omg! im having a rap attack!

i just got done listening to colbert’s i am america and its pretty damn funny, not surprisingly. it was awesome hearing him talk all sexy and shit about how the ladies like nothing better than a “big sack” but actually referring to “something a cartoon bandit would carry out of a bank.” the entire sex and upbringing/sports chapters were, at times, tear inducing funny. the only chapter that was kind of a bore was that on religion, but thats my own hang up cause i typically find any discussion on religion to be rather pointless. even colbert couldn’t breathe life into the tired and boring arguments. definitely recommended.

anyone going to band of horses at the park tavern on sunday and/or the echo festival? i will not be attending the echo but will be in attendance, sans wife, at the horses show. so, if you seem some guy, most likely with a white sox hat on, stop on over and say hello or go fuck yourself. its all the same to me.

i think the first swear i ever heard in a song was run dmc’s “peter piper” off raising hell. i was in junior high. so you could imagine how elated and giddy i was when i heard such profanity coming through my cheap boombox speakers. it was the greatest thing i have ever heard in my life, at the time. i didnt know shit, of course, cause all i cared about was showing off to my friends that i had a tape that the guys said shit, dick, fuck, etc. yeah, they were impressed but thats not the point. little did i know i was listening to one of the best hip hop records ever created. to this day it stands as such.

here they are playing at the apollo in 1985. its an fm broadcast so you will hear some pretty funny dj inter and outerludes. thanks to the guy on dime for unearthing this gem.

if i had the cash, i would definitely be all over this one. woot has a brand new white 30gb zune for lousy 130 bucks. go get yourself one. you know you want it or if you dont just buy your boy one. i’ll take it.

band of horses and musictoday are taking pre-orders for cease to begin and all orders come with an awesome band of horses beer koozie. who couldnt use a koozie now-a-days especially when you just need to have that road brew. they have a few t-shirt/cd/lp deals going on and you can buy tickets to their upcoming shows. sadly, no atlanta date at this time. check out the goodies here

the first time i laid eyes on jesy fortino aka tiny vipers i had to do a double take cause she looks a lot like a young lady i used to date when i was about 20/21. then the more i looked at her, the more i realized they look nothing like each other but there’s still something about her that is eerily remiscent of my ex. regardless, i am really loving this song. now do i love it on its own merit or because she reminds of someone i used to really dig. probably a little bit of the latter but it is a wonderful little song. she’s got a new record out on sub pop entitled, hands across the void.

son of a bitch, im sick of these dolphins

i am going to go out on short limb to state that i dont think any record from here on out is going to be able to stop band of horses’ cease to begin on its quest to be my record of the year. its going to take upwards of 10 or so listens for the slow burn to begin to leave its mark.

unfortunately, grandaddy suffers from the “i dont ever go out of my way to listen to em until they are shuffled through on the ipod” disease. even then, most of the time, i usually just let that single track burrow into my subconscious and not actually revisit one their records until several days later. with that said, i have been listening to just like the fambly cat
quite a bit as of late and my only one major issue with it is that its really freakin depressing. reading interviews with jason before its release didnt help matters at all either. anyone else get that feeling after a listen?

don’t you dare take the name of texas in vain

anyone going to see isbell this sunday in atlanta? i will be there with my lady enjoying a late 7 year anniversary nights out sans child. its free so there really is no good excuses not to go.

i have given cease to begin the twice over since i got home and for those hoping for a everything all the time part 2 dont go holdin your breathe. when ben said this was going to be a more southern record he wasnt kidding. i can say after two listens though that its pretty fuckin great albeit not as immediately accessible as the before mentioned record. in case you havent heard it here is “is there a ghost” from cease to begin.

is there a ghost

there was and never will be another band quite like morphine. mark sandman, r.i.p., and co. were truly a one in a million type of band. it would be almost impossible, and probably quite embarrassing, to attempt to recreate their sound, but even more difficult to try and recreate their mood. as far as i am concerned, there is no greater soundtrack to a late night/early morning, that has been filled with too many smokes and too much booze, than any morphine record. classic stuff.

here they are performing @ lehigh university on 4.26.98. its a soundboard, btw.

it’s me you old poop!

top of the labor day to you all! ah, its nice to have days off, or at least any consecutive amount days greater than 2. we just got back from camping for the evening, which was cool but really you need more than a day to get in the swing of camping. still nice to do some fishing and commiserate with the locals.

for those that have heard it, what do you all think of the band of horses song? its really not all what i expected but i love its simplicity.

i dont think there had ever been a more anticipated release, at the time, than the release of pearl jam’s vs. i was going to western illinois university back in 93 and the whole campus, or everyone i talked to, was abuzz about its release. the local record shop, rockin robins, did a midnight sale and it seemed like half the campus was there. it was damn cold night in macomb, illinoise but that didnt harsh the mood that was quickly turning into complete pandemonium the closer midnight came. i was probably 20th in line and when i stepped foot into rockin robins i could barely hold in my excitement. i might have had wood, but thats between you and me. once the monies and product was exchanged i think i actually ran back to my dorm. which is quite rare for me cause i only run when chased, which is really never. i think i eventually got home around 1 am and i was up to at least 5 am taking it all in. to this day, i dont think any album has hit me has hard on initial listen as vs did.

here are the men of pearl jam playing in madrid, spain on 6.9.07 @ festimand sur. its an fm broadcast so you will hear the station djs from time to time.

you know the message you’re sending out to the world with these sweatpants?

photo possibly taken by ann marie young

man, i cant believe its almost september. that means its gettin to be that time. the time to start flushing out your end of the year best of lists. yeah i know theres still 4 months left but what else is supposedly coming out the remainder of the year besides the new band of horses, malkmus and chinese democracy?! i know theres more than that, but i am seriously drawing a blank. with that said, i think my top 3 favorites of the year thus far are isbell’s sirens of the ditch, iron and wine’s the shepherds dog and of montreal’s hissing fauna.. although ga ga ga ga ga, chris whitley and jeff lang’s dislocation blues and the besnard lakes are the dark horse are knockin on the door. what am i missing and what are you guys lovin this year?

if you have not heard whitley and jeff lang’s dislocation blues, please go get it now. their version of dylan’s “changing of the guard” is absolutely heart wrenching and alone worth the price of admission.

lastly, and probably most importantly. have you heard about this kid, eric volz, who is wrongly imprisoned in nicaragua? the story is so fucked up, it almost seems like a movie plot, i cant even fathom what he is going through right now. please visit the site that was set up and read what has happened to him. thanks to drew for bringing this to my attention!
