some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends

i dont know much about the tallest on earth but he plays a mean banjo and has a wonderful twangy lilt. its all very confusing cause his myspace page claims that hails from sweeden, but sounds as if he’s from the backwoods of some forsaken land or at very least brooklyn. regardless of where the hell he’s from, he runs through the folk music playbook like he’s shacked up with woody guthrie a time or two. if you dig dylan, william elliot whitmore, american history of folk music, etc then the tallest man on earth will treat you nicely.

his debut long player, shallow graves, is maybe out now and can be purchased through his myspace page, again i think.

i wont be found check out his myspace page for a bunch of streaming tracks.

it will follow the rain

btw, was there really a need for a bachelor party 2? shit, the first one came out in what the early 80’s? why the hell would the soil the good name of bachelor party with a flick that features mr o-face? apparently the american pie franchise wanted too much for licensing and/or eugene levy wasnt available.

i love you more than my after-show monster bong hit…

sup peoples? after listening to jens for the past few days, i have finally come to a realization on who he sounds like. barry manilow! or atleast a “i write the songs,” and “mandy” era manilow. this is no apparent than on “a postcard to nina” where the horns come in. am i the only one that hears this? it may be my massive exposure to manilow as a child kicking in.

for those interested, i reposted a cool grant lee buffalo show from germany over here.

this real life simpsons house is super freakin creepy. it has “bad things go on in here” written all over it.

im always amazed at the shit that passes under my radar. the latest, in a depressingly long list, is william eilliot whitmore and jenny hoysten’s collaboration, the hallways of always. yeah, it came out in november of 06. they got a cool cash/carter vibe goin on a few of the tracks, and is a nice departure from whitmore’s usual type of stuff. check it!

i am kinda diggin this track by the choir practice. they are fronted by coco culbertson who in her past was part of the gay, the ac newman band and briefly in the tennessee twin. as their name implies they really bring the choir, but not in a polyphonic kinda way. more subdued and not all up in your face with it.

top o’ the afternoon people. man its beautiful here in atlanta today. the one thing i will never get used to though is that the wind is quite cool but that damn sun is, well, freakin hot.

if i were you, i would not miss william elliot whitmore tonight at smiths olde bar. i, unfortunately, have to miss him cause i am working but you really have no excuse except maybe pure laziness. i have not seem him yet, but from all reports, he is supposedly pretty amazing.

i posted a show from iowa about a year ago if you want to check it out. here

i like polyphonic spree, but sometimes they are just a little too much. now los angeles’ bodies of water, on the other hand, bring their take of the bombastic gospel sound with a more rustic/old timey feel. i have to spend a bit more time with their ears will pop, eyes will blink but thus far its pretty damn cool. check em…

part of the problem with working at night is that i dont want to listen to anything to poppy cause it’s kinda annoying at 3 am, but i dont want to listen to anything too solemn due to the fact that i dont want to fall asleep. so, i usually find myself listening to either mogwai or explosions in the sky most of the time. both perfect soundtracks for the late night set.

william elliott whitmore 9.1.06 live in iowa city

there is no singer today that can put you in another place and time better than william elliott whitmore. listening to william is to put yourself in a smokey off a dark alley club somewhere in the heart of mississippi during the depression. he is blessed with a voice that is part modern day tom waits and as alluded to above part depression era bluesman. in my opinion, he is one of the most important up and coming american artists.

here is a recent show, 9.1.06, from the picador in iowa city, ia. thanks to the original taper!
