27, take me home

working normal hours is great, truly. its been 2 years since i started the dreaded overnight shift, and quite frankly its been hell. sure, i dont have to deal with anyone and i pretty much have free reign to do whatever it is i feel like doing, but all that awesome freedom comes with a price. i feel like shit/tired 98 percent of the time, which pretty much sucks. the only rub working days is just that, i actually have to work. its not really a rub, cause i dont mind exercising me brains now and then, but i really could do without the ever present feeling of being watched. one thing too is that all my schedules are fucked up ie eating, shitting, sleeping, and posting.

so, until i can get my bearings straight and set up a normal posting schedule here’s a new to you post, but not new to captains dead. its richard buckner and doug gillard at bottom of the hill in sf on 5.6.06.

sup, fools? got my mother fuckin stimulus check yesterday! hellz yeah!! i held it in my hand for all of 30 minutes and off to the bank it went, never to be seen or heard from again. i got these things called action bills i need to pay. fuckin white man’s got their foot on my neck.

any of you tards seein waits in knoxville? i know i sure the fuck am and it just so happens to someone’s birthday. so beers on you, bitches!

firstly, speaking of tom, that scarjo record is a fucking disgrace. she has no business trying to pull this kind of shit off. an entire record of waits songs?! she’s got some nuts, but i will give her credit for going big. with that said, i dont know whose face she got those luscious tits of hers next to but that dude better have gotten a real good peek/feel to green light this shit. i even tried creating a creepy johansson mosaic to look at whilst listening in an effort to “enhance” the experience, but all it did was put me to sleep shortly there after.

secondly, you guys hear the new hold steady song “sequestered in memphis?’ while i really dig it, i am beginning to feel that mr finn is beginning to lean a little to heavy on, well, shit/situations being “heavy” and people/ne-er-do-wells being “scared.” just saying is all.. you can stream it on their myspace page or get it from itunes.

this richard buckner interview, from a few months ago, depressed the hell out of me, not only because i hate hearing that things are “drying up for him” but the inevitablity that this will sooner or later start affecting more artists like him. apparently merge doesnt want to put out anything until ‘09 and no one wants to book him until a new record comes out. all of which makes little to no sense. even if merge didnt want to release a physical copy of the record have they not learned that a digital only release may be a viable option?  unfortunately, artists like richard only have so much of a shelf life in between records and two years in between them is a killer now a days. how long can artists like richard go on making a decent livin playing places like schubas, the earl, etc their entire career? at some point they have to outgrow those smaller places or they’re left in richards current situation. sad state of affairs for some of our most gifted artists. maybe i should start my own digital only label and start releasing stuff. i just may…

matthew loiacono is a member of the upstate new york band, the kamikaze hearts. for those that dont know, the kamikaze hearts’ oneida road was my favorite record of the 06 and in my book has since achieved the minor classic plateau. then it would be safe to assume that a man who was partly responsible for creating such a piece of work would be able to achieve a similar end result, correct? sure, why not? but its really not fair. so, i will say this, his soon to be released kentucky is a fantastic voyage into world of fractured folk centered mostly around the mandolin, banjo and sometimes only accompanied by nothing more than a stomping foot. matthew works the banjo and mandolin in ways that this guy who doesnt play either would have never thought possible. it was recorded in a basement in upstate new york in february, i can only assume it was hella cold but only adds to the atmosphere he’s created. think califone fronted by a less effected, or is it affected?, tim kinsella. kentucky is due out on 6.3 via collar city records and/or your point your local browser to itunes, amazon, etc.

two bands/records that i am still on the fence about are the terrordactyls and their self titled debut and no age’s nouns. nouns on one hand harkens me back to the lower-fi glory days of early superchunk, label mates mudhoney and present day constantines, which is all fine and awesome but there’s something about the finished product that i find both refreshing and mildly annoying. maybe they’re suckin the teet a little too much? i dont know? the terrordactyls are supposedly part of the whole anti-folk movement, which i dig, but they may be a little too cute. the songs are charming, for sure, but i think they are too fey for my liking. i still may come around, though.

i never got into portishead their first time around, and honestly i still really haven’t, but i do really dig this performance - its a soundboard from back in 95 and its actually two separate performances - they are tagged accordingly. i have the new one sitting on my external hard drive, but havent loaded it on the ipod as of yet. is it worth checking out?

sup, dudes? hey have you heard about this pretty cool new service called muxtape? its one of those why the hell didnt i think of it deals, which sadly happens quite a bit. anyway, its pretty much a service that lets you upload 11 or 12 songs and create a mixtape to share with your peoples. here is the official captains dead muxtape. i can see this being kinda addicting. if you’ve made one, please do share it with the class.

hey a new tilly and the wall song from their forthcoming record which is untitled, and is definitely not entitled O, which is due out on 6.17. the people at sorry lions straightened me out.

i dig fiddles, pedal steels, southern lilts and of course 3 piece harmonies, therefore i must dig i see hawks in la, right? i can say with some certainty that i would probably enjoy their new record, hallowed ground, based purely off this track. so, yes i guess i do like em. their ethan allen produced, hallowed ground, comes out on may 20. i believe ethan used to or still does work with daniel lanois, if that tells you anything.

how can a train get lost?

firstly, if you are in the atlanta and athens area next week my man ted leo will be at whirleyball on 8.8 and then at the 40 watt on 8.9. the show at whirleyball is an all ages and both nights raleigh’s birds of avalon will be opening the nights festivities.

check out ted’s site for upcoming tour dates

birds of avalon sound a little something like this…

their new record, bazaar bazaar, was produced and recorded by mitch easter. it can be streamed on their site.

