this is cracker soul

afternoon/evening, tards! anyone got any plans worth mentioning for the weeks end? we were going to head out to columbia, to check it out, but while i have been told by two people i got the gig, i still dont have anything in writing. so, until i hear officially that we will be moving i dont even want to bother, especially when driving 300 miles, one way, is involved. although, we have been eyeing this house as it has popped up on craigslist a few times. dont know if we can deal with two bedrooms though. so, hopefully we will hear something next week, hopefully.

one band that i for some reason or another have fallen out of touch with is cracker. i cant even tell ya what they released after 98’s gentleman’s blues. regardless, i still have an affinity for the catalogue i do own. for those that follow em, hows their recent catalogue? if you happen to be in the area of pioneertown, ca, or are just looking for a road trip, check out the details for the 4th annual cracker/camper van beethoven campout, which looks pretty awesome.

here they be playing at ziggys in winston-salem, nc on 2.3.94.

I can recommend Forever, which is the album that came after Gentleman’s Blues, and also their latest one, Greenland, which has Something You Ain’t Got, another classic addition to the Cracker canon of great tunes….and the rest of the album ain’t shabby. The couple of albums that fall in between….well, they didn’t float my boat, but perhaps someone else will pipe up about them.

Although, now that I say that…seems like there were a few good ‘uns on Countrysides….including Ain’t Gonna Suck Itself, their “love letter” to Virgin Records.

thanks, matt and by title alone i know i need to hear “aint gonna suck itself.” i’ll definitely check out greenland and something… this is a time when i wish apple offered up a subscription based offering for the ipod so i can check this stuff out before purchasing…

As a longtime Columbia fan of the site allow me to be the first to welcome you! Where are you going to be working?

thanks dan. i am going to be working at ft. jackson as i am a military contractor. not by choice so much but by greed really. we have never been there so i am hoping we are making a good choice. everything i hear is mostly positive so thats encouraging. i dont know if you happened to check out that house we are looking at but if you did, do you know that area and/or is it ok? thanks again.

I can totally recommend Ain’t Gonna Suck Itself - the title sells the whole song, which is stuff from Lowery at its finest. There’s some other good stuff on that album. I think “Duty Free” is on there as well.

“Greenland” is a worthy purchase, and a proper Cracker album, after the couple of more experimental albums that came before it.

Thanks to Imeem, here’s a listen of Ain’t Gonna..

I tried to link Ain’t Gonna from Imeem, but I’m not sure what happened to that (and the rest of my comment.) So if my previous comment isn’t waiting for approval by you, just check out Imeem, and you’ll find it.

Here is Something You Ain’t Got, Duty-Free, (as well as the rest of the concert set) from an FM broadcast.

You really need to hear the studio version of “Something” to appreciate it fully, but I think you’ll get the gist of it..
