wilderness

if you are familiar with baltimore’s wilderness you are probably in one of two camps, one being you cant stand em, the other being you think they’re pretty fuckin awesome. i fall into the latter camp. they aren’t a band that creates music that people are going to be on the fence about cause quite frankly they can be a hard pill to swallow. for those that dig em, they have a new record comin out on jagjaguwar on 11.4 entitled (k)no(w)here. here’s the first single…

so, its official the captains dead household will be a little more hormonal come may. as my wife is looking to pop out a girl. oy! so, kids that are one, two, three or 24 are going to possibly be nailing my daughter in 18 years. awesome!

for those that missed it the first time around, i reposted the sea and cake live at dead pigeon over here. for those keeping score, i recently started broadcaster house for stuff i didnt feel like writing about. well, i am also going to use that for reposts and keep thanks for nothin as my dumping ground of random shit.

anyway, i finally got around to checking out the new black mountain tracks that have been floating around the intertubes, and needless to say i am very psyched for the new record. their debut was in my top 5 from whatever the hell year it was released. here’s the first release, “tyrants,” an 8 minute juggernaut.

here’s something you dont, or at least i dont, come across every day. an actual live recording of magnetic fields, and a nice one to boot. i have been a huge magnetic fields fan since holiday. now, dont confuse my magnetic fields fanboy status as being one that encompasses all things stephin merritt. cause quite frankly, most of everything else, not including the first 6ths record, merritt has released has left me feeling empty and sad. this is not his fault, by any means, but a lot of it is just too over the top show tuney for my liking. distortion is being released on 1.18.08 on nonesuch. sign up for the house of tomorrow mailing list for up to date info on all things merritt.

here he is as the magnetic fields playing at cats cradle during merge’s 5th anniversary party celebration on 7.29.94. much love to mrpember for the taping!

so i saw the transformers and it is glorious. it was everything i hoped and wished it could be. sure the acting was pretty lame, but this is not my left foot were talking bout here its the transformers. i loved that it took no more than 3 minutes before shit started blowing up and it didnt really let up until the ending credits rolled. besides the fact that i have been waiting for this to help me relive my youth for some time, i can say i havent see a better summer blockbuster in a very long time. i hear live free or die hard is pretty bad ass too - which i definitely need to see.

my listening habits are random at best, sometimes. i assume i am not the only though. lately i have found myself listening to to a whole bunch of jagjaguwar releases but most notably wilderness’ first record and the besnard lakes’ are the dark horse. actually there is nothing particularly random about those two records, but i dont remember when i started re-listening to the wilderness record, at least. usually there is some logical progression that one will follow when gravitating towards a particular record, or at least i would think so. in regards to the besnard lakes record, well i have been listening to that all year and its fantastic.

the innocent shall suffer - big time!

is it odd that while i love the magnetic fields, i actually feel the exact opposite towards his other projects - save the first 6ths record? anyway, according to stephin’s site the new magnetic fields record is slated to be released sometime in early 08 presumably on merge. currently, he is working on a stage adaptation of neil gaimins’ coraline.

i have been listening the hell outta the charm of the highway strip and 69 love songs the past few weeks. depending on how you look at it, they are either two or four, since 69 is 3 discs, of my favorite records of all time.

yeah! oh, yeah! from disc 3 of 69 love songs

for those of us in the atlanta area, voxtrot is playing this evening, wednesday the 27, at the drunken unicorn. admittedly, i love the two eps but find their full length quite a dreadful bore. opening the evenings festivities is brooklyn’s, and misra artist, palomar. they kinda remind me of a less poppy velocity girl or as their bio states, the fastbacks. their all things, forest can be pre-ordered through the misra website.

our haunt from all things, forest

okkervil river is prepping for the release of the stage names on 8.7.07 on jagjaguwar - my favorite label the past couple of years. with only one listen under my belt i can confidently say that its pretty great and seemingly much different in terms of instrumental scope than black sheep boy, but sadly thats all i can muster in terms of an intelligent critique at the moment. here is the first single from the stage names
