you slithered out of your mother’s filth

femmes1.jpg

hola amigos! there’s a pretty righteous instore going on today at criminal, for those of you in the atlanta area. seminal trashy grunge party rockers, supersuckers, are playing, like i said at criminal, @ 7 pm-ish. they are part of the so-co fest thats going on tomorrow at centennial olympic park - its free and the gates open at 3 pm. the only other band that i have heard of that is performing is against me - liked their first two, the last one not so much. here’s a few supersucker tracks.

hayden’s in town and field came out a few weeks back, which i absolutely forgot about until i visited aquarium drunkard yesterday. as with a lot of records its been on the ipod, but haven’t given it much time for some bullshit reason. so, gave it a couple of spins last night and its quite good. it’s definitely not my favorite, that belongs to skyscraper national park, but it’s a nice listen. if you are a neil young fan, you will probably dig hayden.

pick up a few hayden records on eMusic. they have a 50 free download special goin on right now, btw.

i, admittedly, dont know much, outside of blister and add it up, about the violent femmes. whilst in college i used to sleep with a young lady that loved the femmes, but wouldn’t let her listen to them in my presence - yeah i used to be a major pain in the ass. so, when i stumbled across this femmes show from hamburg, germany on 2.7.84, i figured i would finally give em a chance. pretty cool stuff i must admit and for any femmes fan, which one is their best?

updated the captains dead muxtape, here.

today is national record store day, and i for one will be heading down to criminal to witness the days festivities - which should be pretty awesome. there’s two stages, indoor and outdoor, with the outdoor stage kicking off at about 1 pm. check out criminal’s site for the entire rundown, but playing the outdoor stage, the coathangers go on @ 6, anna kramer @ 7 and playing indoors are dead confederate @ 5.30 and hope foragoldensummer @ 7.30. i want to reiterate that there are plenty more bands taking part. check the link above for the shops in yr area that are participating in record store day.

patton oswalt pretty much summed up the whole record store experience with this little quip..

“The idea of, ‘The journey is the destination’ is put into action by browsing in an indie record store. Besides, a human being is a much better guide than a ‘More Like This’ link on the internet.”

top of the mid morning to y’all. for those that didnt know, alicia keys is crazy as hell. when i say crazy, i dont mean “girl, you so crazy,” i mean “damn, that bitch is crazy.”

just got done watching no country for old men. me thinks it’s a wonderful film, but the ending left me indifferent to the whole experience. it almost negated the previous 2 hours of emotional investment i put into it. anyone else feel the same?

some great shows going on over the next few days in atlanta, and sadly i will not be attending any of em. firstly, explosions in the sky are playing @ the variety on sunday. they are still my number one group that i want to see, but never have, live. i hear that they are pretty fuckin righteous, and from the recorded shows i have heard i can confirm this claim.

yasmin the light off those who tell the truth shall die,…

your hand in mine off the earth is not a cold dead place

welcome, ghosts off all of a sudden i miss everyone

then, on monday, of all forsaken days, there are three shows goin on. firstly, iron and wine and califone are at the variety. secondly, spoon and the walkmen are at center stage. thirdly, mick jones’ new gig, carbon/silicon and matt pond pa are at the loft. they are also doing an instore @ criminal at 6 pm.

what the fuck off carbon/silicon’s the last post

i’m really diggin this track by stockholmite, anna ternheim. its from her stateside debut, halfway to fivepoints. she reminds me quite a bit of when beth orton was one of my main ladies - see her first two records. check her out.

gummo, frankly, scared me. well, not scared so much as left me feeling like i was forced to recieve a filthy sanchez with no way to shower. to be fair, i do love kids, which he wrote. still, when i hear his name scenes of gummo replay in my head, which is no way to live. anyway, for his latest flick, mr lonely, he instructed his two favorite artists j spaceman and the sun city girls to send him some music based of some pics and stills that were sent their way. the result sounds quite lovely, if only judging it solely on this track. its an all instrumental record/soundtrack and if you care to know more about the premise of the movie, clicky.

freedy johnston is a helluva an artist, there’s no denying that. unfortunately, i dont think he’s a very consistent artist, either. his first three records were phenomenal, particularly can you fly which was financed by selling off the farm he had inherited from his grandfather. what makes it so great is that there is a grea sense of urgency in the songs and that he was thinkin that if something doesnt happen now, it may never. robert christgau, if you know who that is, went as far to declare it the “perfect album,” and i would almost have to second that emotion. sadly, everything since the most excellent this perfect world has been strong, lyrically, but borderline easy listening, musically. josh rouse reminds me of freedy quite a bit, not musically, but in terms of strength of his material. josh’s first few records were great, then he moved to spain and it all went to hell. i had such high hopes for him, too. oh, well.

here is mr johnston is playing @ st bede’s club in chorley, england on 3.10.02. its a real nice audience recording.

sup, gaywads? hope everyone had a loverly weeks end. mine was just fine. nothing too exciting, just lots of sierra nevada and rogue dead guy. oddly enough, no hangovers like i reported later last week.

friends of captains dead, the line of best fit have a very cool comp for download made available from the fine folks at something in construction records. the comp features the likes of loney, dear, sambassadeur, sons of noel and adrian, the leisure society, and a bunch more. clicky to visit and download.

admittedly, i get a lot of good music coming to me, but then again i get a lot of shit too. even with all the goodness that fills up my bounty, it’s pretty rare that i actually get excited about something new. this is not to take away anything from anyone else, but it tis a rare feat to touch me in that special/secret spot. i should have saw this one comin, though. when my man ben nichols name checks you in lucero’s “tears dont matter much,” proclaiming that “cory branan’s got an evil streak/and a way with words that’ll bring you to your knees,” you are going to be judged differently. i’m an absolute sucker for whiskey and cigarette ravaged voices spinning tales of love, loss and drunkness, and cory seems like a man that may have a tale or two to spin. fans of lucero, john prine, dbt, westerberg, glossary, etc will definitely love this guy.

cory is playing in atlanta @ smiths olde bar on saturday, april 19th.

i havent been able to give the honey clouds my full attention as of yet, but i am definitely diggin their sound which is very reminiscent of early pavement, velvet underground, the fall, east river pipe, etc. i love the use of the jangly guitar, it always goes far with me. will definitely be reporting on these guys in the future.

i know i am so slow, but i know there are a lot of you out there like myself. you hear about shit, people tell you to watch some youtube video, that its “hilarious” and you just never get around to it. such is the case with the dramatic gopher, which i just saw for the first time about 30 minutes ago. my brother hit it right on the head when he said this about the gopher, “he makes me smile.” so stupid its hilarious.

hey if you are in atlanta, mike doughty of soul coughing fame is playing at criminal this fine evening @ 7 pm.

leonard cohen is one of my main dudes. although i havent really talked about him up until now, my love remains unwavering. not much can really be said about him that hasnt been more eloquently stated thousands of times before. so, in lieu of doing him and his craft a grave disjustice, i’ll just leave you with this show from oslow, norway recorded on 5.1.93. its an fm broadcast, and thus probably not the entire show.
