wanted to make mention that the everybodyfields are coming to the earl on friday, 3.14, but they are on an extensive tour as i type. check their myspace page for a list of dates - they play tomorrow evening in centralia, wa @ olympic club hotel. if you havent check out their latest, and my favorite of 07, nothing is okay, i cant recommend it enough. it is one of the most achingly gorgeous records i have heard in at least 10 years. vocally, i havent come across a pair like jill and sam since jay farrar and kelly willis’ take on townes’ “rex blues” - see video as evidence. the production is definitely not your standard folk/countryish fare. its actually very reminiscent of some of daniel lanois’ work which is to say its fuckin awesome. anywho, check em out.

sup, peoples? we need to, as a nation, chill the fuck out. for reals. what in the fuck is going on with these shootings? moreover, what is up with these fuckers committing these heinous and selfish acts and then offing themselves? i guess its better than wasting tax payers money on a long drawn out hearing ala the brian nichols case here in atlanta. i dont, and never will understand what triggers such acts but why the fuck they have to involve other people? anyway, sad stuff.

one more thing. why in the hell our we wasting, and i mean wasting, money on these mitchell report hearings? i love baseball, more than most, but dont we have more pressing things that we should be worried about? fuckin a, i dont give a shit if pettite or clemmens or who the fuck took hgh. its a damn game! what a waste. our, or shall i say our governments priorities need to shift just a wee bit to shit that really matters.

stephen malkmus and the jicks make their way to the variety on 3.26 w/ john vanderslice opening up. will hopefully be checkin this out.

for you smokers out there. am i the only one to have a thousand lighters, but never one actually on my persons? its just a given that i never have a lighter and i since i dont actually carry money on me, i refuse to debit a buck for one. i have been trying to quit so you would think that the absence of a lighter would be a sign, but its not.

ex-varnline and all around awesome guy, anders parker is playing tonight at the earl. he’s got a new live record out called 14th and division: live in portland, oregon august 2.2005. its awesome, by the way, and can be purchased through his site, on his current tour and maybe on itunes.

there’s something strangely comforting about jeremy grites and jason brown’s swivel chairs. i cant quite my get head around them just yet, though. they must have been raised in the 80’s cause their is something about their guitar tones that leads me to believe they nurtured their brand of rock/pop on the cassette tape. they just dont sound like a band from the 00’s and maybe its cause i have been listening to a bit of xtc lately, but brown’s plaintive delivery on “afterthought” is quite andy partridge-esque. pretty cool stuff…

i love spacerock. plain and simple. sadly, there arent too many groups tripping down that road worth mentioning now-a-days. out the other side of my mouth, san francisco’s wooden shjips travel and as far as i am concerned, own that road. they got a new self title record out now on holy mountain records.

i highly recommend that you listen with whatever kind of headphones you may have.

i dont know you, but when i want to dive into the westerberg book of songs i more often than not reach for his solo rather than replacements stuff. its a strange phenomenon though cause his best penned words, i think, can be found on much of the replacements records, but i find myself connecting more to the “grownup” paul. even if at the time, i was kinda down on a few of his solo records, most notably eventually and suicaine gratification, cause i wanted him to be stupid, drunk and 20 forever. i was probably projecting some of my own shit about growing up onto him in some weird way.

here he is playing and being interviewed by former del fuego, warren zanes @ first ave on 9.23.07. thanks very much to the original taper!

top o’ the morning. you guys hear about that purported meg white sex tape? yeah, well if you go to egotastic you can check it out, or atleast a minute or two of it. its clearly not her, but for a minute i was mildly excited. i mean the body says maybe but the face says not so fast champ. i still watched the whole clip, you know just to make sure. in the end, it was just some chick with a big rack gettin nailed and a set of nuts i didnt need to see. oh well. i should mention that its definitely nsfw.

go bears!? ugh…

i still cant get over how awesomely hilarious sunday nights season opener of family guy was. i knew they were doing something star wars related but i didnt know that they were pretty much running through all of episode iv. very very cool.

lookin for something to do this fine evening in atlanta? well, the sea and cake are playing at the earl at 9ish, probably wont be more like 11 until they go on. then animal collective plays at the variety tomorrow evening. i am still vey much on the fence regarding my opinion of animal collective. although, the new one is supposed to be pretty good? anyone hear it yet?

the more i listen to iron and wine’s “boy with a coin” from the shepherds dog i become more convinced that its probably my favorite song of the year. for all 4 of you that have somehow not participated in the iron and wine frenzy, check it!

i like this kid, markland starkie, and his sleeping states. he states that he has a real issue with the whole singer-songwriter genre and finds it “cheesy beyond belief.” now, i am not to sure what he’s doing to change anyone’s perceptions of the dreaded singer-songwriter genre but it sounds good to me.

its been a long ass time since i have done something gbv related. mostly due to not having a huge quality selection to choose from, at least the avenues i travel, and well thats probably it. so today is the aborted gbv record, circa 1995, the power of suck. now from all accounts, the power of suck, was going to be a concept record about the mediocre rise to success that gbv garnered after bee thousand and going into alien lanes. its all folklore at this point but check the gbv database for further details.

