blitzen trapper’s furr

i was a big fan of blitzen trapper’s last record, wild mountain nation, and as it turns out i am becoming an even bigger fan of their upcoming release, furr. this one is definitely more focused, maybe due in part to their recent sub pop signing who knows, but it is definitely welcomed. they are musically all over the map, ranging from 90’s lo-fi, pyche-folk, alt-country, and a bunch of other dashes i cant think of at the moment. regardless of their psychitzophrenic nature nothing on furr seems out of place, though their may be a few what the fuck moments sprinkled throughout but they only add to the records many charms. furr is out on the 23rd of september.

make sure you check out their daytrotter session from late last year.

i can’t see my forehead

apparently i dont pay attention. cause you know that 49 cents you spent purchasing westy’s 49:00? yeah, well there isnt a full 49 minutes on said record! there are only 43 minutes and 55 seconds worth of music. son of a bitch, we been had! in any event, you can purchase the remaining 5 minutes and 5 seconds @ tunecore, for either a buck or $5.05, the choice is yours.

no one will ever mistaken me for a music critic, and thats fine. quite frankly there are way too many people, spending way too much time, writing up reviews/diatribes that in the end, end up saying close to nothing that resembles any fucking sense. one guy’s words i do quite enjoy is sean moeller from daytrotter and his write up on horse feathers only deepens my appreciation. he writes like he’s got heart and soul and not just out to prove that he can string a bunch of hyperbole’s and dictionary inducing words together. of justin ringles’ songwriting he had this to say:

He writes words as splendidly obtuse and heartwarming as Sam Beam, but makes almost all of them into the final conversation between Charlotte and Bob Harris at the end of Sophia Coppola’s “Lost In Translation,” in the thoroughfare in Tokyo, where understandable phrases melt into a louder clatter and yet tiny strains of the audible fall just short, leaving a mark of savory suspense as a memento.

after listening to a few tracks, both from a daytrotter session, and the first single from their upcoming killrockstars debut, house with no home sean’s choice of reference points are quite on the mark. i, nor do i think anyone else could have summed em better.

a person remains conscious for eight seconds after being decapitated

hola, dickweeds! couple o’ things. firstly, those fucktards tried to do me in again yesterday but the fine folks @ imountain were quick to punch and thwarted their asshatery before it got too serious. so here’s the bad news, there’s going to be some necessary changes coming in the near future. while thats not necessarily bad, what is going to be a fuckin bitch is that we are going to have to say goodbye to anything older than a month or so. if there is anything you have been meaning to get, get it now. i am slowly downloading everything off my server so there is a good possibility i will be able to take requests for reposts. thats that bullshit, secondly, it looks as if i will be indeed moving to columbia, sc. i have yet to hear it officially but my sources tell me that i should get that word soon, maybe today. there’s two things i hate, well there’s actually a lot of shit, but to keep it on topic the two things i loathe are packing and moving. good times ahead…

head on over, if you havent already, to daytrotter and bask in the glory that is an everybodyfields sessions. jill’s voice sounds even lovelier live than on record, which i didnt think would be possible.

i’m not a huge fan of mashup stuff, but i think the hood internet’s melding of the 85 bears’ superbowl shuffle, wilco’s “jesus etc” and some kanye west track is pretty damn good/funny. check it!

btw, calexico’s carried to dust is so, so excellent. the production is much like iron and wine’s the shepherds dog, and while it is still very much a calexico sounding record there are large traces of los lobo’s evil but funkier cousin, the latin playboys, to be heard. awesome! definitely going to be a contender for record o’ the year, 08.

two silver trees

here’s a lovely pj harvey show from big day out in australia back in ‘01. did anyone get into her last record, white chalk - i believe it is called? i may have listened to it once, or maybe twice but i know it didnt grab me at all. should i even go back and revisit it?

you wanna go to sxsw but dont have tix, dont have cash, dont have a place to stay? if you answer no to at least one of em then your prayers may have been answered. the men of lucero and record store today are running a contest that the grand prize winner will get a two night stay in a hotel, 4 vip tix, $200 and a shitload of other stuff. visit this here page for more info.

caspian’s the four trees came out last year, but i just recently decided to check it out. if you were feeling a little underwhelmed by the last explosions in the sky record, then the four trees will treat you kindly. very cool stuff.

speaking of records i am totally diggin, dead meadow’s old growth is more than filling my insatiable hunger for soundtracks to long, hazy, drunken summer days. old growth is not as bombastic as their previous stuff, but is more apt to create an atmosphere rather than smashing one into pieces. heres a couple off old growth.

hey, if anyone is looking for hosting, surpass hosting has a year of hosting for a buck. i cannot vouch for them in any way, but for a buck i figured someone may have the need. i’ve read some reviews and they seem to be decent to pretty good, but proceed at your own risk. oh, today is the last day for the deal.

kinda late to the mobius band party, but still glad i made it. granted, havent heard the whole record but these two glitchy synth pop tracks are pretty damn infectious. now, i am not too sure about their version of neil’s “razor love” but i guess i am willing to look past it, and it may grow on me. that cover is just one of six other covers available on a free valentines day inspired ep. which can be found here. they also took part in a daytrotter session over here.

