are mash-ups still all the rage? i remember they were for like a second, but havent heard much on the subject for awhile. i always kinda held the mind set that if i could do it, then it really wasnt worth even thinking about. with that said, some dude that goes by dj axel has a new all mash-up record entitled breakin the law. the only reason i mention is cause the lead track is made up of a couple of my favorite songs from the 80’s, jj fad’s “supasonic,” and salt n pepa’s “push it.” he then ruins it by adding fergie into mix. fuckin meh.

pushitfergasonic

honestly, i have not been a fan of the last two flaming lips records. they both had a couple of great tracks but it was too much style and not enough substance. while i appreciate where they are going, i got off at the last stop. i much prefer the soft bulletin, transmissions, clouds taste metallic and hit to death days.

here they are playing in stockholm, sweeden on 5.2.06. its an fm broadcast, btw.

1. intro

2. race for the prize

3. free radicals

4. yoshimi

5. vein of stars

6. the yeah yeah yeah song

7. in the morning of the magicians

8. the w.a.n.d.

9. the spark that bled

10. do you realize??

the deadly syndrome sound like a warm breeze on an otherwise cool night - if that make sense. there’s a very folksie, not jon baez folk but like a califone inspired folk quality about em that just reminds me of an edge of summer/fall evening. their new record the ortolan can be streamed on their virb page.

don’t you dare take the name of texas in vain

anyone going to see isbell this sunday in atlanta? i will be there with my lady enjoying a late 7 year anniversary nights out sans child. its free so there really is no good excuses not to go.

i have given cease to begin the twice over since i got home and for those hoping for a everything all the time part 2 dont go holdin your breathe. when ben said this was going to be a more southern record he wasnt kidding. i can say after two listens though that its pretty fuckin great albeit not as immediately accessible as the before mentioned record. in case you havent heard it here is “is there a ghost” from cease to begin.

is there a ghost

there was and never will be another band quite like morphine. mark sandman, r.i.p., and co. were truly a one in a million type of band. it would be almost impossible, and probably quite embarrassing, to attempt to recreate their sound, but even more difficult to try and recreate their mood. as far as i am concerned, there is no greater soundtrack to a late night/early morning, that has been filled with too many smokes and too much booze, than any morphine record. classic stuff.

here they are performing @ lehigh university on 4.26.98. its a soundboard, btw.
