only after disaster can we be resurrected

one thing i have learned in my scant 34 years here on this rock is that the minute you think you have shit figured or planned out thats when reality slaps ya upside the head and goes “hey not so fast there buddy.” case in point(s) took the car to tires plus for an oil change and inspection, and of fuckin course they come back with i need this and need that. do i have the cash for the this and that? no… luckily they said it could wait a while. that very afternoon i was pulling into my subdivision and i hear a clacking coming from one of my tires and wouldnt you know it, theres a god damn nail in one of em. lovely… thats not even the most annoying happening, but i’ll just stop there and just say the last 72 hours has pretty much busted our budget for this move. rock n roll!!!!!!! hate being such a fuckin buzz kill, but damn if the past 8 months been a son of a bitch.

dave fischoff aka spoolwork has thrown his hat into the radiohead remix challenge with his retooling of the track reckoner off in rainbows. i was not a fan of rainbows, so i am not super familiar with “reckoner” but i can only assume its better than the original. vote for it here.

can i borrow another copy of your ‘hey soul classics’? (redux)

Eli “Paperboy” Reed, all of 25 now maybe?, has been tittering Boston muso ears for a few years and this year marked his debut to the rest of the country… and planet. MOJO’s digging it, Duffy’s asked him to open, MTV Italy is ciao bella on em, he played Paris last summer and he’s booking the big festivals. In other words, we aren’t seeing him in 50-capacity venues here no mo.

The Brookline native has also got a keen little backstory to go along with his sweet, soul sound — from stomping plankboards in Delta jukejoints to backing Holly Golightly to playing organ on the south side of Chicago with Mittie Collier. Before he was, like, 21. But don’t expect any Crackhouse-like shenanigans, I’ve never even seen Eli with a beer in his hand.

He’s playing Austin City Limits next month and then hits the Voodoo Festival in NOLA in October. If you’re in Australia, he’ll be there around and on New Years.

Here is a BBC set from July. RIYL: Otis, Sharon Jones, James Hunter, Jamie Lidell, the Complete Stax Singles Box Set.

hola, gaywads! hope everyone is enjoying their respective weekends. my 4 days off are coming to an abrupt end, with another 11 day stretch ahead of me. yeah.. hey mr. drunkard has the new my morning jacket “evil urges” available for your listening/downloading pleasure, here. i was, honestly, unimpressed with my first go around with it, but after a few more listens i am definitely diggin it - sounds almost like mmj fronted by prince. admittedly, i am still getting used to the more groove-centric mmj, as z did nothing for me the first 20 or so listens.

i am really liking this bowerbirds record, hymns for a dark horse. they remind me of early iron and wine, andrew bird and a more cohesive devendra banhart. check em out!

i am surprised i never heard of the pedaljets during their “hey day” of the late 80’s - they called it quits in 1990. they apparently opened for the likes of the replacements, husker du, flaming lips, meat puppets, etc and even had a video on heavy rotation on the late, great mtv classic 120 minutes. i think that actually still runs, but i am sure its as inconsequential as it has been for the last 15+ years. anyway, when their self-titled record was released back in 89, the band was none to happy with its production. fastforward, 17 years and they band got back together and decided to re-do the record with the original masters. they even re-recruited my man archer prewitt(sea and cake, the coctails) to do the cover artwork - he did the original cover art back in 89. it’s being re-released via oxblood on 5.6.

so, as of late i have been messing around with photography. i have always been really inspired by photos and i wanted to try my hand at it. i had some extra amazon money to spend so i went and purchased this camera. for those too lazy or dont care enough to click on that link, its a panasonic dmc lz7, 7.2 mp with 6x optical zoom. granted its not the top of the line but the specs are great and i figured i can take at least good if not great pics with it. since i know very little about the world of photography - see taking good photos - i was hoping one of you fine readers could point me in the right direction as i attempt to venture forth. any good sites to visit with tips and stuff?

we’re gettin the band back together

radiohead.jpg

i like radiohead quite a bit, but i never got why people go apeshit over them. they remind me of a sitcom that i never go out of my way to watch, but when i do catch it, i enjoy it quite a bit. my one problem with them is that the music is too cold for me to make an emotional connection. this is not to say i need to make these kind of connections with every band, but with a band i like this much, i wish it were possible. the only record i really dont dig all the much is the much beloved and highly overrated, ok computer. me thinks hail to the thief or the bends are my favorite radiohead records, although i dig kid a quite a bit. i love the dreamy pop of the bends, especially “fake plastic trees,” and “high and dry.” i have yet to hear any of their new stuff, but i am sure it will be gobbled up, even by yours truly.
