omg! im having a rap attack!

i just got done listening to colbert’s i am america and its pretty damn funny, not surprisingly. it was awesome hearing him talk all sexy and shit about how the ladies like nothing better than a “big sack” but actually referring to “something a cartoon bandit would carry out of a bank.” the entire sex and upbringing/sports chapters were, at times, tear inducing funny. the only chapter that was kind of a bore was that on religion, but thats my own hang up cause i typically find any discussion on religion to be rather pointless. even colbert couldn’t breathe life into the tired and boring arguments. definitely recommended.

anyone going to band of horses at the park tavern on sunday and/or the echo festival? i will not be attending the echo but will be in attendance, sans wife, at the horses show. so, if you seem some guy, most likely with a white sox hat on, stop on over and say hello or go fuck yourself. its all the same to me.

i think the first swear i ever heard in a song was run dmc’s “peter piper” off raising hell. i was in junior high. so you could imagine how elated and giddy i was when i heard such profanity coming through my cheap boombox speakers. it was the greatest thing i have ever heard in my life, at the time. i didnt know shit, of course, cause all i cared about was showing off to my friends that i had a tape that the guys said shit, dick, fuck, etc. yeah, they were impressed but thats not the point. little did i know i was listening to one of the best hip hop records ever created. to this day it stands as such.

here they are playing at the apollo in 1985. its an fm broadcast so you will hear some pretty funny dj inter and outerludes. thanks to the guy on dime for unearthing this gem.

don’t you dare take the name of texas in vain

anyone going to see isbell this sunday in atlanta? i will be there with my lady enjoying a late 7 year anniversary nights out sans child. its free so there really is no good excuses not to go.

i have given cease to begin the twice over since i got home and for those hoping for a everything all the time part 2 dont go holdin your breathe. when ben said this was going to be a more southern record he wasnt kidding. i can say after two listens though that its pretty fuckin great albeit not as immediately accessible as the before mentioned record. in case you havent heard it here is “is there a ghost” from cease to begin.

is there a ghost

there was and never will be another band quite like morphine. mark sandman, r.i.p., and co. were truly a one in a million type of band. it would be almost impossible, and probably quite embarrassing, to attempt to recreate their sound, but even more difficult to try and recreate their mood. as far as i am concerned, there is no greater soundtrack to a late night/early morning, that has been filled with too many smokes and too much booze, than any morphine record. classic stuff.

here they are performing @ lehigh university on 4.26.98. its a soundboard, btw.

you wasted my clearisil on another picture of thor?

sup peoples? if you have not noticed i have had to disable the music player that usually accompanies all posted tracks. there has been some unscrupulous activity going on behind the scenes and until i ban all the ip’s, which is about half of china, that are causing all the issues, the music player will remain down. you can, of course, still download the stuff as usual and if you want to stream it just click on the track. a new window should open up.

for those in the atlanta area, lucero is playing at the earl tomorrow evening. unfortunately, i will not be in attendance due to scheduling conflicts. they are coming back sometime in october though.

two other atlanta shows i wanted to make mention of, and are both free, are jason isbell at the park tavern on 9.9 and the apples in stereo, also at the park tavern on 9.23. its part of 99x’s unplugged in the park series.

have you folks heard of caleb boddicker, or boddicker for short, as of yet? its wunderkind’s like this that just make me sick. the story goes that at 16 he recorded a 22 track demo in his bedroom and ended up sending up 1000 copies of it. of course, his run of good luck doesnt end there. if it did i probably wouldnt be talking him now would i? isaac brock ended up getting his paws on a copy and passed it along to the folks at sub pop. fast forward 4 years and he is doing a 3 week recording stint, which would result in his official debut record big lionhearted and the gallant man, with my man brian deck at engine studios. it would seem that this pairing of boddicker and deck was a no brainer if not a match made in some weird alternate universe. boddicker’s brand of microphones/califone/sparklehorse brand of disjointed pop is a deck specialty. check it!

there is no sweeter voice in all of music than the one owned by mary lou lord. couple her voice with her choice song selections and in my mind there is no reason she isnt more popular. i just dont understand it?! anyway here she is peforming in portland on 10.4.97
