sup dickheads? there’s so much to love about dbt’s brighter than creations dark that i really could spend the better part of at least 9 -10 beers gushing over it. there are two things i would like to point out that i think put this dbt record just about every other one. the first being shonna’s backing vocals have been moved to the front of the mix. it has always seemed that her vocals were burried deep underneath the 3 guitar attack, which i have always thought was a god damn shame. no better use of her vocal talents are evident than on the beautifully penned hood track “two daughters and a beautiful wife.” shonna plays the part of the grieving wife as hood spins yarn as the husband who met an untimely death and reminisces of all the shit he left behind. “two daughters..” is probably the best lead track i have heard in a long, long time - truly gorgeous. secondly, i love all the piano/organ fills throughout, which is something that i feel has been missing out on most of the dbt records. this is actually the densest sounding dbt record yet. i didnt even think that was possible. i dont even miss jason, in all honesty. cause i would rather have an isbell solo record as opposed to two or three isbell songs on a typical dbt record. while shonna, at this point, cant replace jason’s voice and skills as a songwriter, her 3 songs are very, very good - “i’m sorry houston” in particular. i know we’re only three months into the new year, but its going to be really hard to beat this as record of the year.

i have really only heard this track, which i am really diggin, from nyc via louisville songstress dawn landes but couple that with the fact that she is just finishing up opening jason isbell and i can only hope for great things from her full length, fireproof. fireproof is due out in the us via cooking vinyl on 3.4. she’s quite loverly too, which doesnt hurt. after her stint with jason is over, she starts a tour across the pond opening for josh ritter.

she plays in athens @ the georgia theatre on wednesday w/ jason. tonight they are in wilmington, nc @ the soapbox.

if you have never checked out oakland’s why? i must contend you are missing out on something quite interesting. part hip hop, part slacker rock, part contact high in your ears, they blur genres better than any band around. the hardest part of getting into their records is yoni vocal stylings, but once you get past that its all gravy. their lastest anticon release alopecia is thus far one of my favorites of the year. i know its still early, but its a damn fine record.

alopecia is out on 3.11. you can download a bunch of previous releases via their myspace page.

captains dead’s top 13 records of the ‘07

i listened to a lot of records this year, probably too many for my own damn good. i tend to obsess over records over extended periods of time. this personality defect doesn’t really lend itself well to giving other, obsessive worthy records the ability to firmly plant themselves into my brain. so, here are my 13 favorite, see most obsessed over, records of 2007.

oh yeah, vic chesnutt and jason isbell are playing in atlanta tomorrow evening. not together unfortunately, that would be awesome. jason is playing at the variety and vic is at the earl. i havent seen vic in probably 6 years, but the last time i saw him it was at schubas and he was unbelievable. this would be a tough call.

here are two tracks from vic’s classic 91 release west of rome

i really got nothing for you up here today

can one or two of you fine peeps do me a solid? i am testing out this new theme but i seem to be having an issue when viewing it with internet explorer. for those of you using ie, can you either confirm or deny that when you click on a single post, the sidebar is all the way at the bottom of the page? kisses, greg.

oh, yeah if you are looking for an internship and are in the new york area domino records is looking for someone. they are saying that you must be available at least one full day a week, be committed to at least a 3 - 6 month internship, have a knowledge of their catalogue, friendly, focused, blah blah and you must get virtually hard or wet at that prospect of working at domino. if this sounds exciting and you think you are more than capable, email them at radio@dominorecordco.com

i forgot to mention that the teenage prayers are playing at star bar, atlanta, tomorrow evening as part of the atlantis music fest. check em out and report back.

if you are a new yorker, please do go check beirut’s two performances as part of the wordless music series. well, in this case there will be words, but thats really not the point. tonights show is at the brooklyn masonic temple and their performance on the 24th is at ny society for ethical culture. tickets are a measely 25 bucks and doors open up @ 6.30. upcoming participants in the series are grizzly bear on 11.3 and fat cat recording artist max richter, who is making his first ever us concert appearance.

i cant say i was a huge azure ray fan, but i was a big fan of the ladies of azure ray - orenda fink in particular. well, azure ray is no more, but fear not orenda has a new band, art in manila, and a new record, set the woods on fire, out now saddle creek. art in manila are out on tour, right now, with rilo kiley. orenda will be pulling double duty during the tour as not only the leading lady of art in manila but a member of rilo kiley during their performances.

here is a very cool comp of the originals of some of the more popular nirvana covers. even i have never heard the original “love buzz.” another idea i had been playing with but yet have been to lazy to get around to. someone is always one step of me, or is much more ambitious than yours truly.
