the everybodyfields vs huey lewis and the news

happy labor day fellow americans. hopefully everyone everyone from the gulf coast is outta harms way. been watching coverage all morning and so far it seems as if everything is holding, but the worst is yet to come, supposedly.

captains dead favorites, the everybodyfields performed an impromptu and a capella version of the everly brothers’ “let it be me” for paste during their recent stop over in atlanta. a show i was not able to attend…. click here to check it out.

in case you missed these gems the first 10 times i posted em.

everything is okay

dont turn around

i will not deny my roots. therefore, i must contend that for the longest time, at least until i was 12, i worshipped huey lewis and the news’ picture this and sports. i believe i listened to em so much that i bought multiple copies of the cassettes, but of course had to upgrade to cd. “i want a new drug” was the first and oly song my mother ever barred me from listening to - that banning only lasted about a day or so. they still hold an odd place in my ever blackening heart.

here they are performing in the wttw studios, thats in chicago, in 1994. there are some edits that were probably done for commercial breaks and such.

ed mcmahon explains his mortgage mess

sup y’all? friends of captains dead and all around good blokes the line of best fit has a bunch of cool shit for your reading and listening pleasure. bon iver interview here, monthly mixtape feat. the likes of the silver jews, wye oak, bodies of water, etc here and a southern records sampler here.

put sept 9th on your calendars cause calexico is back with a new record entitled, carried to dust. i got no other info other than the release date and that the album includes sam beam, douglas mccombs, and pieta brown. oh yeah, and here’s the album art, which in typical calexico fashion is pretty damn great. that would make a pretty cool tattoo, me thinks. wanna read the press release as put out by touch and go? read it here.

speaking of touch and go, but not really, quarterstick is putting out a record by oklahoma city inhabitants, the uglysuits(pic’d above) on 8.19. i am definitely diggin the noise they are making. its poppy for sure, but there may be a slight psychedelia vibe going on too. hard to judge by one track but still some pretty cool stuff. check em out!

if you are going to see iron and wine in minneapolis, iowa city, st. louis or columbus these lads will be opening up. they play @ the hideout on the 14th.

there’s nothing hugely exciting about anthem in, but i’ll be damned if i didnt hit repeat over and over again after each listen of ”down.” there’s just something about that song in particular that warrants repeated listens or causes a brief bout with an obsessive compulsive disorder. if ya dig death cab, pinback, the shins or maybe even the likes of beulah, you may find anthem in quite appealing.

their self titled debut is out on 6.24 via quiet/loud records.

some time between 1990 and 1993 the men of urge overkill figured out the ingredients to graduate from making decent to good records, to making classic rock records - see saturation and enter the dragon. i got into them during the supersonic storybook days, and at very least, thought it was a pretty good record. still not something i listened to a hell of a lot but pulled it out from time to time primarily to listen to “the kids are insane” and “the candidate.” when saturation was released i was completely blown away. it was a huge record, just waiting to be blasted through the hallowed halls of your local arena. where saturation sounds like a band on the verge of superstardom, enter the dragon are the sounds of a band thats road and life weary, having barely made it through fully intact. which may have been a bit prophetic considering that was 13 years ago and there’s no new urge record in sight.

here they are at the metro in june of 93. its a fm broadcast, btw.

i dont believe i have ever heard heard a les savy fav song and i am not sure why. have always heard great things about em, but we have yet to meet up until now. are they really indie rock’s best live band? i only ask cause that’s what the press release proclaims. anyway, the only real reason i even ventured forward was cause attached to said email/press release was a cover of superchunk’s “precision auto,” which i of course i had to check out. i can say that it sounds like “precision auto” but nothing special to be honest. i digress, on 4.29 les savy fav is releasing a digital only copy of their new years eve show from the bowery which they have entitled after the ball drops. they do a bunch of cool covers, i must admit, which include pixies’ “debaser,” nirvana’s “sliver,” misfit’s “astro zombies,” and a couple more. should be worth checkin out, even for a non fan like myself. here be a few live performances from the archives. for you fans out there where would one start with in regards to the les savy fav catalogue?

i was at this pearl jam show which took place at the metro all the way back on 3.28.92. i was but a wee lad, all of 18, and was under the influence of mushrooms, which just so happened to be my first time indulging in such an activity. i wasn’t that fond of it, to be honest, and i only took shrooms one other time. i really didnt want to the second time but it was a matter of getting laid or going home alone - i chose the former. what i remember of that night is that we walked from what used to be the damen, on the corner of damen and roscoe, to her apartment on lake and around ashland - which is a pretty decent walk @ 3 am especially 12 years ago when some of those areas of chicago weren’t what they are today. forgive my reminiscing, this is the xrt broadcast of said show, but not the entire show.

sup playas? i forgot to mention that the contest for the rhino reissue of its a shame about ray double disc/dvd ends on friday @ midnight, eastern time. if you dont know what i am talking bout, see the post below.

i still feel pretty bad about not diggin sky blue sky at all, but am hoping for some kind of awakening in a year or two or at very least be able to make it through the entire record. which, at this point, i cannot say in good conscience i can do. i know its a good to possibly great record, but its missing something that all other wilco records have, thats having songs that stick to my bones. “hate it here” comes the closest, but really comes nowhere near the strongest material on all their previous records.

here are the men of wilco on 2.18.08 @ the riv, which i believe is night two of their recent stand. thanks to william for the recording.
