jesus h christ on a popsicle stick!

have you guys seen smokin aces as of yet? going in i didnt have much of opinion other than the previews made it look kinda badass, and it doesnt disappoint. in fact, i loved it, even if it features my arch nemesis, jeremy piven, as a coked out/has been vegas performer fucktard. why is he my arch nemesis you ask? long story short is that i had three run ins with him and all three encounters were less than cool. the last time took place at the holiday club, in chicago, back in like 1999. he was at the bar with some leggy blonde, i went to say hello and shake his hand when he pulled away and acted as if he was like a ninja. he flailed his arms in a circular fashion and screamed something about a cigar - this was not done in a comedic way either. at that point i just turned and walked away. still, my distaste for mr piven didnt take away from the fact that smokin aces is pretty great.

kevin barnes is a complicated man to say the least. up until of montreal’s latest and greatest release hissing fauna are you the destroyer i never paid too much attention to the lyrical content. i mean i listened and sang along but never picked up on the running themes of isolation and despair that seemingly run through most of their/his records. they are easy to pass over because of his incorporation/fascination of that damn catchy 60’s pop/psychedelia. this new found level of the onion or of montreal as it were makes listening more like sitting in on a therapy session than just a happy little sing a long for 45 or so minutes. one of the paste reviewers said of hissing fauna that, i am paraphrasing here, its “the most fun while wrestling with somebody else’s demons.” that pretty much sums up the experience, and its a grand experience. he’s definitely gone in a more disjointed musical direction but i think it helps create a landscape that is more intune with the severity of the subject manner. hissing fauna is the sound of man and his music that both sound as if they could come undone at any moment.

here they are performing at the wonder ballroom on 2.6.07 in portland, or.

REM_1987_03.jpg

hey there, hows it goin? the past week has been quite the bitch. ever since we got back from chicago my little buddy has been feelin quite ill, as i had previously reported. yesterday he woke up with a bit of a fever, but he always runs hot as i am sure most kids his age do. anyway, so at about 1 o’clock the wife noticed that he was acting kind of lethargic and took his temperature. it was a 104.9! she called the doc and was told to bring him in in 2 hours, which i thought was a little weird but i am not a doctor. what the hell do i know? i was suprised that they didnt tell the bride to bring him to the emergency room. nobody really fuckin cares anymore. i think thats pretty apparent. you get receptionists that are sick of answerin the damn phone and will give you the generic “i’m not really listening” response. yeah, so, in the mean time he had a seizure which was brought on by his temperature. my wife loved that little episode. after 4 hours at the emergency roomed he was released with the diagnosis of “he has some kind of virus.” ok, thanks, doc. jesus christ, i had that one figured out! even with insurance i am sure this little adventure will cost a few hundred bucks. whatever, i suppose. damn you sweetwater 420 and your ability to open my wife’s legs with such ease!

along with david vandervelde’s awesome the moonstation house band, i have been diggin on sweeden’s loney dear’s loney, noir, as of late. having grown frustrated with belle and sebastian and artists of the like, loney dear fits the bill nicely. loney, noir is not life changing by any means, not every record has to, but it’s a great collection of not your garden variety pop songs.

i am john

rem is a band that you may have heard of, and probably like you, if you are older than 28, have grown quite disappointed with. their last two records, quite honestly were shit. luckily just about everything before said pieces of crap were brilliant. we live in a “what have you done for me lately” type of world, but i dont subscribe to that school of thought. well, at least most of the time. rem pretty much helped define and refine my own musical journey - i am sure a lot of 30-something music dorks will proclaim the same. i hope they still have a few classics left in them.

radiohead.jpg

i like radiohead quite a bit, but i never got why people go apeshit over them. they remind me of a sitcom that i never go out of my way to watch, but when i do catch it, i enjoy it quite a bit. my one problem with them is that the music is too cold for me to make an emotional connection. this is not to say i need to make these kind of connections with every band, but with a band i like this much, i wish it were possible. the only record i really dont dig all the much is the much beloved and highly overrated, ok computer. me thinks hail to the thief or the bends are my favorite radiohead records, although i dig kid a quite a bit. i love the dreamy pop of the bends, especially “fake plastic trees,” and “high and dry.” i have yet to hear any of their new stuff, but i am sure it will be gobbled up, even by yours truly.

did i mention the tank is a tank?

what a “not want to do anything” day this has been. the boy has been ill the past couple of days and literally has not left the couch all day today. therefore, we are wallowing in his laziness and catching up on some of our own. one downside to his current condition is that we have watched the sponge bob movie a few of times, as well as the curious george movie - which was mildly entertaining. i believe he may have some mild form of obsessive compulsive behaviour, which i can probably chaulk up to bad parenting.

have you guys checked out chicagoan david vandervelde as of yet? he’s definitely got a t rex, bowie and 70’s glam vibe going on. typically this kind of style is not my thing but he doesnt kiss too much influence ass to make it way over the fucking top. its the direction i wish dan bejar and destroyer would have taken after i first heard streethawk. david’s got a new record the moonstation house band comin out at the end of the month.

lucero’s the coldwater session

so the family and i are back safe and sound back in the atlanta area. we ended up leaving a day later than expected mostly due to my laziness and dread of sitting in a car for 12 or so hours. all in all it was definitely a better trip than the last time we visited chicago during christmas time. although, within about 12 hours of our arrival i started feeling like shit, which pretty much lasted the whole week. nothing a boat load of booze couldnt remedy.

what i gots here is a collection of lucero songs which is entitled the coldwater sessions which i know nothing about. so, if anyone has any insight on the lineage of this collection please dont hesistate to fill me in.

hey, verbena! wtf happened? w/ a knapsack beginners ep

there two bands to come out of the overcrowded underground of the mid to late nineties pop/punk/whatever crowd. one band, knapsack, immerged kinda unscathed when front man, blair shehan went onto form the equally great, the jealous sound.  i am sure most have heard of the jealous sound, but i am not to sure what kind of splash, if any, knapsack made on a global or even a national scale. there was not too much to the knapsack sound that set them apart from?other like sounding groups, but it was blair’s voice and lyrics that really made the shine. lyrically he rarely treds into the melodramatic waters like most of the groups/genres that knapsack are typically clumped together with.?all three records are just great poppy punky rock.

the other band in question is the blink and you missed em band outta the ‘ham, verbena. their 1997 debut, souls for sale, is a perfect blend of stones type swagger and a royal trux type sleaze. at the time i had not been so excited about a bands potential then that possessed by verbena. shortly after the release of souls for sale they jumped from merge to capital, and this is when it all went to shit. their sophmore/dave grohl produced record, into the pink, was a huge departure from souls for sale and sounded like an attempt win over a crowd that really no longer existed.? all things aside, souls for sale is still a freakin awesome record and i dont hold the last two heaping piles against em.
