i wanted to again speak briefly about joel plaskett and his joel plaskett emergency. if you havent checked out the emergency’s decade hopping concept record, ashtray rock hit yo self in the nuts or for the ladies, your awesome boobage. the more i listen, the more i love it. definitely one of the “funnest” and “hookiest” records i have heard in ages. i dare ya to try and resist singing along to either one of these tracks.
speaking of joel plaskett, he has just launched a label and the first artist to be released on new scotland records is fellow canadian dave marsh - those canadians are always stickin together. in fact they all kind of look a like too. anyway, dave marsh’s true love rules supposedly, if you are lazy, can be compared to big star’s #1 record and bowie’s low and after listening to these two tracks i can say that’s definitely the lazy man’s reference point. until i hear more, thats about as far as i will go.
true love rules is out on july 29 on new scotland records.
when you typically speak of fun records, the downside is that they are typically not very smart and of course vice versa. but, this is not the case with canadian joel plaskett and his emergency, or just joel plaskett emergency. his ashtray rock is a really freakin fun, yet smart record. not only is it fun and smart, its a freakin concept record about two high school dudes who fall for the same chick with one eventually winning the girl’s heart and the other forming a band and of course all the other drama in between. in my opinion the world needs more concept records, especially filled with disillusionment and half baked government conspiracies ala operation:mindcrime. musically its kinda all over the board with everything ranging from 50’s to do-wop to your atypical 80’s inspired rock - see elvis costello or the likes of joe jackson as a point of reference. i am really diggin this record, check it out!
