where you come from, yonder mountain string band?

if you havent noticed, captains dead is now in bed with mog. honestly, i really never bothered visiting mog up until a couple of weeks ago, cause quite frankly i get my social networking fill through this dump. but after meandering around mog i have found it to be pretty cool. there’s a few things i would change, but its not my bat and ball. anyway, they have a great video interview with craig finn up right now, along with some other artists.

i dont know how the yonder mountain string band’s recently released mountain tracks 5 wound up on the ol ipod but i am really not one to ask questions. i guess ill never know. although, i do chalk all missing moments in my life up to beer. so, there in probably lies the answer. regardless, i am really diggin these guys especially their musicianship. i am a sucker for banjo and mandolin, both of which is the makeup for any self respecting bluegrass band. therefor if ya like the bluegrass i would only assume these lads would do it for ya. anyone got any other bluegrass bands they dig? i am not well versed in the genre, sadly.

sometimes she partied with townies

hola, friends. whats goin on? me? you ask? fuckin nothin, at all. just enjoying a sweet water 420 and watching the comedic genius of ryan reynolds in just friends. am i the only one that, for no real reason, finds themself really liking mr reynolds? there is something oddly likable about em, even though he looks like your typical joey douchebag.

dont know much about this dude, cory chisel, but i do know i am lovin this track from cabin ghosts ep. kinda reminds me of a 00’s version of the much under appreciated chicago troubadour, michael mcdermott. which is also like comparing him to springsteen circa greetings… definitely look forward to hearing a full length from him.

j roddy & the business are opening for the hold steady on their upcoming tour. they kind of remind me of the boys of philly, marah, but much drunker and more willing to whip your ass. i dig em, but i am only judging my appreciation off of these two tracks. chiggity check em out!

captain’s dead guide to records for the summer of 08, part one

i dont know where you live, but down here summer sure as hell seems to have sprung. that means the hyundai’s windows are coming down with even greater frequency even when its 90 plus degrees, but even sometimes i puss out and put that air on. i cant deal with africa hot. in any event, here is round one of two of my top 20 summer records for the ‘08.

the avalanches.since i left you

i dont know much about dj records, but i do know that since i left you is one chill and inspiring piece of work. its a patchwork of cool. if ya havent heard it, you are sorely missing out.

if i were to make a movie of the debauchery that summer brings including but not limited to: random hookups, drunken brawls, driving your car off a cliff, spur of the moment road trips, going out in a blaze of glory, etc, r.i.p. would be the soundtrack.

the smoking popes.destination failure

who doesnt love poppy/punky songs about girls, self doubt and even more songs about girls? my favorite line comes from the opener “star struck one” which pretty much sets the tone for the whole record, “my heart tapped me on the shoulder and whispered in my ear “dont be a pussy all your life.” if it weren’t so fuckin catchy the shit would be depressing.

i cant think of a better way to spend 5 bucks this summer. fuck that gallon of gas and/or 3 pbrs! you like the mats? husker du? jack logan? anthemic rock via some dudes garage in rhode island? huh? this will do for the lonely drinkers what the meadowlands did for disillusioned 30 somethings.

sup, fools? got my mother fuckin stimulus check yesterday! hellz yeah!! i held it in my hand for all of 30 minutes and off to the bank it went, never to be seen or heard from again. i got these things called action bills i need to pay. fuckin white man’s got their foot on my neck.

any of you tards seein waits in knoxville? i know i sure the fuck am and it just so happens to someone’s birthday. so beers on you, bitches!

firstly, speaking of tom, that scarjo record is a fucking disgrace. she has no business trying to pull this kind of shit off. an entire record of waits songs?! she’s got some nuts, but i will give her credit for going big. with that said, i dont know whose face she got those luscious tits of hers next to but that dude better have gotten a real good peek/feel to green light this shit. i even tried creating a creepy johansson mosaic to look at whilst listening in an effort to “enhance” the experience, but all it did was put me to sleep shortly there after.

secondly, you guys hear the new hold steady song “sequestered in memphis?’ while i really dig it, i am beginning to feel that mr finn is beginning to lean a little to heavy on, well, shit/situations being “heavy” and people/ne-er-do-wells being “scared.” just saying is all.. you can stream it on their myspace page or get it from itunes.

