. historically, i have not been a fan of mr ritters work, but i am diggin this track quite a bit. so, we’ll see how this record fare’s in turning me into a fan.

i found it hard to turn pash away after reading that they were described as “a dismemberment plan meets kelly clarkson type of pop.” they were also likened to one of my favorite 90’s bands, velocity girl. still even armed with this knowledge i have yet to actually listen to em, but i will.

call me a pussy but when i heard of chris whitley’s death i got a little teary eyed. no other artist moved me the way chris did/does. no other artist could shake the foundations of my soul like chris could and most likely no other artist will again in such a way.

here he is playing in bremen on 9.19.98. its a damn near perfect collection of songs and a fuckin unreal recording. this shit right here is raw and real. he changed my life. hopefully he can do the same to at least one of you.
