king tuff vs the weight

honestly, i was taken a back by king tuff’s was dead on my first listen. not in a good way, either. listening to it again, and again, and again as i have, i am not sure what the fuck my problem was, initially. cause you are gonna be hard pressed to run across a better garage rock inspired record this year. i dont know how many garage rock bands are out there, i’m sure a gross amount, but i will say that this will definitely rank in my top 10 or at very least top 15 releases of the 08 regardless of whatever lame label i put on em. king tuff is fronted by kyle thomas, who i believe fronts the soon to be legendary and j mascis side project, witch. just to let ya know…

was dead is out now i believe on colonel records

sup playas? for those of you lucky tards heading to sxsw this year you may want to check out this site do512. the sites got a shitload of helpful sxsw info including the ability to input in the shows you want to see and then send the schedule to your cell. i had all good intentions of going this year, but alas with the wee child due shortly, its just not economically feasible. damn kids!!!

i am going to go out on a limb and proclaim urge overkill’s “sister havana” one of, if not the greatest pop/rock song ever put to tape. i will hear no arguments on the subject!

admittedly, i dont typically read the press releases that usually accompany the promos i am sent. i dont like having to deal with too many words strung together to form those things called coherent sentences. i just really dont have the time. those 45 seconds add up to close to wasting more than 2 minutes a day. on what reading? please! i digress, last week i received a pretty unassuming cd in a clear vinyl case w/ an accompanying release. unfortunately, i am so backlogged, the cd was just gonna go into the “ill get to it, sometime” pile. that was until i saw the words “witch” scrawled out on the release that was about to hit the circular file. psyched, i was. i have been waiting, hoping, yearning for a new witch record. for those not in the know, witch features j mascis, returning to drums, w/ long time friend dave sweetapple along with members of feathers, asa irons and kyle thomas. their debut is a fuzzed out trip of epic proportions. their newest, paralyzed is due out on 3.18, and its much in the vein of their debut, albeit a little more focused and a little less sabbathy, but now features more swirling guitar. fans of either mascis and/or stoner-like rock like kyuss, etc will definitely dig this.

witch plays a bunch of shows, 4 or 5 at last count, during sxsw.

yip yip is a nightmare wrapped in a dream, or maybe its the other way around. either way, i have been listening to their newest, two kings of the same kingdom, for about a week now and it has invaded my damn sleep. yip yip is akin to playing pitfall, only with a better soundtrack, for 10 hours. its so damn contagious that it seeps into your brains like “ca-stanza” - seinfeld reference. my only problem with this kinda stuff is that its so impersonal/cold that have hard time investing too much of myself. impersonal or not, this shit is pretty damn fun and it doesnt need to be any more than that.

in other yip yip news, they will be covering nirvana’s “very ape” on a split 7 inch coming some time in man. so, be on the lookout for that.

btw, people

if you dig m.i.a., and really who doesnt, then you may just dig this boys remix redone by dj doc rok.

boys remix by doc rock feat ludacris and chamillionaire

i have only checked out this track by new york’s young lords, but when faced with listening to the entire record, me thinks that i will either really dig em or find em quite affected. they have that stone/faces bratty quality that can be a blessing or a curse. as of right now, i dig em. their debut is coming out this summer.

they are playing at sxsw. check em out, and report back.

who is the keeper of the katra?

whoa! sorry about that. i got a major case of the lazies yesterday, or if i were in college or worked at a brokerage firm i would have called it the tieoneon flu. sadly, i didnt get to see warm in the wake on saturday evening. i was able to catch a pretty cool band outta chapel hill, nc called twilighter and a fairly decent band called the eyes. twilighter take a page right outta yankee hotel foxtrot era wilco and throw in a lot of son volt along the way. i would definitely check em out if they come to your area.

in case you slept through the 8o’s, 90’s, this decade or maybe you just dont care, but you then probably arent acquainted with probably the coolest man in rock n roll, mr mike watt. you know the man behind two iconic bands, minutemen and fIREHOSE. anyway, i have been diggin on his 94 solo record ball-hog or tugboat over the past few days. up until last thursday i hadn’t listened to it in probably 8 years. if you arent familiar with ball-hog it features a venerable who’s who of 90’s indie/college rock, including j mascis, thurston moore, eddie vedder, evan dando, frank black, dave pirner, etc. its pretty bad ass and i definitely recommend seeking it out.

oh where does the time go, i ask you? it seems like only yesterday i was feeling up a high school sweetheart of mine, for the first time, on bench near her lake house. that same trip was featured my first foray into the world/work of j mascis and dinosaur jr. my purchases for that fateful trip was both green mind and bug, on tape. i think i listened to “freak scene” at least 50 times during that 3 hour trip - it was play, rewind, play, rewind, etc. i didnt even listen to green mind until the trip back. i was so enthralled with that damn guitar sound, i couldnt pull myself away from it. still to this day i still get all ga-ga when i hear that opening riff of “freak scene.”

of course you already know that they got a new record coming out next week called beyond. you also know that its the original dino jr lineup too, which of course is awesome.