this richard buckner interview, from a few months ago, depressed the hell out of me, not only because i hate hearing that things are “drying up for him” but the inevitablity that this will sooner or later start affecting more artists like him. apparently merge doesnt want to put out anything until ‘09 and no one wants to book him until a new record comes out. all of which makes little to no sense. even if merge didnt want to release a physical copy of the record have they not learned that a digital only release may be a viable option?  unfortunately, artists like richard only have so much of a shelf life in between records and two years in between them is a killer now a days. how long can artists like richard go on making a decent livin playing places like schubas, the earl, etc their entire career? at some point they have to outgrow those smaller places or they’re left in richards current situation. sad state of affairs for some of our most gifted artists. maybe i should start my own digital only label and start releasing stuff. i just may…

matthew loiacono is a member of the upstate new york band, the kamikaze hearts. for those that dont know, the kamikaze hearts’ oneida road was my favorite record of the 06 and in my book has since achieved the minor classic plateau. then it would be safe to assume that a man who was partly responsible for creating such a piece of work would be able to achieve a similar end result, correct? sure, why not? but its really not fair. so, i will say this, his soon to be released kentucky is a fantastic voyage into world of fractured folk centered mostly around the mandolin, banjo and sometimes only accompanied by nothing more than a stomping foot. matthew works the banjo and mandolin in ways that this guy who doesnt play either would have never thought possible. it was recorded in a basement in upstate new york in february, i can only assume it was hella cold but only adds to the atmosphere he’s created. think califone fronted by a less effected, or is it affected?, tim kinsella. kentucky is due out on 6.3 via collar city records and/or your point your local browser to itunes, amazon, etc.

two bands/records that i am still on the fence about are the terrordactyls and their self titled debut and no age’s nouns. nouns on one hand harkens me back to the lower-fi glory days of early superchunk, label mates mudhoney and present day constantines, which is all fine and awesome but there’s something about the finished product that i find both refreshing and mildly annoying. maybe they’re suckin the teet a little too much? i dont know? the terrordactyls are supposedly part of the whole anti-folk movement, which i dig, but they may be a little too cute. the songs are charming, for sure, but i think they are too fey for my liking. i still may come around, though.

i never got into portishead their first time around, and honestly i still really haven’t, but i do really dig this performance - its a soundboard from back in 95 and its actually two separate performances - they are tagged accordingly. i have the new one sitting on my external hard drive, but havent loaded it on the ipod as of yet. is it worth checking out?

go ahead, cornelius. you can cry.

i now remember why i stopped watching basketball. i cant handle the massive double dick sucking by the commentators. case in point, i am currently watching my bull vs the heat and the heat are on a bit of a run. nothing too serious but the bull has definitely looked better during this series. anyway, the two cock suckers are currently handing over the series to the heat cause they have played 5 good minutes, but they are only up by 3. you really have to be listening or i guess watching to understand my frustration. it all comes down to the fact that i fucking hate bill walton even though he has nothing to do with any of this. i just clump all basketball commentators into the walton shit dump. go bull!

any who, the polyphonic spree has got a new record, the fragile army, coming out on june 19. they have an e-card and 8 minute mashup of the record available for download by clicking right here.

so i have this hold steady performance but i have no idea where or when it was recorded. the only thing my folder says is “fingerprints” and craig thanks “fingerprints” during the opener. it sounds like and in store or radio recording.

as it turns out that that the hold steady “fingerprints” mystery has been solved. it was recorded and is being sold exclusively at fingerprint music in the lovely city of long beach, ca. you can purchase it for a measly 4.98 by clicking here. my sincerest apologies to rand, the owner of fingerprints.

they called him porky pig

i never get to catch conan, sadly. either i am watching a cops marathon or i am working but either way i never watch conan or really any other late night gab fest. the other night sure would have been cool to watch cause conan had of montreal as the featured musical guest and youaintnopicasso has their tripped out performance up for your viewing pleasure. i have never seen an of montreal show, although i have a bunch of recorded stuff. for those that have seen them, are they pretty good? are they worth checking out?

so i am on another huge hold steady/lftr pllr kick the past few days - it happens every month or so. i know its that i try to live my life vicariously through mr finn’s tales of self destruction and my longing to relive those days that i find some kind of kinship with. unfortunately, my days of recklessness now involves a few beers on the back porch and an overdose of toy story 2 and/or diego and dora the explorer.

anyway, here is everyone’s favorite brooklynites by way of the fabulous city of minneapolis, the hold steady performing at last years lollapalooza. its a great recording, btw.