after a scant 3 or 4 listens, i can already tell i may fall hard for the men of birmingham, alabama’s 13ghosts. they sound like a front porch gathering of mark linkous(sparklehorse), califone and self-inflicted aerial nostalgia era gbv somewhere in the heart of the deep south. check em out..

their new record, the strangest colored lights, is out on 3.18 on skybucket records.

i dont know who this guy(s) is but i kinda dig it. this guy(s) goes under the moniker of boys noize, and while dj stuff isnt typically my thing, i find this set @ i love techno 2007 to be particularly interesting or at very least a nice change of pace from my normal listening regimen.

its one file @ about 80 megs, just to let you know.

sup peoples? after listening to jens for the past few days, i have finally come to a realization on who he sounds like. barry manilow! or atleast a “i write the songs,” and “mandy” era manilow. this is no apparent than on “a postcard to nina” where the horns come in. am i the only one that hears this? it may be my massive exposure to manilow as a child kicking in.

for those interested, i reposted a cool grant lee buffalo show from germany over here.

this real life simpsons house is super freakin creepy. it has “bad things go on in here” written all over it.

im always amazed at the shit that passes under my radar. the latest, in a depressingly long list, is william eilliot whitmore and jenny hoysten’s collaboration, the hallways of always. yeah, it came out in november of 06. they got a cool cash/carter vibe goin on a few of the tracks, and is a nice departure from whitmore’s usual type of stuff. check it!

i am kinda diggin this track by the choir practice. they are fronted by coco culbertson who in her past was part of the gay, the ac newman band and briefly in the tennessee twin. as their name implies they really bring the choir, but not in a polyphonic kinda way. more subdued and not all up in your face with it.

for those of you having issues downloading from here, i am assuming that the majority of you are using safari? for some reason captains dead doesnt like safari much and doesnt play nice. any other browswer that runs on a mac, of any kind, should work. i have tested opera, flock, firefox and ie and they all work fine. all apologies, but i have no idea how to fix it. you really shouldnt be using safari anyway. i find that opera and flock actually work the best. at least on my mac.

tomorrow evening, the 12th, in atlanta nickel creek and bela fleck play at the variety and caribou play at the earl. i have yet to hear caribou’s latest, andorra, but i was a pretty big fan of up in flames. dont know why i havent gotten around to listening to andorra yet? anyone dig it, hate it, meh? here is the first single.

daytrotter has an interview with dan didier and davey von bohlen, maritime, regarding their newest, and best, record, heresy and the hotel choir. they, of course, offer up a few daytrotter session exclusives.

for some reason, i kinda like chicago’s walter meego. there’s something oddly endearing about em that pushes aside my normal aversion to their kind of beats driven, dance rock type thing. i mean, i really really dislike, typically, that sort of shit. alas, even my typical hard line stance against stuff can be swayed, from time to time.

allow me to get sidetracked for a second. from walter meego’s site i ventured over to clay hauck’s everyone is famous site. he takes great photos and i have been a fan for a while, but jesus christ, after perusing through a lot of his nightlife pics i started to feel really, really feel. not so much old as in my mindset, but old in the fact that i cant believe how little shit has changed in terms of getting fucked up. i know thats really vague, but if you are 30 or older and dont participate, on a regular basis, in the activities of your early - mid 20’s go take a look at everyone is famous and you may get a sense of what i speak. i got really tired just looking through the pics, but tried to envision myself still in that world. my liver would never, ever had made it.

random question: do raves still exist? those pics kinda remind of the early 90’s raves, only much, much whiter.

another side note, that wont make any difference to anyone. my wife used to to be the sous chef/chef at darkroom for 3 years. darkroom is featured prominently throughout everyone is famous. if you ever go to darkroom tell arunas, or rooney as i call him, i sent you. might get you a free beer or drink.

oh, yeah here are two walter meego tracks.

walter meego’s got a few performances comin up. namely, two shows on the 20th in nyc. the first is harp’s dance party at the cake shop and then brooklyn vegan’s late night part at club 205. they play in chicago at sub t on the 24th.

athens’ ham 1 is like shootin the shit, drinkin some beers, and playing some epic games of dominos with your friends on a thursday evening. there’s nothing particularly exciting about it, but its nice, relaxing and comfortable. ham 1 is fronted by athens schoolteacher and songwriter, jim willingham, backed up by eric harris, olivia tremor control, on drums as well as contributions from the lovely liz durrett, kris barratt of the capes and pete erchick also of olivia tremor control. so, he’s got a virtual cornucopia of awesome athenites at his disposal. he doesnt let their individual talents go to waste. if you dig fellow athenites vic chesnutt and jack logan or even the late great link wray then ham 1 will definitely put you in the mood for those late night escapades.

their new self titled record is out now. me thinks.

now, i like radiohead as much as the next guy, but i never really bought into the hype. i like em for what they are, a great rock band. nothing more, nothing less. with that said, in rainbows kinda blows. this is after only a few listens, but thus far not diggin it too much. i know i am not the only one that is mildly if not strongly disappointed.

here they are playing some acoustic numbers at electric lady studios 4.06.03
