for those interested, you can stream the new marah record here. i havent listened to it yet, but as seeing they have made a few of my favorite records of recent memory, i dont see them disappointing now. unless of course they go down the float away… alley - that record truly is a piece of shit. btw, angels of destruction out today. they play at smiths olde bar on 1.31.08.

here are two sets of peel sessions by captain beefheart. i only recently got into his work, after years of being told i should. thus far i have only gotten safe as milk and trout mask replica, but hopefully will move forward. anyone got any other recommendations?

“Lick Off My Decals Baby” is worth having as well as a live set at a place called “My Father’s Place” in Queens, NY where they play most of the unreleased “Bat Chain Puller”. Rhino Handmade put it out a few years back I think.

A definite must is the Clear Spot album. The production is cleaner and the songs are tighter and more “refined” than anything else in his catalog. As close to a pop album as he’d ever make.

Clear Spot is a must with Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) the late period gem.

DOC AT THE RADAR STATION is usually my favorite.

much thanks guys. will definitely be checking out those recommendations. i dont know why i stayed away for so long, but i am glad i am catching up with his work now.

lucky you - you’ve got some real treats awaiting you in the beefheart catalogue! my choice would be the grow fins box set and shiny beast along with mirror man, if only for the uber-psych of kandy korn - happy listening!

I discovered Beefheart in May, and quickly became obsessed. Every record really does get better every time you listen to it, and each record illuminates the others.

I would second the recommendation of Doc at the Radar Station. It was a comeback record, it was Beefheart’s response to punk (specifically on “Ashtray Heart”), and it was just a great bunch of songs played and sung with enthusiasm. Grow Fins and some dodgy-sounding live sets are available on eMusic.

Clear Spot has two of my favorite Beefheart songs: “Sun Zoom Spark” and “My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains”. And the title track was covered by Mark Lanegan. And the album was produced by Ted Templeman, who later did the first Van Halen album. I’ll shut up now.

head..going..to..explode.. jon, as it turns out i actually have radar station, and i didnt even know i did. so, it looks like i will get into that next. i have definitely heard the lanegan cover, but didnt know it twas a beefheart song. again, thanks all!

Seeing as you have “Doc” and seeing as you seem to be up real early this morning - why don’t you put that on REAL loud. It will certain set the tone for your day.

And thanks for the Doug Sahm. That has set the tone for my day.

I would steer you towards the cd that combines “Spotlight Kid” and “Clear Spot”. His voice is, in my opinion, at his strongest during this period (’71-’73) and the material is as fine as anything he ever produced. Sometimes these records get dismissed as a retreat from the more extreme albums that immediately preceded them, but they still give you plenty of what a person goes to Beefheart for.