if there’s one movie i am truly excited to see it is wes anderson’s the darjeeling limited which is out on 9.29 and stars owen wilson, jason schwartzman and adrien brody. like all anderson films before it, the darjeeling limited seems to try and find the beauty in the randomness that is the human condition. atleast, thats what i have always walked away with after experiencing his other works. here is the trailer for the darjeeling limited.

due to my complete and utter laziness, the remainder of the lyle lovett show will be posted tomorrow. in its place is richard buckner with six parts seven at turf club in st. paul on 2.28.07. thanks to dan for letting me share this show.

i love you, not in a friendly way.

hopefully everyone had an excellent weekend. mine was uneventful other than the fact that i fucked up my lawnmower. i am not mechanically knowledgeable in anyway and i didnt know there is such a thing as too much of a good thing at least when it comes to putting oil in said lawnmower. i pretty much put the whole bottle of oil into the reservoir and apparently thats a big no no. i dont understand why the hell they would allow you to put that much in when all it calls for only such a small amount? i think its a damn conspiracy set in place by the lawn mower manufacturers and their cohorts to screw over dumbasses like myself who dont bother to read/follow proper operating instructions. its always someone elses fault!

you guys ever check out this woot type site called jellyfish? its really an interesting concept. i have only checked it out at night/early am but they offer up one item and it goes down like 5 cents per second until someone buys it. in between items they have a contest that requires you to pick what you think is going to be the least popular choice amongst people voting. last night someone one 170 bucks, which is kinda cool for not really doing anything. on the sidebar is a instant messaging type of random discussion going on between everyone watching “the show.” its really a time waster if nothing else.

anyone go see richard buckner @ the earl on saturday? of course i didnt go. cause thats the way i do shit. i talk about it and then dont follow through.

mark your calendars for monday, 8.13 for neko case at the tabernacle. dont expect to see me there either not cause i dont want to but i will be outta town in cambridge, maryland for the week. anyone live around there and can maybe fill me on some stuff to do in the area. we are staying at a house on the bay and maybe looking to get out and see a show or two in the general vicinity. so, if you got any info hook a brotha up will ya? thanks.

in other non related news. outside of thinking she is total fucking pain in the ass, i am still undecided if lindsay lohan hot or not? you tell me.

speaking of the lovely atlanta ladies in the coathangers, they gots a new self titled record coming out, if is not already out. i have really dug everything i have heard from em in the past and judging by the first single i dont see why my admiration should wane. imagine if you will a more playful but equally as serious sleater kinney - i know thats a pretty lazy comparison but its mostly true.

on july 26, 1972 the rolling stones performed at madison square garden and here is that recording. this boot is commonly referred to as welcome to new york. tracks 1 - 6 are from the original tape and the rest are from the lp. the fine man commonly known as watchit on dime lovingly did some stuff do the recordings to make them sound as lovely as possible. thanks man!

boner, is your voice coming from your armpit?

pic by silky

anyone got an invite to pownce they could send my way? not too sure what i would use it for but it sounds interesting nonetheless. if you do have one to spare and wish to waste it on yours truly send it to me at gregor at captainsdead dot com. thanks in advance!

ok, i got one from through this pretty cool site i found through alexa. its called invite share and people offer up their invites to beta/invite sites like pownce, joost, etc.  it works pretty well considering i got an invite to pownce in like 5 minutes. if anyone one wants a invite to pownce i got six.

two concert reminders for the atlanta area!

david vandervelde is playing with blitzen trapper @ the drunken unicorn on friday night. i will not be in attendance, but i definitely want to hear how he is live. so, if you go let me know.

richard buckner with six parts seven and trappers cabin will be playing @ the earl on saturday. i am hoping to be in attendance. i have seen richard a bunch of times but never with a full band. so, this should be pretty damn cool.

i am quite intrigued by trappers cabin - a local atlanta/athens outfit, i assume. i dont know if its one guy or what but judging by the amount of stuff he/they have produced over the past few years he/they are definitely treading into uncle bob waters. some of the stuff is kinda quirky but still very solid. he does a great cover of elliot’s “rose parade” sounds quite a bit like him too.

as much as i am going to miss jason in dbt there is still no denying that they are one of the best bands in rock n roll. this just means cooley will hopefully get more exposure and that is definitely a good thing. any word on a cooley solo record ore when patterson’s new solo is coming out? here they are playing at the high sierra fest in quincy, ca on 7.6.07. thanks to the original taper!

the innocent shall suffer - big time!

is it odd that while i love the magnetic fields, i actually feel the exact opposite towards his other projects - save the first 6ths record? anyway, according to stephin’s site the new magnetic fields record is slated to be released sometime in early 08 presumably on merge. currently, he is working on a stage adaptation of neil gaimins’ coraline.

i have been listening the hell outta the charm of the highway strip and 69 love songs the past few weeks. depending on how you look at it, they are either two or four, since 69 is 3 discs, of my favorite records of all time.

for those of us in the atlanta area, voxtrot is playing this evening, wednesday the 27, at the drunken unicorn. admittedly, i love the two eps but find their full length quite a dreadful bore. opening the evenings festivities is brooklyn’s, and misra artist, palomar. they kinda remind me of a less poppy velocity girl or as their bio states, the fastbacks. their all things, forest can be pre-ordered through the misra website.

our haunt from all things, forest

okkervil river is prepping for the release of the stage names on 8.7.07 on jagjaguwar - my favorite label the past couple of years. with only one listen under my belt i can confidently say that its pretty great and seemingly much different in terms of instrumental scope than black sheep boy, but sadly thats all i can muster in terms of an intelligent critique at the moment. here is the first single from the stage names
