can one or two of you fine peeps do me a solid? i am testing out this new theme but i seem to be having an issue when viewing it with internet explorer. for those of you using ie, can you either confirm or deny that when you click on a single post, the sidebar is all the way at the bottom of the page? kisses, greg.

oh, yeah if you are looking for an internship and are in the new york area domino records is looking for someone. they are saying that you must be available at least one full day a week, be committed to at least a 3 - 6 month internship, have a knowledge of their catalogue, friendly, focused, blah blah and you must get virtually hard or wet at that prospect of working at domino. if this sounds exciting and you think you are more than capable, email them at radio@dominorecordco.com

i forgot to mention that the teenage prayers are playing at star bar, atlanta, tomorrow evening as part of the atlantis music fest. check em out and report back.

i cant say i was a huge azure ray fan, but i was a big fan of the ladies of azure ray - orenda fink in particular. well, azure ray is no more, but fear not orenda has a new band, art in manila, and a new record, set the woods on fire, out now saddle creek. art in manila are out on tour, right now, with rilo kiley. orenda will be pulling double duty during the tour as not only the leading lady of art in manila but a member of rilo kiley during their performances.

on a presumably cold night this past february in chicago, the men of backyard tire fire took the stage for a sold out show at the double door. that show featured the band playing their most excellent vagabonds and hooligans in its entirity. didnt make it to the show? no problem, they have the entire show available for download on their site, for free bitches! they are starting a fall tour on oct 5 at the university of illinois and along the way they will share the stage with jason isbell, craker, lynyrd skynard, and phonograph. check their site for exact dates. here are a couple of tracks from the show..

here is a very cool comp of the originals of some of the more popular nirvana covers. even i have never heard the original “love buzz.” another idea i had been playing with but yet have been to lazy to get around to. someone is always one step of me, or is much more ambitious than yours truly.

he was the patron saint of quality footwear

as far as i am concerned the best mc in hip hop right now, and really since the release of labor days, is ian matthias bavitz or aesop rock to the rest of y’all. i get the feeling that most would probably argue that statement, but other than el-p, i dont think there is another mc attempting to shift the shape of hip hop quite like aesop rock. his work is definitely not a tasty treat for the masses. his lyrics are cryptic, if not sometimes nonsensical, his voice is not what one would call radio friendly, his beats are like bomb squad tracks filtered through mud packs and his flow doesnt follow any predefined path. all of which makes the journey into his world all the more captivating. none shall pass is probably my second or third favorite of the year and could even end taking the number one spot. i hate making such bold predictions but me thinks none shall pass could go down, given time, as one of the greatest hip hop records of all time.

he is on tour as i type, and tonite finds him at the grog shop in cleveland. he finishes up his tour here in atlanta on 11.20 @ mjq.

here he is w/ rjd2 manning the wheels of steel live in asheville, nc. i dont have an exact date but me thinks it was in 02.

if you are in the atlanta area there are three noteworthy shows happening this week, two on thursday and the other on saturday. both john vanderslice @ the earl and local h @ the masquerade are playing on thursday and magnolia electric company are playing at the earl on saturday. actually, i dont know how notable local h is, but i used to go see them quite a bit back in chicago and it was always a great time. in case you forgot who or have no idea who local h is, here is a little diddy they penned a few years back.

speaking of canadians, i was very excited to hear that hayden has a new record coming out shortly. when, i dont know? but apparently its soon. its kinda funny sometimes where internet travels will take you. my initial search had nothing to do with hayden, but the next artist i am going to speak about, but somewhere along the way i ended up on his site. anyway, if you have never heard him definitely check him out. he’s got a very deadpan delivery but he writes some wonderful songs.

so, as i was saying, my initial search was centered around finding more information on patrick park’s most recent release, everyone’s in everyone. alas, i was pretty much shut down at every turn i regret to report. patrick’s previous record, loneliness knows my name, is a pretty damn fine piece of folky pop. its not brilliant my any means but it showed a lot of promise. in fact it is pretty great and only marred by a couple clunkers. i am just hoping he doesnt pull a beth orton on me. dont have much to offer, but here are a couple of edited down tracks. why edited? seems kinda ridiculous if you ask me.

somtimes its hard differentiating between the sincere and really fuckin pretentious. cause there’s really a fine line. such is my problem with team love(r), david dondero. i want to believe its the former, cause these two songs are really quite good. maybe its his charlie parker references in “rothko chapel” or his association with team love that sends up some kind of off color flag. i am not conor oberst hater, in fact i actually enjoy his stuff, in small doses, but lets be honest he’s got a flair for the over dramatic. i digress, dondero definitely knows how to pen a lyric, thats for sure, and they are nothing like oberst’s, but his delivery which comes equipped with a slight warble, keeps me from jumping on the wagon with full force. thats not to say i wont come around, but right now that damn impediment is slightly off putting.

