sup dickheads? there’s so much to love about dbt’s brighter than creations dark that i really could spend the better part of at least 9 -10 beers gushing over it. there are two things i would like to point out that i think put this dbt record just about every other one. the first being shonna’s backing vocals have been moved to the front of the mix. it has always seemed that her vocals were burried deep underneath the 3 guitar attack, which i have always thought was a god damn shame. no better use of her vocal talents are evident than on the beautifully penned hood track “two daughters and a beautiful wife.” shonna plays the part of the grieving wife as hood spins yarn as the husband who met an untimely death and reminisces of all the shit he left behind. “two daughters..” is probably the best lead track i have heard in a long, long time - truly gorgeous. secondly, i love all the piano/organ fills throughout, which is something that i feel has been missing out on most of the dbt records. this is actually the densest sounding dbt record yet. i didnt even think that was possible. i dont even miss jason, in all honesty. cause i would rather have an isbell solo record as opposed to two or three isbell songs on a typical dbt record. while shonna, at this point, cant replace jason’s voice and skills as a songwriter, her 3 songs are very, very good - “i’m sorry houston” in particular. i know we’re only three months into the new year, but its going to be really hard to beat this as record of the year.

Holy sh*t, this is great. Thanks!!
I love the Purgatory Line, man. Still miss Jason real badly, but there’s some good stuff on here.
For your benefit Captain… downloading with Safari, still isn’t working.
hey Gregor…big fan of the new DBT. Personally, I think if they scaled back a couple of songs, this could be up there with the best of DBT. 2 Daughters, Righteous Path, Daddy Needs a Drink and Opening Act are some of P. Hood’s best work. Looking forward to seeing them again in a couple of months.
Totally agree with your assessment on Brighter… Could be their best yet. Doesn’t Shonna’s “Home Field Advantage” sound like a Jason song that could have been on A Blessing and a Curse? Love your blog.
thanks, kurt and it sure does sound like a jason track. i am really impressed with her stuff, and i admittedly was a little scared at first. cooley’s stuff is just freakin awesome, which his stuff always is, but even moreso on this one. self destructive zones and a ghost to most gotta be two of his best. we need a cooley solo record, soon. i love this line from self-destuctive zones…
