i fell for her like a blind roofer

roxy.jpg

sup? for you futurama fans, like myself, out there, adult swim is airing nothing but until 11.30 pm, new years eve.

i’m curious did you guys/gals get anything from your respective companies for xmas? its gotten to the point that i would rather get nothing than what they try and shovel on us. i dont want to sound ungrateful, but did i really need a 20 buck gift card to carrabba’s? really, i didnt; but, thanks anyway, i suppose. since i am no fan of the joint i will be losing money on a meal that i didnt care to have in the first place. here’s an idea spend the extra 30 cents or whatever and get everyone visa gift cards or something similiar. maybe i am just becoming too disenchanted with the ways of corporate america.

so, i went through the entire pfork list last night and listened to whomever i was not familiar with. i was hoping that i would come away with at least a few new bands worth investigating further. the sad truth is that 90 percent of the tracks that make up their list are pure shite. ok, maybe not 90 but at least 70. still a sad state of affairs on what they consider to be the best of the best. lcd soundsystem? two tracks int the top ten? are you fuckin kidding me? the only two i can agree with are panda bear’s “bro,” which should be single of the year, and interestingly enough, “umbrella” - i liked it the first time i heard it. the only band that made an impression on me was the funky stones/springsteen/marah inspired sounds king khan & his shrines. check em out.

back in my early twenties i went through a mildly big roxy music phase which just so happened to coincide with my own personal british invasion. then like a lot of musical awakenings, see obsessions, it ended up abruptly. the only record i listen to with any regularity from that era of my life is blur’s parklife and pulp’s this is hardcore - which i still contend is one of the best records ever recorded. as of late i have found a new appreciation for roxy music’s siren and country life. i dont know what made me pull them back out, but its always a testament to the strength of a record when it sounds as good as the first time you heard it.

here they are playing in 75 on the siren tour. as a note, she sells might actually be the second track and it is tagged as such. the first actual track is missing but it may be just crowd noise.

i am still having a hard time dealing with the recent booting off of sam on bret michaels rock of love. sure, she had a seemingly endless amount of trust issues, was white as a bob barker’s hair and had that funky gap tooth but she was cute as hell. meh, he doesnt deserve her anyway. i am sure he will end up picking heather the 32 going on 52 year old. she’s dang nasty in every conceivable definition of the word. i wouldnt even fuck her with your dick.

anyone seen once yet? i hear that its supposed to be quite wonderful.

btw, if you werent aware, senor jobs is announcing a slew of ipod stuff today, actually like right now. he’s already announced a new widescreen nano. check engadget for developing details.

i have to admit, atlanta’s gringo star’s name really annoys me. the music’s good, the name not so much. so the quandry that lays ahead of me is how can i respect a band’s music if i dont respect the name that they have chosen to share with the world? it reminds me of a high fidelity type question. anyway, like i said their music is pretty damn good and really thats all that matters. even if i have a hard time letting name roll off my tounge without grimacing, but i digress. if you are a lover of 60’s era kinks, or that oozie pop goodness that only big star can provide then the southern gentlemen of gringo star should put you into some kinda saccharin, with a splash of whiskey, induced haze

their self titled debut record is out now, i believe

sticking with my issue with band names, chicago’s head of femur gets the award for most misleading. to me, head of femur sounds like a name reserved for goth or death metal band. throw in “bloody” or “black” in front of their name and there you have it! i dont want to mislead cause i actually dig their name. what about the music you ask? im gettin there, dont rush me. they are actually kinda hard to describe, intelligently. the title track off their upcoming leader and the falcon ep, due on 10.2, starts off with a springsteen-esque tickling of the ivories then they break into e6 inspired harmonies - thats all within the first 10 seconds. from there its just good ol’ smart pop that will definitely illude the masses. call me absolutely crazy, but one thing i keep hearing throughout is the escape club’s “wild, wild west.” am i the only one?

they are doing a short tour. make sure to check their myspace page for dates.

i dont give enough damn love to matthew sweet thats for sure. he singlehandedly changed the way i look/listen to pop music with the release of the classic girlfriend and the often misunderstood, but no less brilliant altered beast. here are the demos to the latter; a set commonly referred to as superdeformed.

