can i borrow another copy of your ‘hey soul classics’? (redux)

Eli “Paperboy” Reed, all of 25 now maybe?, has been tittering Boston muso ears for a few years and this year marked his debut to the rest of the country… and planet. MOJO’s digging it, Duffy’s asked him to open, MTV Italy is ciao bella on em, he played Paris last summer and he’s booking the big festivals. In other words, we aren’t seeing him in 50-capacity venues here no mo.

The Brookline native has also got a keen little backstory to go along with his sweet, soul sound — from stomping plankboards in Delta jukejoints to backing Holly Golightly to playing organ on the south side of Chicago with Mittie Collier. Before he was, like, 21. But don’t expect any Crackhouse-like shenanigans, I’ve never even seen Eli with a beer in his hand.

He’s playing Austin City Limits next month and then hits the Voodoo Festival in NOLA in October. If you’re in Australia, he’ll be there around and on New Years.

Here is a BBC set from July. RIYL: Otis, Sharon Jones, James Hunter, Jamie Lidell, the Complete Stax Singles Box Set.

sup hommies? not much going on, just trying to wrap my head around my best of the year list, since its that time. one problem i always run into is this: you have one record that is great from start to finish, then you have record two that is maybe has maybe one or two misses on it, but has like 2, 3 or 4 songs on it that are just phenomenal. now, do you go with the more solid record, or the less solid but has those songs that blow you away? thats kinda where i am at the moment.

in other news, amy winehouse aint lookin/doin so hot

one of my favorite records of the ‘04 was aloha’s post rocky/poppy here comes everyone. their sophmore release, some echoes, was a bit of a disappointment considering how much i dug their debut, but it seems like they have shaken off whatever kind of rust with their recently released light works.

body buzz off light works

your eyes off some echoes

summer away off here comes everyone

aloha myspace

aloha’s drummer, cale parks, released his illuminated manuscript last year, which flew under my radar, and from what i can tell sounds pretty cool. sounds kinda like postal service, but more 4 tracky and less ben gibbardish. he’s got a bunch of songs streaming on his myspace page.

i absolutely love athen, ga songstress madeline. more to come about her in the near future, but in the mean time check her out.
