hey, ho! you all see that you can watch every south park ever aired now via southpark studios? pretty freakin awesome. i watched a bunch this morning, including the classic manbearpig and faith+1 episodes.

dont know about you but i love diy/bedroom recordings ala jack logan’s bulk, daniel johnston, a lot of lou barlow stuff and one could probably even consider all the gbv recordings up to the ric ocasek era, etc. so, it is with very little surprise that i dig benji cossa’s brand of lo-fi pop goodness. check him out!

next to the flaming lips there is no more frustrating artist than jason molina an his many monikers. one minute brilliant, the next not so much. i can take a dud here and there, its only human, but when the division between brilliance an snore city is so evenly split it makes loving him even more trying/taxing - even though i still do. anyone else have this issue with him?

for some reason you havent checked out his work here are some album tracks

sugar, mr. poon?

well, in the past 60 hours i have had 4 smokes, one of them being half smoked that was sitting in my ashtray. fuckin nasty, i know. desperate times, man. this is down from my normal pack or so a day. it hasnt been as difficult as initially thought, but thinking about it every 30 minutes makes it kinda hard. plus i havent had a drop of booze in about a week. so, my body must be going into some kind of shock. it’s like “dude wtf is up? didnt we have a good times? didnt i treat you right? what gives bro? give it up. dont be a fuckin prude!” or something like that.

in case you are interested, m.i.a. will be at criminal on halloween doing a little meet and greet starting @ 6.30 pm. she will not be performing.

insound and cmj have teamed up for a pretty cool sampler of some of the bands playing at this years fest, which i think started yesterday? the comp features mannequin men, british sea power, hallelujah the hills, the octopus project, desu, and a bunch of other cmj/insound worthy artists. download it here.

before i forget, southern shelter has a very cool magnolia electric co. recording of their recent, 9.21.07, show at the earl. during the gig, jason invited local songstress, page campbell of hope for a goldensummer to help with some of the backing duties. in case you havent checked out goldensummer as of yet, here are a few tracks. real pretty stuff, imo. they have a new record out now or soon, i believe.

portland, oregon’s the dimes’ era jumping the silent generation is akin to jumping into mr. peabody’s wabac(pronounced wayback) machine and traveling through time witnessing the trials and tribulations of the characters that inhabit it. while a lot the silent generation is era specific/driven, the songs arent weighed down with a lot of unecessary instrumentation and overdramatic lyrics that can sometimes take the listener straight from another time and place directly into the land of kitsch, which the decemberists are often guilty of. musically they are like the shins crossed with the decemberists produced by brian wilson - awesome harmonies included. definitely a top 10 contender.

the silent generation is set to be released on 12.11 on pet marmoset

i think its pretty much the concensus that everything up to head music is golden, but with the departure of bernard butler the band lost focus or maybe tried to hard that they could live without him. after not listening to head music for probably 8 years, i revisited it recently and it was a lot better than i remember it being initially. still not as good as their earlier work, but i think this fm recording breathes new life into a lot of the tracks. it was recorded at pumpehuset in copenhagen, denmark on 4.30.99

before i forget, which i have a tendency to do, jason molina aka magnolia electric co is releasing a 4 cd/1 dvd box set on 8.14 entitled sojourner. nashville moon was produced by mr king crank ass himself, steve albini, and the black ram was produced by david lowery and features a slew of guest musicians including andrew bird. now, i love jason’s work but i’ll be damned if he hasnt become more and more frustrating. so, while i am super psyched about this project i am approaching it with a tempered enthusiasm.
