kicking television

While I was at Bill Janovitz last night watching Tom Perrotta rock “Powderfinger” on the guitar (dude can type. dude can rock), I was missing this: Wilco on The Colbert Report.

“Wilco is on the show tonight,” Colbert introduced earlier. “Their real fans will listen to the interview on vinyl.”

THE INTERVIEW

NEW SONG, “WILCO”

“Let me try to match your energy…. I think my endochrine system just stopped producing hormones.”

i want one of these, really badly. if you are wondering what it is, it is a darth vader lamp. duh! the face looks like a piece of rootbeer flavored hard candy, yum, and his helmet looks like its made of evil sequins. all of which makes it even the more awesomer! want one? click here

sadly, lucy’s fur coat is just one band in a long line of many san diego based bands that have gone the way of the cassette tape. during the early - mid 90’s it seemed like their was just a shitload of great bands comin out of san diego. then after a year or so they just rolled out like a fog, never to be heard from again. the music, on the other hand, was kinda like teenage love makin. hard, fast and no style, but thats what made em great. lucy’s fur coat’s jaundice is what i would catagorize as the epitome of the san diego scene - at least from the outside looking in. the record is a hot mess and sounds like it was recorded over a long weekend that included, but not limited to copious amounts of beer and weed… its absolutely glorious though.

luckily for you, the gentelmen of lucys fur coat have both of their records available for download free o’ charge.

that was by far the lamest transformer, but yet i loved it so.  anyone going to see transformers tomorrow or over the weeks end? i am hoping to make it out on friday or sunday, or actually whenever my wife lets me.  my house is not so much a dictatorship as it is i have to use my “get out jail” cards wisely.  as much as i love my son, having a child really puts a damper on my going out and fuckin around time.

anyone going to see isbell next week at either the in store @ criminal or the show @ the earl? i will be hitting up both, lord willing.

not in the mood to talk about anything rignt now, but will instead encourage everyone to listen to the kamikaze hearts oneida road if you havent already.  in case you didnt know it was my favorite record of 2006 and tis quite amazing.  please do check em out.

i’ll let you in on a little secret, i am none too bright.  i have been using wordpress for almost two years now and just realized there was a “continue reading this post, break option.”  yeah its right there next to the photo button, the photo button i use every day.  anyway, you will begin seeing that continuation notification if i feel a post is getting rather lengthy.  shit, you guys know how this stuff works.

since i am on a live wilco kick as of late.  here they are playing at bogarts in cincinnati on 11.5.99.  this is a particularly awesome show.  part two will be posted later today.  the show is after the break.

i thank the big baby jesus above that the day of infamy, the iphone release date, has passed. now, we must wade through extended, see bullshit, coverage of said device at just about every tech website imaginable - most notably two of my favorites, engadget and gizmodo. as it turns out, and not surprisingly, there are few issues arising after making their purchases. a few that i would find quite annoying if i had purchased one are: activations taking greater than 24 hours, most 3rd party head phones dont work and it turns out the iphone doesnt work with 64 bit xp or vista. even with all these annoyances i still wish sprint had gotten it. i dont understand why oh why apple would team up with att - probably the worst network out there. i had att for 5 years and their tdma service was awesome but as soon as i switched to gsm all bets were off. what they claimed and what was delivered were two totally separate things. that was in chicago, then when i came to atlanta and cingular took over my phone was pretty much unusable 50 percent of the time. i still want one! did any of you guys buy one and if so whats up?

hey, in case you have not heard everyones 6th or 7th favorite canadian ensemble, stars, have a new record, in our bedroom after the war, coming out on sept 25. in case you never heard it, there debut set yourself on fire is pure bliss and i am hoping for more of the same from this one. here’s the first single off in our bedroom..

the night starts here

you can listen to set yourself on fire on the arts and crafts site, here

austinite chris simpson who goes under the monikor, zookeeper, has crafted a wonderful piece of lazy day, going no where in particular pop with his zookeeper debut. suprisingly, he’s been around for awhile in such bands as mineral and the gloria record - anyone ever hear of them - but i have never heard of him until a few days ago. after listening to it repeatedly over the past few days, i can confidently say this will probably end up in my top 10 of the year.

has anyone listened to wilco’ sky blue sky more than 5 times? i know i havent. is there something i am missing? this has been my view of sky blue sky over my 5 +/- listens: meh, getting better, better, skip skip, meh, boring. i know thats six, what can i say? every time i go to listen to it, i find myself skipping over 90% of the tracks which is truly depressing. definitely my most disappointing record in some time. anyway, here they are in 2001 @ the majestic theatre in detroit.

so our friends, and probably best record store in the country, at atlanta’s criminal records has a very cool wilco concert contest going on. as you may or may not know or care, wilco is playing at chastain on tuesday, june 19. well, nonesuch and wilco has hooked up criminal with 10 pairs of tickets that will allow you to catch out their soundcheck - you also get wilco tshirts and tote bags as part of the package. now, one small caveat, the package doesnt include actual tix to the show. so, i guess if you dont have tickets they are going to kick your ass to the curb prior to the show. but if you do have tickets you can possibly win a photo pass to be onstage during their first three songs. any who, if you want to enter send an email to wilco@criminal.com or stop on by.

in other news i happened to view a copy of hostel 2 the other day and if you had any interest in seeing it based on the first one, i would say wait a couple of months for the rental. of course you arent going into this looking for a story line its really all about how over the top eli could get with the blood and guts. sadly, this one is pretty tame in comparison and even the slight plot twist doesnt make up for the fact that its pretty lame.

i am sure most have you have heard the new spoon record, which is fantastic, but in case you have not here is the first single from ga ga ga ga ga.

the underdog

ga ga ga ga ga is set to be released on july 10.

one of my favorites this year is turning out to be the national’s boxer which is kind of a relief considering i absolutely hated alligator. maybe i didnt give alligator enough time but i found nothing redeeming about it on my first few listens. maybe time has been kind to alligator and need to revisit it, but boxer hit me pretty hard right out the box.

here are the men of the national performing live at the white sessions in france on 5.24.07 for a radio performance broadcasted on the 28th.