up until a couple of days ago i cant tell you the last time the sounds of jon spencer blues explosion graced my ears - probably at least 5 years or more. while i own every jsbx record, orange being the best, i just dont ever feel up to the task. they have always been a little mentally taxing to me. this is not to say they arent great, but well you know..

here they are playing at the whiskey a go-go on 1.4.95.

cigarettes and coffee: an alcoholic’s best friend

has anyone seen “celebrity” rap superstar? it has to be the most god-awful show to ever disgrace the tube.i caught one episode and it actually caused me to feel very depressed. just cant believe people will go to such great lengths to sell their souls for an extra 2 minutes of f list fame. this is one of those instances where i would love to take the brain child and/or the exec who greenlighted this, lock them in a room with no ventilation, cover the floor with about 2 inches of the most vile diarhea immaginable, prop their eyes open alaa clock work orangeand put the video of that money drinking its own piss on constant loop.

ani difranco and i have a weird relationship. i absolutely love her live disc, living in clip, but my adoration stops there. i respect her and her music and i really want to dig more of here stuff but i havent been able to get behind any of her other recordings. maybe her recently released career retrospective, canon, will help open my ears to something i may have been previously missing.

i would be hugely surprised if chicago’s the 1900’s werent lighting up the blogosphere. simply put, they just sound, think belle and sebastian having relations with 10,000 maniacs whilst hopped up on the 70s, like a band that people would dig. not the flavor of the month kinda dig, but the i am still going to call in the morning kinda dig. their new record cold and kind is out on 10.2 on parasol.

richmond fontaine’s the fitzgerald floored me the first time i heard it and with each successive listen i found myself falling under their spell. its a painfully somber record but oddly uplifting. if you have ever noticed i quite often liken records to life experiences, whether i have ever had them or not, cause these experiences deserve soundtracks and the fitzgerald is no different. to me, the fitzgerald, sounds like burying a body in a field during the dead of winter - that is if you can actually envision that process having a soundtrack.

they have a new record out, thirteen cities, that i didnt even know existed up until a couple of days ago. needless to say i have yet to check it out.

indiana! holy smoke! i am so pleased that you are not dead!

if i ever mention eating at crystals again please just go ahead and kick me in the nuts and then feed me rancid milk cause this is the second time in 4 months that i have become violently ill after eating some of that greasy goodness. after attending the isbell show at the park tavern last evening the wife and i thought it would be a swell idea to pick some up. they were so freakin good going down, comin back up not so much. so please dont let me do that ever again no matter how great of an idea it sounds like at the time.

if thou are in the atlanta area you may want to spend the night and help ben trickey celebrate the release of his newest record. the show is only 5 bucks and the record is only 7 bucks. great music, great venue and cheap beer, what else could one wish for? check out his myspace page for 3 new tracks. in the meantime here are some older ben trickey gems.

for those of you’s across the pond, one of my favorite master of ceremonies, el-p or el producto, is bringing his gift of gab to your neck of the woods. i have read quite a bit how a lot of people in the hip hop community and its legions of fans dont really dig el-p and his hip hop stylings. its all quite confusing to me cause here is an artist pushing the boundaries, blurring lines, breathing life into an already stale genre and releasing some of the best records out there, hip hop or not. maybe its a race thing, i dont know. his most recent, ill sleep when youre dead is truly a phenomenal piece of work is highly recommended. check his myspace page for dates.

i used to know the drummer for chicago’s frisbie and had the chance to see em a couple of times at the hideout. each time i saw em i walked away really wanting to dig their sound but they just wouldnt take. that was more than a few years ago. so, when i got an email annoucing their newest release, new debut, i was mildy excited to see what they were up to. well, its more or less the same in the frisbie world and while its not a bad thing its just not my thing. this is weird cause i love power pop as much as the next dork, but they are just a little too sugary for my liking. the title track does have a pretty cool styx rockin the paradise era like chorus.

son of a bitch, im sick of these dolphins

i am going to go out on short limb to state that i dont think any record from here on out is going to be able to stop band of horses’ cease to begin on its quest to be my record of the year. its going to take upwards of 10 or so listens for the slow burn to begin to leave its mark.

unfortunately, grandaddy suffers from the “i dont ever go out of my way to listen to em until they are shuffled through on the ipod” disease. even then, most of the time, i usually just let that single track burrow into my subconscious and not actually revisit one their records until several days later. with that said, i have been listening to just like the fambly cat
quite a bit as of late and my only one major issue with it is that its really freakin depressing. reading interviews with jason before its release didnt help matters at all either. anyone else get that feeling after a listen?
