captain’s dead guide to records for the summer of 08, part one

i dont know where you live, but down here summer sure as hell seems to have sprung. that means the hyundai’s windows are coming down with even greater frequency even when its 90 plus degrees, but even sometimes i puss out and put that air on. i cant deal with africa hot. in any event, here is round one of two of my top 20 summer records for the ‘08.

the avalanches.since i left you

i dont know much about dj records, but i do know that since i left you is one chill and inspiring piece of work. its a patchwork of cool. if ya havent heard it, you are sorely missing out.

rocket from the crypt.r.i.p.

if i were to make a movie of the debauchery that summer brings including but not limited to: random hookups, drunken brawls, driving your car off a cliff, spur of the moment road trips, going out in a blaze of glory, etc, r.i.p. would be the soundtrack.

the hold steady.separation sunday

sure stay positive is coming out just in time for summer, but frankly it just doesnt stack up to the cocksure attitude and swagger of seperation sunday.

the black crowes.the southern harmony and musical companion

granted, i am a northerner placed in the heart of dixie so i dont know shit about the southern thang. but no other record feels summer time in the hot, sweaty, complicated south quite like southern harmony.

the smoking popes.destination failure

who doesnt love poppy/punky songs about girls, self doubt and even more songs about girls? my favorite line comes from the opener “star struck one” which pretty much sets the tone for the whole record, “my heart tapped me on the shoulder and whispered in my ear “dont be a pussy all your life.” if it weren’t so fuckin catchy the shit would be depressing.

ted leo & the pharamcists.the tyranny of distance

as far as i am concerned the tyranny of distance is a solid choice for all seasons, but there’s nothing like “jamming out” to that guitar hook in “timorous me” with the windows rolled down and the person next to ya givin ya the what the fuck is he doin look.

suicide bill and the liquors.a little bit…burned

i cant think of a better way to spend 5 bucks this summer. fuck that gallon of gas and/or 3 pbrs! you like the mats? husker du? jack logan? anthemic rock via some dudes garage in rhode island? huh? this will do for the lonely drinkers what the meadowlands did for disillusioned 30 somethings.

why?.alopecia

when’s a pop record not a pop record? if i were to venture a guess it would have to be alopecia. the beats say hip hop, but the hooks say pop. i’m all confused, but whatever the hell it is it’s like a hot room that had a weed bomb go off in it.

again, another classic poppy/punk record with more hooks than buona’s got beef.

sup, sluts? so i went and got myself a new laptop. i wasnt planning on it, but the powerbook has been giving me some major issues for the past month or so that was making it increasingly more and more difficult to be mildly productive. the main issue is that it will randomly shut down any browser without notice. now, if i werent in school and having to respond to discussion questions and such it wouldnt be that big of a deal, more of an annoyance. when i spend 20 minutes typing up a post and then it all goes to shit then its an issue. i really, really wanted to get another mac, but honestly its hard justifying spending mac type cash when i can get a pc with better specs for 30-40 percent cheaper. lets be honest, at this point in the game the only major difference is the os, which is a big difference but there are workarounds. so, after reading reviews and such, i got myself this acer, which for 500 bucks is an absolute steal, 2 gigs of ram 160 gig hd, amd athlon 64×2, etc. the thing is blazing fast, even with vista loaded, which actually isnt that bad, but i still plan on dumping it as soon as i can get past this error i keep getting whilst attempting to load the ubuntu live cd. all in all, its a pretty sweet machine and even would be if it cost a grand.

there’s only a few producers i give a shit about, brian deck happens to be one of them. its not like i check out everything he touches, but when i see his name attached to a band or artist, i will definitely give em a listen. thus is the case with champaign’s or is it paris’ la scala? not sure if their eastern european/60’s pop/rock is doing it for me. the sound is big, actually it seems to big for the style. who knows what repeated listens, if there are any, will bring, but i can definitely understand if people dig em.

their brian deck produced ep, the harlequin, is out now, i think.

one record that i can tell you, in good conscience, that is fuckin killer is murder by death’s upcoming red of tooth and claw. this will definitely not be everyone’s thing, for sure, but if you dig johnny cash, the the murderous ballads of nick cave or the gospel thump of 16 horsepower then definitely check these guys and one very lovely lady out.

red of tooth and claw is out on 3.4. pre-order it here.

i have heard my fair share of afghan whigs/twilight singer boots, but this fm broadcast from brussels is one of, if not the best i have heard. my only complaint is that i wish they played the killer earlier in the set so greg’s voice was a little stronger. still a killer version though. btw, it took place @ ancienne belgique on 1.15.04.

Everyone Involved In Pizza’s Preparation, Delivery, Purchase Extremely High

AUSTIN, TX-Everyone involved in the preparation, delivery, purchase and consumption of a pizza from Tony’s New York-Style Pizzeria was thoroughly baked off his ass, it was reported Monday.

god, i cant believe its been almost 10 years since thats been published. it still makes me almost piss my pants to this day.

so, in an effort to neglect whatever duties i am trying to neglect, i am going to post one more short set tonight.  here are the afghan whigs recorded live on thanksgiving in 1997 at the howlin wolf in new orleans.  this is not the full show, but a rare promo disc released during that time.  anyone got the full show?

so i saw the transformers and it is glorious. it was everything i hoped and wished it could be. sure the acting was pretty lame, but this is not my left foot were talking bout here its the transformers. i loved that it took no more than 3 minutes before shit started blowing up and it didnt really let up until the ending credits rolled. besides the fact that i have been waiting for this to help me relive my youth for some time, i can say i havent see a better summer blockbuster in a very long time. i hear live free or die hard is pretty bad ass too - which i definitely need to see.

my listening habits are random at best, sometimes. i assume i am not the only though. lately i have found myself listening to to a whole bunch of jagjaguwar releases but most notably wilderness’ first record and the besnard lakes’ are the dark horse. actually there is nothing particularly random about those two records, but i dont remember when i started re-listening to the wilderness record, at least. usually there is some logical progression that one will follow when gravitating towards a particular record, or at least i would think so. in regards to the besnard lakes record, well i have been listening to that all year and its fantastic.

the afghan whigs, 2.26.99 live in atlanta

that is still probably my favorite album cover. i just love the look the girl is giving the little boy. something very innocent yet very adult about the situation. i suppose it fits the mood of gentlemen very appropriately.

here are the afghan whigs playing at the variety playhouse in atlanta on 2.26.99.
