mama don’t like tattle-tales

hey there. whatcha wearin? word!? hope everyone had a splendid weeks end. mine was very short lived, but i gots 4 days off coming up starting on tuesday, but then work 10 days straight. oy! i would almost work 22 days in a row and get my 8 days of time off all in a row, but thats just me.

i get a lot of emails asking where shit is, not like “where are my keys” or “where are those johansson nudes you keep talkin bout,” but shit like “where is the rest of the replacements show, i cant find it.” ok, here’s how this works. at the bottom of every post are these things called “tags” and they are your friends. say you want to find more posts about bob dylan. all you do is click the bob dylan tag and it will take you to everything found here that is tagged “bob dylan.” for example, click here. that should take you to all said posts regarding bob dylan. pretty simple. got it? i should sticky this right next to the safari warning that nobody reads. fuckers….

nashvillian, josh preston is a dude that if given the opportunity could win over a lot of hearts, or so me thinks. he reminds me quite a bit of ron sexsmith, you know nothing flashy, just talented guy with great vocals and the songwriting to match. which sadly, doesnt go very far nowadays. still peeps, like myself, that dig the unreleased adams stuff like “memphis” aka “drunk and fucked up,” “gimme sunshine,” “idiots rule the world,” etc should definitely find something to dig in mr preston.

in anticipation of his upcoming lp, exit sounds, he is offering up a 4 track ep, for free, for your downloading pleasure which is entitled the complex wooden heart. exit sounds is out on 5.13 and available via me an the machine.

i cant vouch for anything other than this track mix thingy, but considering the company that alaska in winter is keeping i have a good feeling about em. alaska in winter is art student and apparently musician, brandon bethancourt, who spent a semester in alaska recording the songs that would eventually make it on dance party in the balkans. upon returning home to new mexico he teamed up with wunderkind zach condon of beirut, heather trost of a hawk and a hacksaw, and a host of others, or so the press release states to put the finishing touches on dance party in the balkans. the mix sounds almost exactly as what the title of the record implies.

dance party in the balkans was released last year in the uk, but was finally released in the u.s. on 3.25.

do you guys/gals dig saul williams? i still really cant decide. i kinda want to, but on the other hand i’m just kinda, meh. i downloaded and actually paid for the reznor produced niggy tardust, but never find a good time or i guess the right mood to listen to it. for the unitiated here be a track from said niggy tardust.

here is an interesting pumpkins boot which goes by the name of reel time sessions. this is circa 1989 and i have very little information on it other than what is found here. this is a whopping 35 tracks as opposed to the 12 tracks i usually have found circulating under this title.

i have no idea whats going on right now

sup dickweeds? if you have been putting off signing up with amie street, you may want to rethink that because starting today they are offering up the entire beggars group, matador and polyvinyl catalogues - some, actually a lot, of which you can get for free. i downloaded 5 or 6 records, which i already had but wanted on my new computer, before getting cut off. but right now, a few of the pavement, yo la tengo, belle and sebastian, cat power discs are free and some as minimal as 16 cents. the highest a track will go to is 98 cents and if you add 25 bucks to your account you get 25 bucks, free. it’s probably worth your time…prices are rising just to let you know, but still 2 bucks for wowee zowee is a bargain..

i was and actually remain to be a huge drive like jehu/hot snakes/whatever other offshoot fan, and when a band comes a long keeping that torch alive like dragged by horses i cant help but to be a little psyched.

their new record, deep in the woods, is set to be released on 3.12 and can be pre-ordered via their myspace page.

for those interested, you can stream the new marah record here. i havent listened to it yet, but as seeing they have made a few of my favorite records of recent memory, i dont see them disappointing now. unless of course they go down the float away… alley - that record truly is a piece of shit. btw, angels of destruction out today. they play at smiths olde bar on 1.31.08.

here are two sets of peel sessions by captain beefheart. i only recently got into his work, after years of being told i should. thus far i have only gotten safe as milk and trout mask replica, but hopefully will move forward. anyone got any other recommendations?

sup hommies? not much going on, just trying to wrap my head around my best of the year list, since its that time. one problem i always run into is this: you have one record that is great from start to finish, then you have record two that is maybe has maybe one or two misses on it, but has like 2, 3 or 4 songs on it that are just phenomenal. now, do you go with the more solid record, or the less solid but has those songs that blow you away? thats kinda where i am at the moment.

in other news, amy winehouse aint lookin/doin so hot

one of my favorite records of the ‘04 was aloha’s post rocky/poppy here comes everyone. their sophmore release, some echoes, was a bit of a disappointment considering how much i dug their debut, but it seems like they have shaken off whatever kind of rust with their recently released light works.

aloha’s drummer, cale parks, released his illuminated manuscript last year, which flew under my radar, and from what i can tell sounds pretty cool. sounds kinda like postal service, but more 4 tracky and less ben gibbardish. he’s got a bunch of songs streaming on his myspace page.

you know the message you’re sending out to the world with these sweatpants?

photo possibly taken by ann marie young

man, i cant believe its almost september. that means its gettin to be that time. the time to start flushing out your end of the year best of lists. yeah i know theres still 4 months left but what else is supposedly coming out the remainder of the year besides the new band of horses, malkmus and chinese democracy?! i know theres more than that, but i am seriously drawing a blank. with that said, i think my top 3 favorites of the year thus far are isbell’s sirens of the ditch, iron and wine’s the shepherds dog and of montreal’s hissing fauna.. although ga ga ga ga ga, chris whitley and jeff lang’s dislocation blues and the besnard lakes are the dark horse are knockin on the door. what am i missing and what are you guys lovin this year?

if you have not heard whitley and jeff lang’s dislocation blues, please go get it now. their version of dylan’s “changing of the guard” is absolutely heart wrenching and alone worth the price of admission.

changing of the guard

lastly, and probably most importantly. have you heard about this kid, eric volz, who is wrongly imprisoned in nicaragua? the story is so fucked up, it almost seems like a movie plot, i cant even fathom what he is going through right now. please visit the site that was set up and read what has happened to him. thanks to drew for bringing this to my attention!
