could she be any more captivating? i dont think so.
the other morning @ about 5 am i awoke to what i thought was an angel singing to me. its kinda crazy what you will think when you wake up abruptly from a slumber - even if it happens to be at work. the song that i woke to was joanna’s stunning “clam, crab, cockle, cowrie.” since then i have found a greater appreciation for her work and started listening in a little deeper than i had previously.
here she is performing @ bottletree in b’ham, alabama on 11.25.06. its a beautiful recording only marred by a couple glitches here and there.

Joanna Newsom’s definitely an acquired taste which I haven’t gotten yet. I think she’s got a good voice, but I think her music is maybe a little too light for me. Or maybe I haven’t been in the right mood yet. Ah well, I will take a listen.

I agree completely that Ys is more accessible, but I think after hearing Ys, her other albums become more accessible, too. Or maybe tolerable is the right word. You have to be predisposed to that style, I think, for the real beauty of her music to hit you. Sadie is a really great song, for instance, but after hearing Ys, it’s not just a song about a dog anymore, it’s the beginnings of Monkey and Bear, the roots of Emily. So Ys is an amazing album in that it not only adds nicely to, but also magnifies and enhances the rest of her discography.
Where did you get this recording? And do you have any others? I just stumbled on your site looking for some live Joanna, and this recording is practically pristine for a live show. Any idea where to look? Looks like I may be too late to vote for your band there :(
