has anyone played, well not so much played as clicked around, this game hotel? i happened to catch a brief piece on g4tv the other morning. they proclaimed that it was a great time waster, and while that is kinda true its too bizarre to be fully appreciated. i, typically, dont things neatly laid out for me to understand but this one was just a wee bit over my head.
if you are going to the celebrate brooklyn fest this evening make sure you get to the prospect park bandshell early, like 7 pm sharp, to catch friends of captains dead, the teenage prayers. following the prayers are the big sleep and headlining the evening is the hold steady.

a few years ago, well probably 8, i picked up beat the retreat: songs by richard thompson, for no reason other than i wanted it and i was drunk. at the time i was only slightly familiar with “shoot out the lights” but bob mould, los lobos, bonnie raitt, evan dando, rem, etc. all make appearances. so, it was pretty hard to pass up, especially at $5.99. lyrically, richard writes amazing songs. vocally he sometimes can get a bit grating. he reminds me of, but not anywhere as annoying as victoria williams. both write amazing songs, but i would rather listen to someone else sing ‘em. maybe its just me. although, i have softened on that stance in the past years but not by much. am i the only one?
in 1981 richard got with a few fellow friends/musicians to form the gp’s, which if you believe allmusic, was meant to be primarily a “pub band.” judging that statement strictly by this show, i would say that description is pretty right on. although, they make up probably the greatest “pub band” anyone would ever witness.
here they are playing on 9.27.81 @ the capitol theatre in horsham, great britian and as it turns out it was their last performance. most of these are covers for they only wrote a few songs while they were together.

in case you forgot, like i did, athens pop fest is going on this weekend. the lineup includes the likes of ted leo, birds of avalon, daniel johnston, circulatory system, we versus shark, tullycraft, casper and the cookies and many more. my buddy arunas, who is the manager of darkroom in chicago has been raving about casper and cookies the last couple times we spoke. from all his reports they are pretty killer live and as luck would have it, i got an email from them last night reminding me about athens pop fest and that they have a new ep called 3 and a half stars, which is an un ep like 11 songs, that they will be selling at their upcoming shows. here is one of the songs from said ep. check their site for upcoming dates.

i maybe getting ahead of myself here, but i have a really great feeling about canada’s octoberman’s run from safety. i am hoping its going to be 07’s oneida road, my favorite record from 06. i know something is going to be great when, during the first few bars of the song, i begin praying that the vocals and/or the lyrics dont suck. am i the only one that does that? possible complications avoided cause marc’s lyrics and vocals are both pretty stellar. this is one record i am going to be waiting with baited breath to hear. check it out!

in one of my more boneheaded moves, i shied away from andrew bird for quite a while and for no good reason other than i am stubborn. i have since learned the error of my ways. here he is performing in Bremen, Sendesaal on 5.25.07. this is taken from an fm broadcast. thanks to the guy who taped it.

anyone go to lolla this past weekend? if so how was it? i watched some of the coverage via various sites and it didnt look as appealing as the past two years. sure, i would have not passed on an opportunity to go but something seemed missing. or maybe i am just getting too fuckin old to tolerate.
27 years? seriously? i cant believe al jourgensen has been around that long?! how old is he for christs sake? gotta be pushin 50. thats cool though. admittedly, i am a huge fair weather ministry fan. the last record i actually dug was pslam 69, which i still listen to with great frequency. everything pre 69 was and is pretty great, everything after not so much. apparently, the september 18 release the last sucker will be the last anyone will ever hear from uncle al as ministry. he’s moving to palm beach to soak up the sun and start having dinners at 3 o’clock. luckily, the last sucker doesnt, erm, suck. its much more in the vein of 69 and its a fitting bookend to an interesting career, at least as ministry is concerned.

let it be known that i have never listened to the concretes, nor have i heard her work with peter, bjorn and john. all thats going to change after listening to victoria bergman’s new project, taken by trees. sure, i have only heard the first single off open field but what a voice this woman has. even if the songs sucked, which i hope they dont, i think i could look past that little nugget and just lose myself in said voice.
open field is being released on 9.11 - OMG!!!!!!!! isnt it too soon?!
