im secretary of state, brought to you by carl’s jr

byrds-thereisaseason2.jpg

hey, hey! so, i stopped that whole words and guitar experiment after a scant number of posts. i realized half way through the last post that i hated my own stories. couple that with my dwindling memory of yesteryear and my ever shrinking personal time, it just wasnt going to happen the way i wanted.

never heard of this kid, james mcavoy, but apparently he has been picked to portray cobain in the long talked about biopic.

robert goulet is dead, my friends and sadly the only thing i know about him is this..

its kind of hard, at least for me anyways, to not dig dc’s the carribean. they make a nice chill sound that would go down nicely with a hoegaarden or two or three and a smoke or an entire pack. they’re an interesting meld of the shins pop sensibilities and the sea and cake’s ever present jazz leanings. their new record, populations, is out today. check em out.

i was a late bloomer when it comes to actually listening to the byrds. i was a burrito brothers fan about 4 or 5 years prior to ever listening to sweetheart of the rodeo. one would think that i would have made the transition to the byrds a lot sooner, but such was not the case. it wasn’t until i dove into sweetheart and then their back catalogue how much on a different level they were than the burrito bros. sure they burrito’s are great, but their first two records are the only ones really worth owning in my opinion. the byrds catalogue, on the other hand, is absolutely stellar. well, at least the period from 65 -68 is, but during that time they put out 6 classic records.

here they are performing at the avalon in san francisco on 11.2.68. for a recording that is almost 40 years old it sounds superb.

i’ll lose everything, but i wont let go of your hand

welcome to the first installment of “the same 5 questions with…” the first willing participant to take on these 5, albeit very lame questions is montreal, canada’s bad flirt - who play the treehouse in lawrenceville, ga on saturday evening.

the six members that make up bad flirt conjure up a sound that reminds me of makin out. not like the awkward mashin of your early teens, but like the late night alcohol fueled encounters some of us have somehow talked ourselves into and then only very awkwardly talked ourselves out of sometime the next day. maybe its cause lead flirt jasamine’s vocals makes my brain recall a dream i once had about makin out with juliana hatfield, who jasamine kinda sounds like. or maybe its their three guitar attack that gives me that tingly feeling. who knows? whatever it is, bad flirt make a sound that i truly dig. even if i aint gettin any. at least, at the moment.

1. your record would be the perfect soundtrack to what?
An episode of Thats So Raven.

2. what are you putting off today that you wont get to tomorrow?
showering and finally buying healthy food. ah, the luxuries of tour.

3. we are all our own worst critic. is there anything, no matter how minuscule, about your record that annoys you?
Jared Leto’s harmonies aren’t what we hoped they would be…but we made do with what we had.

4. is it better to has been or a never was?
Has beens still get royalty checks.

5. tell the world a secret.
We hate babies. But we love puppies!

they have a record coming out sometime next year, and this is a track for that yet unnamed record.

heart of darkness

let it be known that after putting all this together, i watched the video for the above track and what does it have two people doing at the beginning? thats right makin out! i knew it!

their self titled debut can be purchased through their site, or maybe even at their show. check their myspace page for upcoming dates.

i talked about the ladies in atlanta’s coathangers about a month ago but i thought they deserved to be regurgitated. their new record, which i have not heard as of yet, is out on 9.4 and have made a couple more tracks from the release available for public consumption. i dont know what it is, but for some reason whenever i hear the coathangers i feel like getting laid. wow, i must really be deprived. two mildly sexual references in one post.

i love you, not in a friendly way.

hopefully everyone had an excellent weekend. mine was uneventful other than the fact that i fucked up my lawnmower. i am not mechanically knowledgeable in anyway and i didnt know there is such a thing as too much of a good thing at least when it comes to putting oil in said lawnmower. i pretty much put the whole bottle of oil into the reservoir and apparently thats a big no no. i dont understand why the hell they would allow you to put that much in when all it calls for only such a small amount? i think its a damn conspiracy set in place by the lawn mower manufacturers and their cohorts to screw over dumbasses like myself who dont bother to read/follow proper operating instructions. its always someone elses fault!

you guys ever check out this woot type site called jellyfish? its really an interesting concept. i have only checked it out at night/early am but they offer up one item and it goes down like 5 cents per second until someone buys it. in between items they have a contest that requires you to pick what you think is going to be the least popular choice amongst people voting. last night someone one 170 bucks, which is kinda cool for not really doing anything. on the sidebar is a instant messaging type of random discussion going on between everyone watching “the show.” its really a time waster if nothing else.

anyone go see richard buckner @ the earl on saturday? of course i didnt go. cause thats the way i do shit. i talk about it and then dont follow through.

mark your calendars for monday, 8.13 for neko case at the tabernacle. dont expect to see me there either not cause i dont want to but i will be outta town in cambridge, maryland for the week. anyone live around there and can maybe fill me on some stuff to do in the area. we are staying at a house on the bay and maybe looking to get out and see a show or two in the general vicinity. so, if you got any info hook a brotha up will ya? thanks.

in other non related news. outside of thinking she is total fucking pain in the ass, i am still undecided if lindsay lohan hot or not? you tell me.

speaking of the lovely atlanta ladies in the coathangers, they gots a new self titled record coming out, if is not already out. i have really dug everything i have heard from em in the past and judging by the first single i dont see why my admiration should wane. imagine if you will a more playful but equally as serious sleater kinney - i know thats a pretty lazy comparison but its mostly true.

random song i used to be, and still kinda am, obsessed withslackjawed - the connells

on july 26, 1972 the rolling stones performed at madison square garden and here is that recording. this boot is commonly referred to as welcome to new york. tracks 1 - 6 are from the original tape and the rest are from the lp. the fine man commonly known as watchit on dime lovingly did some stuff do the recordings to make them sound as lovely as possible. thanks man!

bobs gone. he stole his car.

i know i am a bit behind the curve here, well about a month or so, but this here besnard lakes record is pretty phenomenal. if you took the best parts of my bloody valentine’s loveless, but with vocals you can actually understand, and threw in harmonies reminiscent of 60’s/70’s california inspired pop would have the besnard lakes. if jagjaguwar were a woman i would make sweet love to her just about every night. everything they put out is pretty damn fantastic.

and you lied to me

i also wanted to mention atlanta’s own the coathangers, which i discovered through the wonderful cable and tweed. they are an all girl, and quite sexy, poppy punk group with cheerleader-esque leanings. the songs are quite comical but seem to have a socially concious undertones. so check em out if they sound up your alley.

if you are feeling up to it, feel free to download or stream the third installment of the captains dead podcast. i had visions of grandeur when i woke up this morning, but those visions quickly caved to the side of laziness. there is some good shit that you may not have heard before, featuring the likes of lois, tad, jolene, mike johnson, ox, etc…. i am going to attempt to do a weekly podcast from here on out. we’ll see how long that lasts.
