i know i am a little slow from time to time, but has anyone tried the service tumblr yet? i have only been playing around with it for a day, but i love it. its exactly what i have been looking for in terms of as a supplement to this joint. i want to update more, but am really, really lazy. tumblr makes it super easy to just share links, photos, stories, music, etc. it literally takes like 10 seconds to create a post. as opposed to the 30 seconds it would take to log into wordpress and do whatever. so, i will be updating my tumblr site probably at least 5 -10 times a day with random shit - some music stuff, but mostly interesting finds from throughout the intertubes.
so, after using tumblr for 48 hours i found that it was way too unreliable for my liking. its still a great service, in theory, but i think they are probably going through some growing pains that i dont reel like putting up with at the moment. as luck would have it, some guy wrote a plugin for wordpress that lets you use your wordpress powered site like tumblr. so, feel free to visit/bookmark the new captains dead supplement, thanksfornothin.
this phil spector 2 cd comp, wall of sound retrospective/a christmas gift for you, recently fell into my lap and if you are at all interested in his work this is really phenomenal. the christmas record is cool for what it is, but the wall of sound recordings is more than worth the price of admission. i cant recommend it enough.
i have been pretty addicted to eric trip’s 93 debut, love tara, which if you didnt know features the lovely voice of julie dorion. its not a brilliant record, not all of them need to be, but its pretty great. here is one of my favorite tracks of it.
admittedly, i am really not a big pink floyd fan, but i found this show to be freakin fantastic. which after listening to a bunch of times has piqued my interest into delving deeper. where should i start?
here they are playing madison square garden on 7.2.77
1. sheep
3. dogs
5. pigs (three different ones)
6. shine on you crazy diamond 1 - 5
8. have a cigar
10. shine on you crazy diamond 6 - 9
11. money
12. us and them

Thanks for posting this, Captain. Can you imagine what Madison Square Garden smelled like when the lights went down that night?
You’ve already started your Floyd explorations in a very good place. Nearly all of this show comes from ‘Animals’ (1977) and ‘Wish You Were Here’ (1975), two very strong albums.
Your next best step is probably ‘Meddle’ (1971), but any Floyd collection is utterly naked without ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ (1973), a magnificent recording that is every bit the classic it’s cracked up to be.
Taken in its entirety, I find ‘The Wall’ (1979) to be a bit much (81 minutes), but it has several terrific, deeply conflicted songs. The early Syd Barrett era (highlight: ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’, 1967) was both more aggressively psychedelic and folkier than the soundscapey stuff from the 1970s. And while there are gems to be found in the transitional period between Syd and ‘Meddle’ (as well as ‘The Final Cut’ (1982), a concept album about R.Waters losing his father in WWII), you’re really better off starting with their 70s material.
I’m fairly dismissive of the post-Waters era (80s-90s), but I’m sure it has its moments too.
By the way, your file links all start with “htp” instead of “http”. I found a way to download most of the show anyway, but you should probably address this!
Cheers– Paul
Man, I am a Pink Floyd fan, but your server may be not: it just can’t guess the correct filenames if you enter invalid references. Starting with the strange “htp” protocol, thru’ the funny-named “8 monkey.mp3″ which should be actually “Money” (a freudian slip, maybe :) ending with the filenames containing spaces… :) All in all, I have no idea for “8 have a cigar.mp3″ and “12 us and them.mp3″, the rest is OK, but I won’t give up.
Ooops… “11 money.mp3″ instead. Anyway, thanks for this post. I’ve forgotten to mention it. :)
I am unable to access or download any of the files for some reason. I want this show, because it’s got an amazing setlist, but I can’t even stream it.
i can access these files either…boo!!
yeah, i fucked up, everyone. of course i just found this out now cause i waste away the day sleeping. again, my quality control sometimes sucks royal balls. should all be good now. sorry.
Can’t download Sheep, (Pigs three different ones), Have a Cigar or Us and Them. The rest are OK.
Cheers
ha, ha! i swear. ok, all good now.
I have a Phill Spector Boxset. 4 cds(i think.)including the xmas cd. a few years old. but all awsome stuff.
Have a cigar, money, and us and them are still not working.
p.s. Your blog is great!
I can’t get Cigar, Money or Us and Them. ??
thanks for stickin with me here everyone. ok, i figured out what was going on and i made the necessary repairs. i was dealing with this and a very unforgiving 3 year old who had to show me, for the 20th time, his new transformer. good times..
Man, I bet this was fun to deal with all day. ;-)
Oh yeah, thanks, by the way!
Gregor: haha, I was dealing with a very unforgiving 3 year old yesterday too (my daughter, actually), to whom I had to show the “Monsters Inc.” for the 50th time (not a joke…). Now I know the storybook by head. If she’ll be older, I’ll let her listen to my Pink Floyd collection. Hope she’ll like it better than Britney… :)
Hi Captain, I fully agree with Paul. You’ve already started your Floyd explorations in a very good place.
From my modest point of view, ‘Dark side of the moon’ & ‘Wish You Were Here’ (almost fully played at your concert) are two very good albums.
‘Relics’ complilation can show you the Floyd first ‘60 psychedelic years.
Finally The Wall’ (and also its live edition) can offer a worth listening.
These 4 - 5 records can give you a good picture of Pink Floyd career & offer you the wish to get deeper.
I just hope that they can still give you the will to share such beautiful live performances with us.
Thanks
Alberto
i heard that ALPHA BLONDY sing Wish You Were Here cover.
did you heard it ?
thks
bye
((({O.O})))
i’m another long-time floyd fan (and i’m only 36!), and for personal (and psychedelic) reasons, THE WALL and DARK SIDE OF THE MOON would be my personal faves.
i have old vinyl copies of WISH YOU WERE HERE and ANIMALS, and they’re both great.
…this version of US AND THEM you have here is frikkin a w e s o m e , by the way.
…and i’ve just downloaded your posts on tool, billy joel, bruce springsteen, dylan, sly stone, rolling stones, etc.
…good job! keep it up!!