this is a drug, for the world, to give worms to ex-girlfriends

well, after years of half heartedly wondering what david yow, ex-jesus lizard and scratch acid, was up to my search has come to an end. apparently, he’s fronting a newish los angeles based trio called qui. they arent exactly newish, i suppose, seeing as they have been around since 2000 but qui is newish to david yow. i would be lying if i said qui didnt bear a decent resemblance to jesus lizard, but i guess with mr yow at the helm its kinda hard to fit him into a different mold. this is not a bad thing by any means, im just sayin. they dont have any tunes posted anywhere, that i could find, outside of their myspace page. they have a record coming out sometime soon according to their myspace page.

if you are unfamiliar with the jesus lizard here is at least in my mind the quintessential jesus lizard song.

im going to be honest, i know nothing about radio birdman outside of this show from cats cradle on 6.29.07. a dear reader requested it so therefore i had to comply. for those familiar with australia’s radio birdman which record should i start with if i were to get into their catalogue?

my relationship with allison ashmore lasted for 6 hours

dont know if i mentioned but i somehow landed a new job, which i started a couple of weeks ago. its a cool gig although not particularly exciting - monitoring the wan for the army. the only real downfall is that i, again, work nights - 11 pm - 7 am. it is a grand time to study for my ccna. yeah, exciting shit, i know.

anyway, one band i used to absolutely love, and still do, is knoxville’s power pop maestro’s superdrag. sadly, they disbanded a few years ago. lead dragger, john davis, released a solo record last year but it failed to live up to the quality released by his former group. walking along side the footsteps of superdrag is another knoxville based group, tenderhooks. i have only listened to the first single, “kidstuff,” off their yet to be released, don coffey, jr, of superdrag fame, produced record vidalia, but its pretty damn good. if you dig cheap trick, big star, superdrag, etc then these guys and one gal are probably gonna scratch right where you been itchin.

both of those tracks are off of their last real release, last call for vitriol. they just released a collection of home recordings and other goodies entitled changing tires on the road to ruin.

ok, so i am preparing to bust out my black and orange zubazz that may or may not be 3 sizes to small. considering the last time i wore them was 1987. the way i look at is this. firstly, people will get a great and enhanced view of my junk due to the extreme tightness of said zubazz. secondly, it maybe another 20 years before i get to bust them out again and at that time i will be 52 thus making it oh so creepy. on top of the zubazz i got my “monsters of the midway” foam finger, a ditka shirt portraying him as jesus, a bears helmet that conveniently holds chips and salsa, and my good luck saint singletary charm. if there is a god in heaven, he will look down on the bears and their fans and grant them just one more victory in what has already been a season full of heavenly miracles. also, i dont think i can take any more 85 bears references. seriously, its time to move on people.

and we’re off and my top 9 of the ‘06

newsubs.jpg

this is my car. in roughly 12 hours the family and i will be making the laborious 12 hour trek from my adopted home of atlanta, ga to the city of my birth and raising chicago, il. the last time we took this trip during the holiday season, it took us 48 hours. it was hell on earth. luckily it looks like baby jesus is going to have pity on my delicate soul and give us at least half way decent driving weather. if you, dear person, could through some decent vibeage my way so we make it there in one piece, it would be greatly appreciated. it just maybe your only ticket into heaven.

without much further ado, here is my top 9 records of the year, lovingly handcrafted into haiku form.

mary lou lord live in boston 9.9.05

there is no sweeter voice in all of music than the one owned by mary lou lord. even with all her voice’s sweetness there is a hint of sadness in just about every song she sings. i guess thats why i really connect with her and her choices of songs she covers, because even the greatest moments in ones life are filled with a little bit of melancholy.

she doesnt write too many songs, but the ones she has are pretty solid - see what was supposed to be a breakout record, got no shadow for proof. the songs she covers are grade A and often will include the works of springsteen, elliot smith, teenage fanclub, richard thompson, and her favorite go to guy, the much unappreciated nick solomon aka the bevis frond. i cant stress enough the awesomeness of nick saloman and his work. unfortunately, his records can be hard to come by but they are well worth the hunt.

for those that are not up on the history of miss lord, please check out her wikipedia page and if you are feeling up to it here is some info on mr saloman.
