I saw Morphine a handful of times but two shows stand out — 1) a solo Sandman show at the Middle East Upstairs at which he played a fairly amazing version of Bon Jovi’s “Wanted, Dead or Alive” and 2) the 1999 Central Square World’s Fair. As always, Mass Ave was shut down and the Fair was more packed than it’d ever been. (I took some black and white film at the show, and of course I can’t find the prints.) Sandman died a month later on stage in Italy. I mean if you’re gonna go…. As fickled fate would have it, we saw Morphine’s last US show. This is it.
