In the mouth of a particle board desert

“No way. The Norrsten is more your style.”

Wow(ee zowee). A friend emailed us the following link and said, “Am I being PUNK’D?” She loves Pavement *and* IKEA — to the Nth — so when this “Shop with a member of Pavement at IKEA contest” popped up on her pvmnt lstgrp, she lost her plastic-coated shit.

But yes, it’s true. $500 and the caring Queer eye of one of the 90s greatest exports could be yours (member as yet unknown). We just wanna know — are Malkmus or Nastanovich gonna be there to help us put the JÄMSUNDA sideboard together? Cause that’s when you’d really need them.

800.588.2300 empire!

i have to thank one half of the lovely young gals that make up red/blondehead, leah, for bringing birmingham’s through the sparks and their recently released lazarus beach into my realm of consciousness.

lazarus beach is a confusing record and it really only started making sense to meafter about a dozen or so listens. lazarus beach whisks innocently by like a lazy sunday drive in god only knows, georgia. your only company are your thoughts and the songs playing on the lone am station picked up by that shitty kraco radio. its not until you get past these sun-on-your-face-not-a-care-in-the-world-peaceful-easy-southern feelings that lazarus beach begins to reveal its somewhat uneasy underbelly, not unlike the south itself. like behind every smile and open hand or in this case sunny melody there is a real sense of dread but this despondent feeling only rears its head if you let it. to compare lazarus beach, in some regards, to wilco’s summerteeth would not be out of line me thinks.

if you are a pavement completist, this here is supposedly their first live recording. its not so much a live “i was there” type of a recording, but a live radio broadcast that just so happened to be taped - something i used to love doing. KDVS out of stockton, ca was the originating source, by the way. honestly, its sometimes unlistenable, but its still pretty cool to have, i guess.

damn you engadget! pavement on the bbc

i stole this photo from engadget, which as i have stated before is the best site, technology or otherwise on the net. one of the many things that i love about engadget is that the staffs collective writing style is very conversational, and they dont get too technical just to prove they can - see boring as hell and really quite pompus. the past weeks visits to engadget have ben a bit painful though. with all the ps3, wii and zune it made me realize that my pocketbook doesnt match my technological aspirations/wants. regarding the zune, i dont want one but i still would love to play with it. i found this tid bit of information pretty funny. in order to install the zune you must register it first - which is totally insane if you ask me. i dont believe that apple requires this, do they? apparently, a zune was purchased a couple of days early at some mega retailer and when they went to install it they kept getting errors. as it turns out in order to install the software it must connect to the zune servers/database which are not up yet because the zune has yet to be officially released. i think that its a fair assumption that the zune is going to bomb.

my wife and i have been together for almost 9 years, and in that time there has not been a week that has gone by that i have not listened to a pavement record in her presence. it has not been until recently that she has finally started sharing my love, of pavement that is. dont know what the hell changed in her brain, but damn bitches be crazy.

this can now be found here

ok, here is a question i am posing to your dear person(s) i have heard some rumblings that its a pain in the ass to download each individual track especially when a post contains more than 10 tracks.? would you prefer that i provide a link to a .rar file that contains all the tracks? keep in mind that i am fairly lazy, so maybe what i will do then is only provide a couple of track direct links, but the also provide the .rar file. let me know if you care.

steve update and pavement in montana

Pavementband.jpg
steve, the intern, is dead. long live steve!!!!

it should come to no surprise that being of the early 30’s demographic that i am, one of my favorite, if not my favorite, bands is pavement. depending on the day it fluctuates between pavement, guided by voices, superchunk, wilco and a few others. it’s sad to admit, but i am an aging hipster. one day i woke up and was married, had a mortgage, two car payments, and a wee lad. all of this and i still feel like i am 15, at least mentally. dont think it wont happen to you, people!

hearing slanted and enchanted for the first time struck me the same way as it takes a nation of millions. it was a glorious racket that was an absolute mess, not unlike my life at the time. it sounded as if everything could fall apart at any moment, but they kept on moving forward regardless. it truly was a life affirming record. if i thought that slanted and enchanted was life affirming, then crooked rain was life changing. we’ll touch on that at a later date.
