I read an interview where he said one year at SXSW he decided to shoot a mockumentary just to entertain himself. Anyway, people saw the film, word got around, and less than two years later he was on SNL. He said the SNL gig was better because he didn't have to drive cross-country in a van full of instruments anymore...
