sup dickheads? there’s so much to love about dbt’s brighter than creations dark that i really could spend the better part of at least 9 -10 beers gushing over it. there are two things i would like to point out that i think put this dbt record just about every other one. the first being shonna’s backing vocals have been moved to the front of the mix. it has always seemed that her vocals were burried deep underneath the 3 guitar attack, which i have always thought was a god damn shame. no better use of her vocal talents are evident than on the beautifully penned hood track “two daughters and a beautiful wife.” shonna plays the part of the grieving wife as hood spins yarn as the husband who met an untimely death and reminisces of all the shit he left behind. “two daughters..” is probably the best lead track i have heard in a long, long time - truly gorgeous. secondly, i love all the piano/organ fills throughout, which is something that i feel has been missing out on most of the dbt records. this is actually the densest sounding dbt record yet. i didnt even think that was possible. i dont even miss jason, in all honesty. cause i would rather have an isbell solo record as opposed to two or three isbell songs on a typical dbt record. while shonna, at this point, cant replace jason’s voice and skills as a songwriter, her 3 songs are very, very good - “i’m sorry houston” in particular. i know we’re only three months into the new year, but its going to be really hard to beat this as record of the year.

ok first things first. you would think that as a guy that spends 75 percent of his day online that i would have found out about this little piece of dbt news before today. i dont blame jason for leaving the mighty dbt cause quite frankly, if i were him, i would not have been cool with playing third fiddle to patterson and mike, as awesome as they are. in other jason news, his solo record sirens of the ditch is being released on july 1o on new west records. he is streaming three tracks from said record on his myspace page.
in other related dbt news, patterson has contributed a bunch of tracks to the upcoming release, finest worksongs: athens bands play the music of rem. this collection, also featuring the likes of the modern skirts, bain mattox, and the observatory, was recorded during a marathon like concert on 9.12.06 @ the famed 40 watt club in athens. mr stipe, mike mills and peter buck even show up on a few tracks. by the way, the observatory includes most of olivia tremor control, including will hart, members of elf power and circulatory system. buy it here and proceeds go to a couple of athens based charities.
