firstly, if you are in the atlanta and athens area next week my man ted leo will be at whirleyball on 8.8 and then at the 40 watt on 8.9. the show at whirleyball is an all ages and both nights raleigh’s birds of avalon will be opening the nights festivities.

check out ted’s site for upcoming tour dates

birds of avalon sound a little something like this…

bicentennial baby

set you free

their new record, bazaar bazaar, was produced and recorded by mitch easter. it can be streamed on their site.

if there’s one movie i am truly excited to see it is wes anderson’s the darjeeling limited which is out on 9.29 and stars owen wilson, jason schwartzman and adrien brody. like all anderson films before it, the darjeeling limited seems to try and find the beauty in the randomness that is the human condition. atleast, thats what i have always walked away with after experiencing his other works. here is the trailer for the darjeeling limited.

due to my complete and utter laziness, the remainder of the lyle lovett show will be posted tomorrow. in its place is richard buckner with six parts seven at turf club in st. paul on 2.28.07. thanks to dan for letting me share this show.

early concert warning for atlanta! rilo kiley are playing at the variety on sept 29 in support of their new unreleased record under the blacklight. under the blacklight is set to be released on aug 21. check the rilo kiley site for dates and pics of jenny.

if you are not in the atlanta area and are up for a roadtrip next weekend, july 25 -28, you could do much worse than wast your weekend in athens @ the 10th annual summer fest and blue ribbon ball hosted by team clermont. the blue ribbon ball, yeah its sponsored by every hipsters beverage of choice pabst, is an actual prom like event. what would a prom be without some spiked punch, an actual prom photographer, balloons and streamers, and some of the artists doing some cheesy ass covers? sounds like a grand time to me, and i might actually try to make it over there. for 2007, the sexy theme of the ball is james bond. yeah get it? 007. awesome! oh, yeah theres also a kickball game going on sometime during the weekends. i used to kick total ass at kickball. i had quite the leg on me it was pretty well known within my zipcode.

the main headliner is chicagoan and all around character, bobby conn. i never was able to get into any of his records but he is very entertaining in a live setting. shows will be going on all weekend at the 40 watt, caledonia lounge and go bar! a few of the artists taking part this year include starlight mints, summer hymns, ladybug transistor, deerhunter, bottom of the hudson, alina simone and more! heres a sampling of the artists.

pumpkin - starlight mints

going numb - tin cup prophette

spring hall convert - deerhunter

handwriting - bottom of the hudson

start swimming - summer hymns

skeleton key - a northern chorus

king for a day - bobby conn

check the team clermont blue ribbon info page for tickets, show times, etc.

the antlers is 21 year old peter silberman and the music he creates is quite glorious. its damn kids like this that make me sick. only 21 and creating stuff that is way beyond the paltry sum of his years. who the hell does he think he is? why i oughta!!!! anyway, his 5th release in the attic of the universe reminds me of sparklehorse cross bred with chin up chin up and then mated with arcade fire. its being re-released, after initially being offered for free, via fall records sometime this fall. in the mean time you can stream it on his site.

i was 9 years old in 1983 and on aug 1 of that year the replacements played at fitzgeralds in houston. my age during that time really has nothing to do with anything, just thought i would mention. this particular performance is quite an interesting listen. it sounds as if there are like 5 people in the audience cause there’s alot of interaction between the mats and the audience. this is going to be a two post affair since its 33 tracks long. the remainder will be posted later this evening.

quick note. sloan over at southern shelter, one of the best live music sites on the net, has jason’s show from the 40 watt available for download. of course he played “decoration day” and its magnificent. thats all for now.

my wife was tarded. she’s a pilot now.

ok first things first. you would think that as a guy that spends 75 percent of his day online that i would have found out about this little piece of dbt news before today. i dont blame jason for leaving the mighty dbt cause quite frankly, if i were him, i would not have been cool with playing third fiddle to patterson and mike, as awesome as they are. in other jason news, his solo record sirens of the ditch is being released on july 1o on new west records. he is streaming three tracks from said record on his myspace page.

