short love with a long divorce and a couple of kids, of course

sup assholes? i have to admit that i cant stomach the last modest mouse record, so much in fact that i cant even recall its name. i liked a few tracks, but all in all it was a hot piece of shit. with that said, everything up to said record is classic imo. if i were on a desert island and could only take, say, 20 records with me, 3 or 4 of them would be of the modest mouse variety.

anyway, here they are @ the palace theatre, melbourne, australia on 4.2.08. its an fm broadcast, btw.

cant say i share the same views as you on the new album. i just saw them live last night here in Miami. they were awsome. rocked out big time. they did a 10 minute version of Tiny Cities made of ashes.

dont doubt that they were awesome. although the few times i have seen em they were very, very hit or miss. one time, inspirational, the other time, shitty, the last time, pretty damn good. still doesnt take away from the fact that the last record sucks george michael dick.

I have to agree with GS. Of course all the previous records are better, most of ‘em way better, but after giving the latest album repeated listens I grew to like it. Education, Parting of the Sensory, the opening track… pret-ty, pret-ty, pretty good.

Oh, and track 12 is Black Cadillacs, not Parting of the Sensory.

I’m still refusing to write off the new album, I still can’t figure out why I dislike it so f much. I heard a live “Fire it Up” before the album came out and it was immediately one of my favorite MM songs…until I heard the album. I’m hoping it ends up like Brighten the Corners…I was ready to write off Pavement when it came out, now it’s faithfully sitting next to me while I type this comment, waiting for my ears.

Certainly not their best album, but it’s got some good tracks. Heading to St. Louie next week to see them so hopefully it will be one of their inspired performances and not a shitty one.

i resisted the new album for a while, mainly because i was so put off by the one before it (’good news…’). man, did that album suck. but i really like ‘we were dead’ now, especially tracks like “spitting venom” and “people as places as people” — check those out if you haven’t.

it’s cool to hear them play a b-side like “here it comes” … it actually sounds a lot better than the studio version

matt, yeah i was a bit indifferent to brighten the corners initially too, but of course it eventually won me over.

i will be praying for such a performance, kh.

kiel, i love good news which if i were paying attention it would have prepared me for the last one. cause both are very similar, stylistically, but yet we were dead is just a hot mess. i can deal with a hot mess if the songs are good, but they aint.

geeze, Missed The Boat, Fly Trapped in a Jar, Little Motel….the only songs i dont like off the new one are Florida and Dashboard. then again, as a friend pointed out im more of a new school MM fan. meaning Good News and beyond.

have you listened to anything pre-good news? lonesome crowded, this is a long drive and moon and antarctica are classics, imo. definitely more kinda drug/booze fueled than the last two, which lead to more interesting lyrical content.

  11. 11 GS

umm yea. i have pretty much everything. I love Issac i think he is one of the most underratted song writers out there along side David Lowery from cracker. i just prefer the more polished sound over the older stuff. but as far as great lyrics go? love the crowded west.

  12. 12 gregor

im with ya on lowery and isaac. but of course i am the exact opposite in terms of their spit and polish. granted, the only two records that are actually polished are the last two, which one i love and one i hate. so, i can only hope that they bring it all back with the next record.
