the everybodyfields vs huey lewis and the news

happy labor day fellow americans. hopefully everyone everyone from the gulf coast is outta harms way. been watching coverage all morning and so far it seems as if everything is holding, but the worst is yet to come, supposedly.

captains dead favorites, the everybodyfields performed an impromptu and a capella version of the everly brothers’ “let it be me” for paste during their recent stop over in atlanta. a show i was not able to attend…. click here to check it out.

in case you missed these gems the first 10 times i posted em.

i will not deny my roots. therefore, i must contend that for the longest time, at least until i was 12, i worshipped huey lewis and the news’ picture this and sports. i believe i listened to em so much that i bought multiple copies of the cassettes, but of course had to upgrade to cd. “i want a new drug” was the first and oly song my mother ever barred me from listening to - that banning only lasted about a day or so. they still hold an odd place in my ever blackening heart.

here they are performing in the wttw studios, thats in chicago, in 1994. there are some edits that were probably done for commercial breaks and such.

a person remains conscious for eight seconds after being decapitated

hola, dickweeds! couple o’ things. firstly, those fucktards tried to do me in again yesterday but the fine folks @ imountain were quick to punch and thwarted their asshatery before it got too serious. so here’s the bad news, there’s going to be some necessary changes coming in the near future. while thats not necessarily bad, what is going to be a fuckin bitch is that we are going to have to say goodbye to anything older than a month or so. if there is anything you have been meaning to get, get it now. i am slowly downloading everything off my server so there is a good possibility i will be able to take requests for reposts. thats that bullshit, secondly, it looks as if i will be indeed moving to columbia, sc. i have yet to hear it officially but my sources tell me that i should get that word soon, maybe today. there’s two things i hate, well there’s actually a lot of shit, but to keep it on topic the two things i loathe are packing and moving. good times ahead…

head on over, if you havent already, to daytrotter and bask in the glory that is an everybodyfields sessions. jill’s voice sounds even lovelier live than on record, which i didnt think would be possible.

i’m not a huge fan of mashup stuff, but i think the hood internet’s melding of the 85 bears’ superbowl shuffle, wilco’s “jesus etc” and some kanye west track is pretty damn good/funny. check it!

btw, calexico’s carried to dust is so, so excellent. the production is much like iron and wine’s the shepherds dog, and while it is still very much a calexico sounding record there are large traces of los lobo’s evil but funkier cousin, the latin playboys, to be heard. awesome! definitely going to be a contender for record o’ the year, 08.

here’s a lovely pj harvey show from big day out in australia back in ‘01. did anyone get into her last record, white chalk - i believe it is called? i may have listened to it once, or maybe twice but i know it didnt grab me at all. should i even go back and revisit it?

man its hotter than a motherfucker down here, but i know we aint alone. one thing i love about the south is that no matter how hot it gets you will still seem quite a few ladies dressed to the nines. it was about 90 degrees at 10 am on saturday while we were at the virginia highlands summerfest. i was sweating my ass off in shorts, flip flops and a holy t-shirt and what comes struttin down highland ave but a bunch of 20 something broads who looked like they just stepped out of the 80’s porno version of sex and the city. they werent the only ones though, not by a long shot. i guess i just dont understand the southern thing sometimes.

if i am not mistaken there was a big to-do made about benji hughes a year or so back and i paid it no mind, but i think i do remember the stir he caused. regardless of my shitty ass memory, he’s got a new ep entitled a little extreme coming out which is in preparation of his 25 song debut, a love extreme, which comes out on new west on 7.22. at this juncture i am still making up my mind on whether i dig him or not. i like his whimsical style, but not so crazy about his voice. he may grow on me though. the below tracks are from the ep but also on a love extreme.

if ya dig rustic and gritty americana type stuff, as i do, then you should find william f. gibbs to your liking. he’s got a new one out that he has called my fellow sophisticates. the more i listen to his stuff streaming via his myspace page the more it convices me that i must investigate further. btw, you can buy my fellow sophisticates via old man records.

this is a warning to all of you! if for some reason someone comes to your door asking you to take part in some kind of survey about home allergens and the like, say no and calmly shut the door. my wife made the mistake of saying yes and was proceeded to have the bait and switch pulled on her by a kirby vacuum salesmen. i was sleeping and at about 5 pm i heard vacuuming and then male voices which kind of alarmed me but not really. when the vacuuming didnt seem to have an end in sight, i got up to see what the fuck was going on. long and short, they wanted to sell me this vacuum for $1945! by the time the left, 4 hours later, the price was down “only” $1100, we could put down $300 and our payments would only be like $80 a month for 24 months!? if i half a nut, i would have thrown him out as soon as i saw what was going on, but i am way too damn nice. i love at end of his hard sell he started the guilt trip saying that he wouldnt let a baby crawl on our floor with the vacuum we are using. so, dont say i didnt warn you.

