contest alert! contest alert! in conjunction with the recent, well 11.20.07, release of nirvana’s unplugged on dvd i got a copy to give away. so all you gots to do is leave a comment with your favorite movie quote that i may use for a later post headline. the contest will end on monday.

if it were the end of the world, i know i would be taking atlanta’s ben trickey’s pretty little wave with me. hell, even if such a scenario never plays out, i’m still holding it close just in case. trickey creates a pre-apocalyptic folk record that is akin to the calm before the inevitable shit storm. these climatic changes, at least in me, always instill a sense of dread and uneasiness and pretty little wave leaves you with the same kind of feelings. this is not a record that by the end you think every thing’s going to be ok, but it doesn’t leave you bummed out either, just kind of indifferent. which can be directly attributed to the mixed signals trickey and his band, the east atlanta honky tonk choir, give off over the course of the seven tracks that make up pretty little wave. a brief glimmer of hope does arise when he sits down at the piano for the last track “tangle” only to end abruptly, leaving the listener with no sense of closure as the last key is hit and the record ends. pretty fuckin awesome stuff.

i dont know anything about caroline, but i do know i dig this song, which happens to be a remix of her song “all i need.” usually the glitchy, beeps and blips arent my thing, but there is something particularly intoxicating about her voice and the way it mingles in with the music. this track and nine others can be found on her murmurs mixes record. its only available through itunes and was released on tuesday, 1.8.08.

indiana! holy smoke! i am so pleased that you are not dead!

if i ever mention eating at crystals again please just go ahead and kick me in the nuts and then feed me rancid milk cause this is the second time in 4 months that i have become violently ill after eating some of that greasy goodness. after attending the isbell show at the park tavern last evening the wife and i thought it would be a swell idea to pick some up. they were so freakin good going down, comin back up not so much. so please dont let me do that ever again no matter how great of an idea it sounds like at the time.

if thou are in the atlanta area you may want to spend the night and help ben trickey celebrate the release of his newest record. the show is only 5 bucks and the record is only 7 bucks. great music, great venue and cheap beer, what else could one wish for? check out his myspace page for 3 new tracks. in the meantime here are some older ben trickey gems.

for those of you’s across the pond, one of my favorite master of ceremonies, el-p or el producto, is bringing his gift of gab to your neck of the woods. i have read quite a bit how a lot of people in the hip hop community and its legions of fans dont really dig el-p and his hip hop stylings. its all quite confusing to me cause here is an artist pushing the boundaries, blurring lines, breathing life into an already stale genre and releasing some of the best records out there, hip hop or not. maybe its a race thing, i dont know. his most recent, ill sleep when youre dead is truly a phenomenal piece of work is highly recommended. check his myspace page for dates.

i used to know the drummer for chicago’s frisbie and had the chance to see em a couple of times at the hideout. each time i saw em i walked away really wanting to dig their sound but they just wouldnt take. that was more than a few years ago. so, when i got an email annoucing their newest release, new debut, i was mildy excited to see what they were up to. well, its more or less the same in the frisbie world and while its not a bad thing its just not my thing. this is weird cause i love power pop as much as the next dork, but they are just a little too sugary for my liking. the title track does have a pretty cool styx rockin the paradise era like chorus.

i heard you was dead!

you couldnt have asked for a better lineup last night at the earl and in the end it was one of the best shows i have ever been witness to. opener and fellow atlantian, ben trickey’s 45 minute set was stunning in its simplicity. just a man, a guitar and a handful of lovely songs. sadly, ben was only special to the atlanta show, but i definitely cant recommend him enough. justin earle was a huge surprise. not that i expected him to suck, cause i have listened to yuma and its quite good, but i was surprised how engaging he was/is. of course the strength of his set was his songs, which take on new life in a live setting. if yuma was filled with the same life as his live set it would be a totally different recording. the there was the star of the evening, jason isbell backed by his band the 400 unit. not surprisingly he was awesome. my only disappointment was that he failed to play a couple of songs i was really wanting to hear, “decoration day” and “shotgun wedding” to be exact. oh well, other than those two missteps the night was close to perfect. he did bless the crowd with version’s of thin lizzy’s “jailbreak” and the talking heads “psycho killer” which were very cool. he played for just over 2 hours but ended very abruptly with a sonic youth inspired type of guitar feedback freakout. he is touring through the end of august, but only for the next 10 days or so with justin earle but he hooks up with the men of centro-matic in mid august. check his site for upcoming tourdates - the next date is tomorrow in raleigh @ hideaway bbq.

“in a razor town” my favorite track off sirens of the ditch

i have yet to listen to ann arborite, chris bathgate’s debut a cork tale wake but these two tracks are freakin great. very reminiscent of the more haunting richard buckner stuff that can be found on his classic the hill. fans of buckner, okkervil river, and maybe even beruit should take notice for sure.

my body is a roadmap of pain

i havent seen the peter jackson/mike j. fox tour de force, the frighteners, in well probably since it was released all the way back in 96. having seen dead alive recently there are definitely a lot stylistic qualities between the two. having not seen the frighteners in so long i must contend that it has held up pretty well.

so, jason isbell plays the 40 watt tomorrow evening and then two shows in atlanta on tuesday - the first at 7 @ criminal then the full fledged show @ the earl at 9. anyone going to either the in store or the earl? needless to say i am super excited not only for seeing jason but seeing justin townes earle, son of steve earle, as well. his 07 ep, yuma, is pretty damn solid and considering his pedigree it definitely makes one wish for a future as strong has his fathers.

also on the bill is atlantian ben trickey who very well could be the sbd act of the evening - if you dont know what sbd stands for ask any 12 year old or google it. after listening to his stuff i can definitely say i am impressed with his minimalistic bedroom like recordings. there’s definitely a early will oldham circa palace brothers vibe happening, maybe its just the recordings, but either way i dig him.

oh yeah, jason’s sirens of the ditch comes out on tuesday. so, pick it up. as it stands today, sirens is definitely in my top 3 of the year, and it wouldnt surprise me if it ended up being number one.

i am sure the ladybirds have been getting mass amounts of play around the interweb, cause they just seem like they should. i am still a bit confused by em, to be honest. this track “the brown and red divide” is pretty cool but i dont know how they would fair over an entire record. its like listening to a digitized cyndi lauper in a classic nintendo game.