if you are in the atlanta area there are three noteworthy shows happening this week, two on thursday and the other on saturday. both john vanderslice @ the earl and local h @ the masquerade are playing on thursday and magnolia electric company are playing at the earl on saturday. actually, i dont know how notable local h is, but i used to go see them quite a bit back in chicago and it was always a great time. in case you forgot who or have no idea who local h is, here is a little diddy they penned a few years back.

speaking of canadians, i was very excited to hear that hayden has a new record coming out shortly. when, i dont know? but apparently its soon. its kinda funny sometimes where internet travels will take you. my initial search had nothing to do with hayden, but the next artist i am going to speak about, but somewhere along the way i ended up on his site. anyway, if you have never heard him definitely check him out. he’s got a very deadpan delivery but he writes some wonderful songs.

so, as i was saying, my initial search was centered around finding more information on patrick park’s most recent release, everyone’s in everyone. alas, i was pretty much shut down at every turn i regret to report. patrick’s previous record, loneliness knows my name, is a pretty damn fine piece of folky pop. its not brilliant my any means but it showed a lot of promise. in fact it is pretty great and only marred by a couple clunkers. i am just hoping he doesnt pull a beth orton on me. dont have much to offer, but here are a couple of edited down tracks. why edited? seems kinda ridiculous if you ask me.

somtimes its hard differentiating between the sincere and really fuckin pretentious. cause there’s really a fine line. such is my problem with team love(r), david dondero. i want to believe its the former, cause these two songs are really quite good. maybe its his charlie parker references in “rothko chapel” or his association with team love that sends up some kind of off color flag. i am not conor oberst hater, in fact i actually enjoy his stuff, in small doses, but lets be honest he’s got a flair for the over dramatic. i digress, dondero definitely knows how to pen a lyric, thats for sure, and they are nothing like oberst’s, but his delivery which comes equipped with a slight warble, keeps me from jumping on the wagon with full force. thats not to say i wont come around, but right now that damn impediment is slightly off putting.

up until a couple of days ago i cant tell you the last time the sounds of jon spencer blues explosion graced my ears - probably at least 5 years or more. while i own every jsbx record, orange being the best, i just dont ever feel up to the task. they have always been a little mentally taxing to me. this is not to say they arent great, but well you know..

here they are playing at the whiskey a go-go on 1.4.95.

its only about 5 minutes in and i already had to turn off the irish and michigan game. my irish not lookin so good. in fact, downright embarrassing. then to add insult to injury i turn on the red sox/yankees game and jeter knocks one out off josh beckett. i hate, nay, loathe derek jeter.

for those in the atlanta area, mark your google calendars for 10.5 for my man adam franklin, formerly of swervedriver, is coming to town for a show at the earl and an instore at criminal earlier in the evening. his new record, bolts of melody, is quite grand.

in 1990 mother love bone’s apple was like manna from heaven to these 16 year old ears. the strange thing about recalling memories is that its easy to describe what you were feeling but more difficult to explain why you were feeling it. such is the case with apple. i remember being absolutely enamored by it, but dont really remember why. so, to get to the bottom of this, i pulled it out the other day and tried to recall, only this time with 33 year old ears. to say the experiment was a failure would do apple a grave injustice, but for the life of me i really cant pinpoint what i loved about it so. it’s still a great record, even if it time has not been overly kind to it, but you just have to put the time and place it was recorded all into perspective.

you wasted my clearisil on another picture of thor?

sup peoples? if you have not noticed i have had to disable the music player that usually accompanies all posted tracks. there has been some unscrupulous activity going on behind the scenes and until i ban all the ip’s, which is about half of china, that are causing all the issues, the music player will remain down. you can, of course, still download the stuff as usual and if you want to stream it just click on the track. a new window should open up.

for those in the atlanta area, lucero is playing at the earl tomorrow evening. unfortunately, i will not be in attendance due to scheduling conflicts. they are coming back sometime in october though.

two other atlanta shows i wanted to make mention of, and are both free, are jason isbell at the park tavern on 9.9 and the apples in stereo, also at the park tavern on 9.23. its part of 99x’s unplugged in the park series.

have you folks heard of caleb boddicker, or boddicker for short, as of yet? its wunderkind’s like this that just make me sick. the story goes that at 16 he recorded a 22 track demo in his bedroom and ended up sending up 1000 copies of it. of course, his run of good luck doesnt end there. if it did i probably wouldnt be talking him now would i? isaac brock ended up getting his paws on a copy and passed it along to the folks at sub pop. fast forward 4 years and he is doing a 3 week recording stint, which would result in his official debut record big lionhearted and the gallant man, with my man brian deck at engine studios. it would seem that this pairing of boddicker and deck was a no brainer if not a match made in some weird alternate universe. boddicker’s brand of microphones/califone/sparklehorse brand of disjointed pop is a deck specialty. check it!