friends of captains dead, hallelujah the hills are offering up a free download of their prepare to qualify ep, which i can attest is pretty freakin awesome. here be a couple of tracks, click here for the whole deal.

for my friends in the uk, on april 24 my favorite record of 2007, the everybodyfield’s nothing is okay is being released in your neck of the woods. i cannot recommend the sheer beauty and brilliance of this record enough. even if you’re not going to listen to all of the tracks, at least listen to “leaving today.” me thinks you shall be deeply rewarded.

as you may or may not know, or actually care for that matter, i am a sucker for the hook and harmonies. knowing this, it should come as no surprise to learn that when i popped in boston boys, the rationales’ the going is gone ep, my ears were like puddy in their hands. fronted by singer/songwriter dave mirabella, the rationales are made up of some of the finest musicians that side of the mason dixon, and their the going is gone was recorded at the famed q division studio with producer ed valauskas (the gentlemen, gravel Pit, graham parker, juliana hatfield). the ep is a cool mix of big star and kinks like poppiness and wilco and the jayhawks inspired rootsy jingle jangle. check em out!

my path to the lemonheads all started with juliana hatfield, who i thought, at the time, was the most gorgeous creature mine eyes had ever happened upon. she’s still strikingly beautiful, that goes without saying, but my school boy dreams have since waned. i was a huge blake babies fan and when i read that she was going to be working with some guy, and purported boyfriend, evan dando, i was on board with whatever she was putting her name on. what became of this union was the lemonheads classic 92 release, its a shame about ray. by the end of my third listen i was like juliana, who? my only problem with its a shame about ray is that its too damn short, coming in under a half an hour. i suppose thats part of its charm and dando is a master of the 3 minute get in and get out pop song. so, really what am i bitchin bout? in my book, ray ranks in the top 5 records of the nineties, and is definitely in my top 20 of all times. it’s just a wonderful pop record about a boy, chicks, drugs, hopes and dreams.

i have been lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of the recently re-released rhino records collectors edition of its a shame about ray an am going to give it away to one lucky person. here’s a wee bit about the collection…

The 10 bonus tracks feature “Shaky Ground,” which was originally released as the B-side to “My Drug Buddy.” The remaining nine songs are unreleased demos that Dando recorded in 1991, including early renditions of album tracks “Confetti,” “Rockin Stroll” and “Hannah & Gabi,” plus “Bit Part,” which includes vocals from Hatfield.

The DVD contains 45 minutes of videos and live performances that were previously released only on VHS as Two Weeks In Australia. The disc features videos for several songs from IT’S A SHAME ABOUT RAY, including the title track, the breakout single “Mrs. Robinson,” “My Drug Buddy” and more. Also included is a video for “Being Around,” a song that would appear a year later on the follow-up to RAY and “Half The Time” from the Lemonheads’ Atlantic debut, Lovey. A trio of live performances include “Alison’s Starting To Happen,” “Ride With Me” from Lovey and “It’s About Time” from 1993’s Come On Feel The Lemonheads. The DVD also features candid commentary by Dando recalling the band’s wild Australian antics.

all you gotta to do to win is leave a comment, i was going to make up some elaborate challenge, but got lazy.

i love offering shows that i actually attended. today’s the lemonheads playing at the taste of chicago on the 4th of july in 92. its the xrt radio broadcast.

wanted to make mention that the everybodyfields are coming to the earl on friday, 3.14, but they are on an extensive tour as i type. check their myspace page for a list of dates - they play tomorrow evening in centralia, wa @ olympic club hotel. if you havent check out their latest, and my favorite of 07, nothing is okay, i cant recommend it enough. it is one of the most achingly gorgeous records i have heard in at least 10 years. vocally, i havent come across a pair like jill and sam since jay farrar and kelly willis’ take on townes’ “rex blues” - see video as evidence. the production is definitely not your standard folk/countryish fare. its actually very reminiscent of some of daniel lanois’ work which is to say its fuckin awesome. anywho, check em out.

captains dead’s top 13 records of the ‘07

i listened to a lot of records this year, probably too many for my own damn good. i tend to obsess over records over extended periods of time. this personality defect doesn’t really lend itself well to giving other, obsessive worthy records the ability to firmly plant themselves into my brain. so, here are my 13 favorite, see most obsessed over, records of 2007.
