grayson capps: soul brotha #3
the first time i listened to alabama boy, grayson capps, i really had this romantic idea that he was chris whitley incarnate. sadly, well not really sadly, but mr capps his is own man, his own musician. thinking that way does both guys a great disservice. sure, there are some glaring similarities especially in the realm of missed opportunities. if you read any of the two’s bios you will you would definitely find a kind of kinship in such coulda-woulda-shouldas that seemed to marr their professional lives.
grayson is a soul man, not in the classic blues man sense, but his songs of sin, redemption, and everything leading to the two poles makes him such. his plaintive delivery and what you see is what you get lyrics may be a turn off for those looking for a “challenge” but does everything need to push you to the edge of wtf? when something can lovingly carry ya down the river of love and hope and sex and dreams. whatever the hell that is supposed to mean. listen, i you may get my point.
his new record rott n roll is out now, and its pretty great.
