i was visiting allmusic today and happened to come across their mid year best of the 07. i have heard of most of em, but most of em i havent heard. so i figured i would check out what i was missing or then again not missing. here is a sampling of some of those records.

i liked againt me!’s reinventing axl rose because it reminded me a lot of the pogues and billy bragg. now, i have not heard their new record, new wave which is produced by butch vig, but i hear its not so hot. so, in lieu of anything from that record here is a track from reinventing axl rose. you can listen to new wave on their site, i believe.

i have heard antibalas’ name tossed around in certain circles for years but really never paid em any mind. even when i heard john mcentire of tortoise was working with antibalas i still didnt do anything about it. so, this track, “ice,” off of security is my first foray into their world. its got a pretty cool horn section built into an afro-centric vibe along with some of mr mcentire’s flair for the free form jazz.

field music’s tones of town sounds like it should be popular at least in certain circles. if teenage fanclub, the late great unrest and belle and sebastian make your fashionable glasses fog up then definitely check out field music.

you can never have too many bands referencing the great lakes in their name, imo. great lakes myth society’s compass rose bouquet sounds interesting enough, on paper, but they dont have any samples from said record so i am going to with reserve judgement at this point. although, they do have a couple o’ tracks available from their first record. kinda sound as if michael penn were backed by a world music ensemble.

during december of 1997 midnight oil played 3 dates at ny’s mercury lounge. this recording is from the the last night of the stand on 12.7.97. diesel and dust, blue sky mining and earth and sun and moonare unbelievable records, imo. if i had to recommend just one it would be blue sky mining, which is definitely in my top 20 of all time.