in other related dbt news, patterson has contributed a bunch of tracks to the upcoming release, finest worksongs: athens bands play the music of rem. this collection, also featuring the likes of the modern skirts, bain mattox, and the observatory, was recorded during a marathon like concert on 9.12.06 @ the famed 40 watt club in athens. mr stipe, mike mills and peter buck even show up on a few tracks. by the way, the observatory includes most of olivia tremor control, including will hart, members of elf power and circulatory system. buy it here and proceeds go to a couple of athens based charities.

patterson hood - buring hell

the observatory - feeling gravitys pull

am i the only one who is mildly frightened by the self proclaimed queen of all media, perez hilton? he seriously looks like he is about two shades of electric blue away from being a convicted serial man rapist. i used to kind of enjoy his site but its gotten pretty fuckin ridiculous the past few months.

jesus christ look how young they look, i guess considering that they were. mills looks like he just got done pulling an all-nighter putting the finishing touches his science fair project, and michael looks like he just got done reading for the part of puck in a midsummers nights dream. i am also glad to see that bill was still rockin the mono brow back in the day. it warms my heart that jason molina is keeping the dream alive.

the boys are playing 5 sold out shows in dublin at the end of june/beginning of july. also, apparently they are going to reveal the tracklisting to their yet un-named/unrecorded new record at that time. dear lord i hope its better than the last two, which were absolute shit bombs in my opinion.

here they are playing at the 40 watt in athens during the automatic days.

wordpress 2.1 has been released, and its quite swell. unfortunately, with the new release/upgrade a few issues has reared their ugly heads. not major ones, but for some reason i cant upload and post photos, amongst other things. if anyone has upgraded to 2.1 and has some insight on how to remedy at least the photo issue, it would be greatly appreciated.

the sportsgasm i experienced yesterday has left me tired and really in need of sleep. couple that with 24 and prison break tonite, my ability to do anything constructive is nil.

here is a short rem set from 5.20.88 live at the 40 watt. they were opening for the fabulous vic chesnutt, a show i am sure was killer. speacking of vic, southern shelter, has a show of him backed by elf power at the 40 watt recorded on 12.16.06.

hey there, hows it goin? the past week has been quite the bitch. ever since we got back from chicago my little buddy has been feelin quite ill, as i had previously reported. yesterday he woke up with a bit of a fever, but he always runs hot as i am sure most kids his age do. anyway, so at about 1 o’clock the wife noticed that he was acting kind of lethargic and took his temperature. it was a 104.9! she called the doc and was told to bring him in in 2 hours, which i thought was a little weird but i am not a doctor. what the hell do i know? i was suprised that they didnt tell the bride to bring him to the emergency room. nobody really fuckin cares anymore. i think thats pretty apparent. you get receptionists that are sick of answerin the damn phone and will give you the generic “i’m not really listening” response. yeah, so, in the mean time he had a seizure which was brought on by his temperature. my wife loved that little episode. after 4 hours at the emergency roomed he was released with the diagnosis of “he has some kind of virus.” ok, thanks, doc. jesus christ, i had that one figured out! even with insurance i am sure this little adventure will cost a few hundred bucks. whatever, i suppose. damn you sweetwater 420 and your ability to open my wife’s legs with such ease!

along with david vandervelde’s awesome the moonstation house band, i have been diggin on sweeden’s loney dear’s loney, noir, as of late. having grown frustrated with belle and sebastian and artists of the like, loney dear fits the bill nicely. loney, noir is not life changing by any means, not every record has to, but it’s a great collection of not your garden variety pop songs.

i am john

rem is a band that you may have heard of, and probably like you, if you are older than 28, have grown quite disappointed with. their last two records, quite honestly were shit. luckily just about everything before said pieces of crap were brilliant. we live in a “what have you done for me lately” type of world, but i dont subscribe to that school of thought. well, at least most of the time. rem pretty much helped define and refine my own musical journey - i am sure a lot of 30-something music dorks will proclaim the same. i hope they still have a few classics left in them.
