For some reason that I can’t quite put my finger on these videos make me think they may have jumped the shark.
yeah, i dont know paul. i havent listened to SBS since its release, and even though there are a few tracks i dug, the whole experience left me kinda indifferent. i dont know what i was expecting, but SBS was for damn sure not it. i hate to say i agree with those who deemed it “dad rock.” every band deserves one do over, i suppose.
I had the same reaction to SBS. Seeing Tweedy in the Parson suit caused me to compare him to Parsons, which is a tough go.
yeah, you really cant compare the two, suit not withstanding. i still love em, but not in that “i worship everything they do” kinda way.
Tweedy wore the same suit at the Ryman. SBS was a little of a disappointment. But there are some keepers there. Germany shows off Nels virtuoso and shift in band design, which is more present live. But as a whole, it is no where near the caliber of the previous 5 albums.
Not meaning to nitpick, but it would be a Nudie Suit (by inspiration if not actual vintage). Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nudie_suit
Parsons popularized it with the young, outlaw-hip, and Mike Mills (circa “Monster” era). If you ever make it to Nashville and can fork over the wallet-bleeding entrance fee of the Country Music Hall of Fame you can see Parson’s original suit from the famous album cover (with its pot leaves and naked ladies) as well as Nudie Cohn’s sewing machine table tucked back in a corner (upon which is a fantastic naked pinup).
I know it is a late post on this subject, but I read this post last week and I had been on the fence about SBS, but caught them at Cains in Tulsa on Saturday night and they put on one fucking good show (as a point of reference, I had seen them twice before on the Ghost tour). Doesn’t really change any opinion on the SBS album, but that show didn’t indicate to me that they are heading in some sort of negative direction. FYI, they were filming/recording the show so I don’t know what their plan with it is.
kh, they most definitely put on a helluva show. in fact some of the best i have ever been witness too, and admittedly i have not seen them during the SBS tour. i can only imagine that seeing some of SBS performed live would go a long way in my appreciation of the it, but sadly it just hasnt worked as such thus far. i wonder what they were recording it for? new dvd?
That’s the word. Buddy of mine tried to pry some info out of one of the cameramen, but he was tight-lipped about it. In looking around some today, a few people are saying that it was going to be a DVD of some shows on this last stretch, but who the hell knows if that is reliable or not. I know one thing, being in Oklahoma and the ties to the Guthrie music on Mermaid Avenue, they played 5 or 6 songs off those albums so I’d be surprised if those tracks didn’t show up in a DVD.
