I would steer you towards the cd that combines “Spotlight Kid” and “Clear Spot”. His voice is, in my opinion, at his strongest during this period (’71-’73) and the material is as fine as anything he ever produced. Sometimes these records get dismissed as a retreat from the more extreme albums that immediately preceded them, but they still give you plenty of what a person goes to Beefheart for.

head..going..to..explode.. jon, as it turns out i actually have radar station, and i didnt even know i did. so, it looks like i will get into that next. i have definitely heard the lanegan cover, but didnt know it twas a beefheart song. again, thanks all!

Clear Spot has two of my favorite Beefheart songs: “Sun Zoom Spark” and “My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains”. And the title track was covered by Mark Lanegan. And the album was produced by Ted Templeman, who later did the first Van Halen album. I’ll shut up now.
